The first swimmer to go from unranked (not even an honorable mention, in fact) into the top 20, Bethel joined the class’s elite by dropping a 1:45.54 200 IM in February, having been 1:47-flat as a junior. Bethel also took a huge leap forward in the 100 breast, going from 54.0 to 52.9, and his 200 saw a massive eight-second drop at one meet last December: 2:04.8 to 1:56.7. The 200 free is very much the same story; he entered his senior year having never broken 1:40, and managed to dip down to 1:37.2. While he may not have the high-end range in the sprints that many of his counterparts do in this class, his rapid improvement last season brings him up into these rankings. A swimmer riding the momentum of recent improvement entering their freshman year, versus one that’s been stagnant, can be a huge trajectory indicator in a collegiate career. Bethel is on the right side of it.

Rathle, who will be joining Bethel at Auburn, experienced success similar to his future Tiger teammate as a high school senior. An honorable mention in last season’s rankings, Rathle knocked more than four seconds off his 400 IM in 3:45.9, putting him within two seconds of class leader Matt Fallon, and also developed his 200 IM (1:48.0 to 1:46.4) and 100 breast (55.7 to 54.4) impressively. But it was the 200 free that really stands out for Rathle, who went from it being an afterthought in his repertoire (1:38.7 as a junior) to joining the class’s best with a 1:35.65 in March. That performance came on a relay lead-off, which is fitting because he likely won’t swim the event individually at SECs or NCAAs, given its proximity to the 400 IM. A byproduct of that 400 IM/200 free success was his 500 free, which improved by almost five seconds in 4:23.3. Rathle’s improvement curve, not unlike Bethel’s, says good things are coming for Auburn in future seasons.

19. Nate Stoffle (Previous Rank: #19) – Spartan Aquatic Club – Brockwood High School – Lilburn, GA **Committed to Auburn**
Best Times: 100 back – 46.63, 200 back – 1:43.51, 50 free – 20.06, 100 free – 45.15, 100 fly – 48.37

Stoffle further cemented his status as one of the best backstrokers in the class as a senior, dropping a 1:43.51 200 back in late March. The Auburn commit also dropped his 100 back down a half-second in 46.6, and made strides in some of his off-events, including dropping his 50 free seven-tenths for a very respectable 20.06. Stoffle’s individual success this past season was bolstered by a strong group of teammates at Spartans Aquatic Club, where he helped them break a pair of National Age Group relay records—which included him splitting 19.5 on the 200 free relay. While Auburn only had a few swimmers compete at NCAAs last season, their incoming class is strong, and Stoffle will be a big part of the team from the jump, and will likely slot in as the Tigers’ top backstroke option as a freshman. He’ll also be joining his brother, Aidan, a rising junior at Auburn.

Florida Gators recruiting is somewhat regressing, still solid but not outstanding.

UGA is currently recruiting half of South Africa's national team (both Men and Women). They already have secured a commitment from Matt Sates (next Michael Phelps).

NC State with some top recruiting classes (esp. Men's Swimming). I think they could win a few national championships in the coming years.

Despite being released from her National Letter of Intent (NLI) in the spring, Lexie Mulvihill will remain at Auburn University and begin her collegiate career there for the 2021-22 NCAA season.

Mulvihill, who was Auburn’s first verbal commitment from the high school class of 2021 back in September 2019, was released from her NLI in late April, along with fellow recruit Abby McCulloh, after it was learned that Gary Taylor would be leaving the program after three years as head coach.

Just a few days after Taylor’s departure was reported, the Tigers announced that Ryan Wochomurka would be taking over the program as head coach after six seasons at the University of Houston.

On keeping Mulvihill in the fold, Wochomurka told SwimSwam: “We are excited to welcome Lexie to our Auburn Swimming & Diving Family with our other incoming freshmen.”

Mulvihill joins a solid freshman class for the Tigers that includes our 14th-ranked recruit Rebekah Hamilton and #19 Ellie Waldrep.

Waldrep is a promising talent that followed up a stagnant junior year by making a big splash as a senior. Waldrep was 52.4 in the 100 back in 2018-19, and then after essentially matching her PB last season, dropped a sizzling 51.75 this past February and then tied that clocking in April. 50-yard stroke times are generally overlooked in college swimming since they aren’t raced individually, but Waldrep’s 50 back best of 24.14 would’ve been mid-pack in the 200 medley relay at the 2021 NCAAs, something that should give a big boost to an Auburn team that failed to field any NCAA relays last season. And given that sprinting ability, Waldrep’s progression in the 200 back is even more impressive, as the Baylor swimmer sliced three seconds off her best last season in 1:53.72, a time that easily makes the championship final at SECs and would’ve been just .05 outside of scoring positions at NCAAs last season. Waldrep also has a solid 53-mid 100 fly, and dropped two seconds in the 200 IM last season, so there are options for a third event. A 23.0 flat-start 50 free will also provide the Tigers with some relay depth that was lacking last season.

