Anders Carlson moves up to second on all-time field goals in Auburn history

Auburn vs. Alabama State 9/11/21

Auburn kicker Anders Carlson moved up to second all time in field goals made on Saturday against Georgia State. After going 4-for-5 on field goals for the night, his career total is now at 62.  Anders’ four field goals were the only points Auburn scored in the first half.

“We wouldn’t be in this ballgame if it wasn’t for Anders.” said quarterback T.J. Finley.

Wes Byrum, who played from 2007-2010, was previously second on the list with 60 field goals made. Anders is now only behind his brother, Daniel, for the school record, which is set at 92.

Anders also moved up to third all time in school history for total points with 321 in his career. He passed John Vaughn, who had 312 career points. Daniel also owns this school record, with 480 points of his own.

Anders’ longest field goal of the night was a 45 yarder in the second quarter. Before missing a 40-yard attempt in the third, he had made 16 consecutive attempts, a personal record.

Postgame, head coach Bryan Harsin was quick to point out Carlson's contribution to their win.

"We have a great kicker." Harsin said. "One of the best in the nation, if not the best."

We've been spoiled for a long time at the kicking position. Last really mediocre one was probably Yost. Duval at least had his moments.

Man that was a different era. 60% on FGs and he was an All-American.

The fact that Anders is THIRTY FGs behind his brother is crazy. I don't think I truly appreciated just how consistent Daniel Carlson was when he was here. And as @AUDubsaid, we have definitely been spoiled by great kickers for almost 2 decades. We go from Duval, to Vaughn, to Byrum, to Parkey, and then the Carlson brothers. And now we have the #1 kicker in the nation committed.

You can keep going back. Back all the way to the 80s, we've had Scott Etheridge, Rod Bironas, Jarett Holmes, Jim Von Wyl, Win Lyle, Chris Johnson, Chris Knapp, Al Del Greco.

Keep going back to the 70s and it's clear it's just something we've been strong at as a program for ages.

Daniel Carlson is also the leading scorer in the history of the SEC. Not a small feat!   Perhaps the downside is that during Daniel's tenure AU teams under Malzahn were often challenged to score in the red zone, providing him more opportunities to kick 3s.  Let's hope Anders has fewer red zone opportunities this year and we score more red zone TDs.

In any conversation about him, I always referred to Daniel Carlson as Automatic Points.
