Softball Fall Games

  • WarTiger changed the title to Softball Fall Games

Two more victories this weekend over Gulf Coast and Snead.  Scored 17 runs, I think.  Hitting not as impressive as last weekend when we had 36 hits, but a good number of doubles and homers by Packer and McNemar.  Worth noting that Penta didn't pitch.

Tigers avenged last year's loss to AUM 8-1 today, in a game scheduled for 10 innings.  Tigers got 13 hits, including dingers from Schmidt (2) and Peralta.  Warhawks collected 8 hits, scored with help of Auburn's one error in the 9th or 10th.  Lowe started, relieved by Yarbrough, then KK.  Should b a writeup on the news page soon.

Any word on Penta not in lineup last two weekends.  I did not attend this week end so do not know if she was dressed out.

She was there and dressed out. Appears she is wearing #9 this year. Looks like she was warming up in the bull pen but have not heard or seen her in games. Godwin wasn't in the lineup this weekend either and it appears Cox has been moved to 3rd and saw some action in RF....

Thanks for that.  I believe her last outing was 4 innings vs Andrew College on 9/26.  Good to hear she was participating in warm ups.  Yarbrough can give us some good innings when she is "on".

Godwin was listed as starting  at DP vs. AUM, but we have been told previously that the published lineups only vaguely resemble reality. At any rate, Godwin is a known factor; makes sense for Dean to get a look at Lisenby, who was listed as starting at catcher, and Blaine in the fall. Glad to hear Penta was warming up.

I don't, but here's the article:  https://auburntigers.com/news/2021/10/15/softball-tiger-offense-explodes-for-22-runs-in-bevill-state-win.aspx

Must've been fun with 23 hits.  All 4 pitchers used; KK started.  Garcia with the only dinger.  I believe Kenadie Cooper was 4 for 5.

A good night for the team’s bats. The newcomers appear to be as advertised, and it seems they are definitely pushing the returning players.

I noticed a few changes on the coaching staff - Harrell promoted to Volunteer Coach and Ken Brooke added as a graduate assistant. It looks like he is a hitting specialist. Hopefully it shows up in the results.

I thought Lenti was the hitting coach? Was Brooke doing this last year too?

Lenti was the hitting coach and I think he still is but I think we’ve realized something else is needed. I do not believe Brooke was in this role last season.

From a limited search it appears he has been a "hitting instructor" in BB and SB and was involved with hitting at a community college in Arizona as recently as spring 2021.  He has some You Tube hitting videos.

I'm somewhat encouraged for next season by the showing this fall.  I know they are all jucos, but we played mostly jucos last fall and won by 2-1 and scores like that.  With some run support, we can start to climb the ladder again.

Attended the games yesterday.  First off, Godwin was not in uniform but no apparent injury.  Bryant dressed but I don’t believe she entered the games.  Participated in warm ups and frequently out of dugout to congratulate other players.  My overall impression is that we look better at this point than what I can recall over the last 3 seasons.  Position wise, it would appear currently that Peralta has a hold on SS as I believe she played the position entirely for both games (I left start of 6th vs Chipola).  Likewise, I do not believe there was a substitution for Packer in CF.  Bri Ellis got most of the innings on FB and I believe is going to be a good one.  Pretty impressive specimen.  Majors played there also and didn’t do anything to hurt her chances.  Good depth there I believe.  Pitching wise I will just say it was nice to see Yarbrough have some good innings.  Rose Roach played a lot at 2nd.  McNemar played there also.  During Chipola game they had a runner on 1st with 1 out.  Ball hit to Roach and fielded nicely and very quick throw to Peralta covering 2nd  from her SS position and rocket throw to Ellis at 1st.   There was some speed on the bases and when I saw the play developing, I had my doubts that we would get a DP but something about it was impressive….very brisk play.   I believe we had another DP vs Chipola when Packer was able to run up on a ball in shallow CF that looked like it had a chance to fall in an threw out a runner at 1st who had advanced too far toward 2nd.  Players who got time at 3rd base included Garcia (most of the innings), Cox and Blaine.  Cox also played some RF.  The first game starter there was Schmidt and she had a nice diving catch on a ball hit to shallow RF in the first game.  Garcia had the only HR I believe.  Earlier, she had hit two balls over the fence that went just foul down left field line.  The one she hit was well over fence in CF.  Another player who impresses (not to minimize play of others on the team) is Lisenby at catcher.  She is a cat quick, take-charge athlete.  She just catches my attention.  Nothing wrong that I can see out of Blaine there and Godwin is a known commodity there.  The late afternoon sun caused a couple of problems for both teams.  Additionally, Chipola had some problems making accurate throws across infield to first base resulting in 2 or 3 errors on their part.  I believe they had 5 or 6 for the game.  Overall I feel we are developing quality depth on this team with an number of young versatile players who appear very athletic.

I don't seem to recall us having a fall last year due to covid. I thought it was nothing but scrimmages and telescopic streaming.

It's entirely possible that I'm recalling two years ago; I just remember having close games with the likes of Wallace St. and losing to AUM.

Lisenby has been very impressive from what I have seen and read as well. It appears the pitching will be there this year as Lowe, Yarbrough, and Dismukes had good showings this fall. Penta still needs a lot of development in moving vertical throughout the zone. Going to be interesting to see how it all shakes out. Pitching will be there I believe.. big question to be answered is can we score the runs against the better pitching come spring and SEC play. JMO

THat's been Dean's achilles heal for the last 3 years.

He did recruit hitters this time, but they are young and it will depend if they handle the top level pitchers they will see every time out in the SEC.

Pitching will keep us close, and if we can get a little better power hitting, we can win those close games we couldn't the last few years...