Mulvihill’s elite sprinting ability continued to evolve in her senior year, dropping two tenths in the 50 free to rank her among the class’s top five and put her new best of 22.22 dead on what it took to earn a second NCAA swim last season. Mulvihill showed some consistency with four swims 22.7 or better last season, brought her 100 down a few tenths in 49.3, and took big leaps in butterfly. From a 54.6/2:02.3 flyer to 53.1/1:57.9, Mulvihill is all of a sudden right on the cusp of NCAA invite times in both events, and instantly becomes a viable option to swim fly on any given medley relay for the Tigers, not just freestyle. She also dropped more than a second in the 200 free, showing improvement across the board which was a rarity last season.

Auburn's 2021 recruiting class ranks #1 (#2) in the SEC and #9 in the nation. (They could still rank Alabama in the top 8 EDIT Alabama is ranked at #5 overall now due to adding some International swimmers, not sure they should be ranked that high though EDIT According to some insiders, these swimmers will not attend Alabama. So Alabama should definitely be ranked lower). Technically, UGA should be #1 in the SEC but South African teen-sensation and #1 rk swimmer Matt Sates is not included in this class (he will probably join UGA next year).

The Tigers bring in three swimmers that ranked in the top 20 of our re-rank this year, and they’ve picked up a total of four high-end recruits from the neighboring state of Georgia. The additions give new head coach Ryan Wochomurka a nice boost entering his first campaign.

#14 Henry Bethel and #15 Jacques Rathle jumped up to those positions after being left out of the top 20 as juniors, both coming off phenomenal seasons with similar event specialites.

Bethel, the top-ranked swimmer out of the non-ranked from last year, dropped 1.5 seconds down to 1:45.54 in the 200 IM, and also hit massive best times to get down to 52.9/1:56.7 on breaststroke. All three of those put him in the vicinity of SEC ‘A’ finals (all events Auburn didn’t have any top-eight finishers in last season), and he’s also got a solid 1:37.2 200 freestyle and 1:48.5 200 back in his arsenal.

Rathle, a Thibodaux, Louisiana native, is also a high-end medley swimmer, having progressed down to 3:45.90 in the 400 as a senior, putting him within two seconds of the class’s best. He also has a 1:46.4 200 IM, plus 54.4/1:58.6 breaststrokes and 1:35.6/4:23 freestyles. Both free events in particular improved by a landslide last season, projecting him to be a valuable 800 free relay contributor in future seasons, if not right away.

The third Auburn recruit ranked in the top 20, and the only one of the three that was also featured there as a high school junior, is Spartan Aquatic Club sprinter Nate Stoffle.

Stoffle, who will be joining older brother Aidan with the Tigers, immediately becomes the team’s best 100 backstroker with his PB of 46.63, and he’s right at the top of the squad with his 1:43.51 200. Similar to his club teammate Peter Sacca, Stoffle is a clutch relay performer, including having split 19.5 on a 200 free relay, with his flat-start best sitting at 20.0.

Once a revered sprinting school, Stoffle will be relied upon to contribute right away to Auburn’s 200 free relay, with their top 50 swimmer from last season, Nik Eberly, transferring to Michigan.

But outside of the top three, the other swimmers Auburn managed to pick up are also very strong.

Grant Davis has a quality 500 free at 4:23.7, with a ton of potential to improve in the 200 (1:37.9) and 1650 (15:30) free. Mason Mathias brings a similar skill set with bests of 1:36.5/4:25/15:20 in the freestyles, and the duo will form a competitive distance training group with rising sophomores Mikkel Gadgaard and Michael Bonson.

Not to be overlooked, Andrew Simmons (48.7/1:45.1) and Fletcher Hayes (49.4/1:46.6) add to the backstroke depth of the team.

Auburn brings in a talent-laden class led by Baylor Swim Club’s Ellie Waldrep, who rose to #8 this season in our class of 2021 re-rank after a monster season.

Waldrep, who stagnated in her progression as a high school junior, dropped 51.7/1:53.7 backstrokes last year, slicing three-quarters of a second off her previous PB in the 100 and three seconds in the 200 to make her a potential NCAA ‘A’ finalist in the 100 and a top-16 swimmer in the 200.

