Bars We've Been In

Recommended Posts

Two of my favorites:

The Bell in Hand Tavern (Boston) -oldest bar in the country.  Been renovated a lot, but still cool.  Just down the street from where the Boston Massacre happened.

McSorley's Old Ale House (NYC) - oldest bar in the city.  So much history in the place.  Only serves light or dark beer and only takes cash.  There are wishbones hanging above the bar that were lefr by WW1 soldiers.  If the wishbones are still there, they never returned.  Also has an original paper from the day the Titanic sank.

Sous La Terre in the Gump. Open from midnight until. Music started at 2:00 am. The band took requests but only from ladies, and she had to sit at Henry Pugh's- RIP- piano while he serenaded her. The rest of the band just depended on who showed up  The drinks were *incredibly* strong. Walked out in daylight more than once. Very much a black bar where they treated our punk asses like family. Special, special place.

God I spent so many drunken nights there.

Been missing bars lately and reminiscing about the good ones.

Liar's Saloon in Montauk. I wish I had pics but that was 20 years ago. It's on the docks and where fishermen go to drink after work. No food and no tourists. Cheap beer and exquisite cursing. Pro tip: Don't wear linen pants thinking your Wall Street friend is taking you to some yacht club in the Hamptons. Some guy named Rocco might tell you that you look like an a**hole. Pro tip 2: Do play drinking games with strangers at the picnic tables outside.

If anyone saw The Affair on Showtime, it was filmed in Montauk. The vibe was pretty accurate.
