Allen Flanigan returning to Auburn for junior season

Auburn is getting a huge piece back for its 2021-22 season.

Rising junior guard Allen Flaniganannounced on social media Tuesday morning that is returning for another year with the program and will not be testing the NBA draft waters.

"As many of you know, playing in the NBA has always been my lifelong dream, but I also have other goals and dreams like becoming an All-SEC player or award finalist, and leading this team to something special like an SEC Championship or NCAA tournament," Flanigan said. "With that being said I will no longer be focusing on the 2021 NBA Draft. I'm coming back. The journey continues. Let's be great!"

The son of former Auburn point guard and current assistant coach Wes Flanigan, Allen took a huge leap last season from his freshman to sophomore year. He went from a 3.2-points-per-game defensive specialist to one of Auburn's most consistent scorers and overall players, at 14.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 0.9 steals.

Auburn had a handful of departures this offseason, including point guard Sharife Cooper to the NBA and shooting guard Justin Powell transferring to Tennessee, but Bruce Pearl is set to reload nicely with Flanigan, former five-star center and UNC transfer Walker Kessler, Eastern Kentucky point guard transfer Wendell Green Jr., and College of Charleston combo guard transfer Zep Jasper.

Definitely gone after next season, so I feel like we're gonna get everything (as we typically do) out of the guy. So important to have at least one of the leading ball handlers back

I think he’s the team leader as well.

Woohoo!! Great to hear about guys actually coming back that have a chance to leave. We need that in our team culture. Not hating on people that leave but we need some folks that want to accomplish goals at AU.

And Flan coming back is huge news for next years team. He will be a team leader that we so desperately need. War Eagle Flan now lets do this!!

This was expected, but it's still exciting. That's a bad boy. I can't wait to see him freed up from primary ballhandling duty and back to pressing the ball on defense. He may be our leading scorer again, but personally, I'm even more excited to see him with the energy to dominate on the defensive end.

Possibly, but that’s a role that I’d contend he shares with Stretch as well (off the court at least), from what we were reading last season

Stretch did win the biggest Auspy Award so he’s pretty awesome dude evidently.

Didn’t even know that. He just seemed like your quintessential mouth of the team. I don’t think Pearl could push that guy out without major pushback, thinking about it now.

We are very fortunate to have allen coming back. Makes me very happy

This might be the best team ever for Auburn, on paper at least.

It will be on paper just hope they can learn/play together but having Allen will just add so much experience plus the other guys from last year who stay.

This is HUGE. The guy who never backed down in ANY game. The guy that can go get his own buckets even when he didn't have a PG to set him up. The guy who had the biggest jump from freshman to sophomore. The best perimeter defender decided to come back.

And what nobody really talks about a guy who wasn't rated high. Powell was rated higher than him coming out and that seems to be a big draw to many on here.

This is very big news.

I hope he can get everyone to improve this coming season as he did this past....probably spent the whole off-season working on his shooting, from the field and free throws....a great trait for an athlete....

This is huge Flanagan is both a great player and a a team leader.  Flanagan along with players like Williams Moore, Cambridge Cardwell will give us players who have been in the Pearl system for their 2nd or 3rd year along with experienced transfers and two very good incoming freshman. We will have a great mixture of talent, experience and more importantly talented depth at every position.

Last year I was a mixture of optimistic and scared because I saw the talent but also saw how young we were then Cooper being held out by NCAA then Powell hurt then Cooper hurt and we all saw the results but we also saw some players like Flanagan, Williams, Thor show how good they were and also saw potential in Cardwell, Moore, and Cambridge.   This year I am optimistic with minimal fear.  Still have new players and need to build team chemistry but the returning players and the experienced players being added makes me think it will be a fun year.

Okay, this is really nitpicky, I realize, but the man's name is Flanigan, not Flanagan. I cringe every time I see it misspelled. Maybe that's autocorrect screwing with you, I dunno, but it's like nails on a chalkboard.
