Northwestern transfer Andrew Leota commits to Auburn

The first public commitment of the Bryan Harsin era at Auburn is on the board. And it's a significant one.

Northwestern transfer Andrew Leota, a defensive end, has given his verbal to the Tigers.

In 18 games over three seasons with the Wildcats, the former 3-star recruited recored 25 tackles, 10 TFL, 6.5 sacks. In 2020, he had 23 tackles and 4 sacks. At last check, he was listed at 6-feet-4, 250 pounds.

Leota entered the transfer portal about a month ago. He should have three years of eligibility remaining at Auburn.

Leota plans to arrive at Auburn in June -- after he graduates from Northwestern. He will be eligible to play in 2021.

For Auburn, which can use help on the edge, this is an important pledge.

Leota, who also goes by the first name "Eku," is from Asheville (N.C.), and was a 3-star recruit coming out of high school in the 2018 class. As a recruit, he was the No. 36 weak-side end nationally in the industry generated 247Sports Composite.

Here are some notables per the Northwestern football website:

2020: Recorded one tackle for loss against Maryland (10/24)...Tied for a then career-high in sacks (1) at Iowa (10/31)...Made one tackle vs. Nebraska (11/7)...Forced second career fumble and a career-high 2.0 sacks at Purdue (11/14)...Became first Wildcat to register 2.0 or more sacks and a forced fumble in the same game since Ifeadi Odenigbo did so on Oct. 15, 2016 at Michigan State...Registered another sack against Wisconsin (11/21)...Recorded three total tackles for the third consecutive game against Michigan State (11/28)...Made first start of season vs. Illinois (12/12).

2019: Appeared in 10 games last season ... Finished the season with 2.5 sacks including full sacks against Purdue (11/9) and Illinois (11/30) ... Forced a fumble against Purdue (11/9) ... Posted a career-best three tackles in the contest vs. Ohio State (10/18) ... Recorded half a sack in his first career game as a Wildcat against Stanford on Aug. 31.

2018: Did not appear in any games in his true first-year season.

Can play this year and 3 years left! Must be smart to graduate in 2 years (actually 3 years being a redshirt sophomore) + Covid year.

Nice pick up. If nothing else it balances out Big Kat possibly leaving still. Like what I've read about him.

In classic Harsin style- comes out of nowhere

Not out of nowhere. AU had been working on him since the new staff arrived. Just was VIP info & until today the info had been that AU was interested.

It's an upgrade. EKu fits our new D scheme better than BK does.

Huge to get a guy with immediate eligibility AND three years to play.  I'd love to land other grad transfers with at least 2 years thanks to the COVID clause.