Waldrep also has a 53.6 100 fly, 1:58.7 200 IM and 23.0 50 free, and her 24.1 best time in the 50 back will give the Tigers a top-tier 200 medley relay lead-off over the course of her career (that time is already good enough to be mid-pack at NCAAs).

Joining Waldrep in the class are high-end freestyle sprinters Lexie Mulvihill, Rebekah Hamilton and graduate transfer Mykenzie Leehy. After having no entrants in the 50 free at the 2021 NCAAs, with Anna-Julia Kutsch quitting mid-season, the Tigers project to have at least three this year.

Mulvihill boasts lifetime bests of 22.22 and 49.35, with her 50 exactly on the time required to score at NCAAs last season. Her 100 is only about six-tenths off, and both are faster than anyone on Auburn’s roster went last season. The Florida native showed great improvement last season in the 100 fly as well, clocking 53.16 to put her within a half-second of an NCAA invite.

Hamilton brings a similar skill set, as the local Alabama native has 22.5/48.9 free best times to make her a potential NCAA scorer and surefire relay contributor. With 53.8 best times in both the 100 fly and 100 back, Hamilton will be able to pick and choose which one she wants to zero in on in college.

Leehy, who comes over for one season from Houston, will really enhance the sprint free presence this season with bests of 22.4/48.5,  but her 200 free is her best event, with a 1:44.90 PB that’s only six-tenths outside of qualifying for an NCAA ‘A’ final based on last season’s results.

Along with Mulvihill, Waldrep and Hamilton, the Tigers have yet another 53-second flyer coming in the form of Avery Bargeron, who owns a 53.29 100 fly that will score in the top 16 at SECs, but her 200 fly is less than half-a-second off an NCAA invite (1:57.89).

The small but mighty class is enhanced by 1:49 freestyler Lucy O’Neill and 55.8/1:59 backstroker Jenna Smith.

Tigers split season's first dual meet at Florida State

The Auburn women, ranked No. 23, knocked off the Seminoles for the second year in a row with a 177-123 victory while the men dropped a hard-fought contest, 153-147, to No. 15 Florida State – an improvement from last year's result.

Auburn will make their home debut next Friday when the Tigers welcome Kentucky and North Carolina State to the James E. Martin Aquatics Center for a double dual meet.

Brookwood grad Nate Stoffle, a freshman at Auburn, were among the 79 athletes named Monday to the 2021-22 USA Swimming Junior National Team. Stoffle, who trains with Spartan Aquatic Club, made the team in the 100-meter backstroke with his team of 55.21, also recorded at the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials. Stoffle was the Daily Post’s Boys Swimmer of the Year last season as a senior.

AUBURN, Ala. – Twelve incoming swimmers and divers signed their National Letters of Intent to join the Auburn S&D program as a part of the 2022 class, head coach Ryan Wochomurka announced Monday. 

It's the first recruiting class to sign with Wochomurka and his staff. 

"We are excited to welcome this incredibly talented group of student-athletes to the Auburn Swimming & Diving Family," said Wochomurka, Auburn's first-year head coach. "We look forward to providing them with the quintessential Auburn experience and helping them to develop into world class students, athletes, and people."

The class is made up of 11 swimmers and one diver. It's a group that spans from coast to coast with eight different states represented in all – Alabama, California, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Texas. It's also a group that features versatility in the pool with different swimmers specializing in different strokes. 

The lone transfer in the class, Daisy Platts, is a graduate transfer from Bowling Green. A native of the United Kingdom, Platts is a three-time MAC champion in the 200 backstroke and holds the school record in both the 100 and 200 backstroke. 

Among the other swimmers to sign, four (Casey Cullen, Morgan Gore, Ainsley Jones and Kyla Maloney) competed at Wave I of the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in June. 

Kyleigh Kidd, of Southlake, Texas, is the only diver to sign. Kidd finished second on the women's 3-meter at the 2021 USA Diving Open Championship in August.

I don't think this class ranks as high as Gary Taylor's 2021 class (I don't even think its close). Taylor actually recruited a nationally Top10 class (Men and Women). He even landed two Junior Team USA swimmers (however, due to the coaching change we lost one of the top signees to UGA via LOI release). Covid maybe played a role and some of the kids wanted to stay closer to home at that time. Swimming is a bit different, kids sometimes suddenly explode within a season and this is what happened here. Some of the 2021 recruits were initially ranked in the 30s, 40s, and 50s nationally and then exploded and ended up being ranked in the 20s and even Top10, nationally. Taylor did a great job here in evaluating talent.

Maybe some of the 2022 signees will similarly explode in the coming months.

Unfortunately, currently there is not much talent in our region.

However, we "lost" a nationally top ranked recruit to Virgina (Sebastian Sergile, #1 GA, #11 USA, Swim Atlanta, Alpharetta, GA).

There is a highly ranked 2024 recruit we really need to land: Levenia Smith, (#1 AL, #6 USA, TNT Swimming, Spanish Fort, AL)

Tigers close out GT Fall Invite with another solid day

The Auburn men, ranked No. 20 coming in, finished second at the meet ahead of Florida State, Georgia Tech and Georgia. With 1154.5 points, they trailed only Florida (1557). 

On the women's side, the 15th-ranked Tigers took third place with 1054 points. Georgia scored 1254 points to win while Florida was second with 1215 points.

- Australian Lewis Tregidden 

- Russian national Anastasia Makarova - a breaststroke specialist, won three gold medals, a silver medal and a bronze medal at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics. In 2019, she won three silver medals at the World Junior Swimming Championships and set personal bests (LCM) in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. This fall, Makarova advanced to the final in the 100 and 200 breaststroke at the 2021 FINA Swimming World Cup in Kazan.

* 16 current and former Auburn swimmers competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the second-most in school history.

* The swimmers earned 13 Olympic medals, shattering the school record of six medals in a single Olympiad (three gold, seven silver, three bronze).

* Kirsty Coventry set the Auburn record of career Olympic medals and medals in a single Olympiad as she earned four to give her a career total of seven.

TUSCALOOSA – The Auburn swimming and diving team split its dual meet against Alabama on Saturday, and the victory came from the men, ranked No. 19 nationally, who took down the 13th-ranked Crimson Tide on the road with a score of 152-48. 

The Auburn women closed strong but dropped its meet to No. 8 Alabama, 161-139. 

"Proud of how both teams competed and raced today," Auburn head coach Ryan Wochomurka said. "I'm excited for the men to come away with a top 15 road win, and I'm proud of how our women battled against a top 10 team. 

"There are definitely areas where we need to sharpen and improve before we head to Florida next week and to Knoxville for the SEC Championships next month." 

WOMEN

It was too little too late, but the Tigers rallied to win the 400 freestyle relay with Rebekah Hamilton, Mykenzie Leehy, Lexie Mulvihill and Emma Steckiel in the final event of the day. Leehy put in the fastest split of the group at 49.38. 

Freshman Avery Bargeron picked up the first win of the day for the Auburn women, touching the wall first in the 200 butterfly with a time 2:00.24. The Tigers swept the event with Bargeron, Hannah Ownbey and Elysse Pardus finishing 1-2-3. 

Auburn also swept the women's 200 IM, and it was senior Carly Cummings who took first followed by Meghan Lee and Ownbey. Cummings finished fourth or better in all three of her individual races Saturday. 

Freshman Anastasia Makarova, a mid-year enrollee from Russia, finished second in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events in what was her Auburn debut. 

MEN

Auburn men notch road victory, Tigers split with Alabama
After taking second in the 200 medley relay to begin the meet, the Tigers ripped off three straight wins to grab the early lead and finished with six swimming wins in all. 

First, it was senior Aryan Makhija winning the 1,000 freestyle and leading Auburn in a 1-2-3 finish. Then Mikkel Gadgaard touched the wall first in the 200 freestyle. And to make it three in a row, Aidan Stoffle won by 0.01 in the 100 backstroke with a B-cut time (47.37). 

Freshman Mason Mathias extended the Tigers' lead with a victory in the 200 butterfly. It was the first individual race Mathias had won since he's been at Auburn. 

It was another 1-2-3 sweep in the 500 freestyle as Michael Bonson, Gadgaard and Grant Davis finished first, second and third respectively, and then senior Matthew Yish all but secured the meet for the men with a win in the 100 butterfly, finishing in 48.64. Yish also grabbed second in the 50 freestyle and swam in both relays for the Tigers. 

DIVING

The Auburn men would not have won Saturday without a first-place finish from Conner Pruitt in the men's 3-meter competition. The senior placed first with 376.43 points while fellow Tiger Hunter Kebler scored a new personal best 347.40 to take third. Pruitt also led Auburn on 1-meter with a score of 345.53 to finish second. 

On the women's side, junior Ashlynn Sullivan finished top three in both events. Her score of 280.58 was good for second on 3-meter, and she took third on 1-meter. 

UP NEXT

The Tigers will face another tough road test next week with a trip to Florida in what will be the final dual meet of the 2021-22 season.
