With Gus, Did we Ever Lose 5 in a Row?

And all of that is relevant to the discussion. Just as it's relevant to discuss why Gus went 6 and 4 with all SEC Competition with virtually the same team. There are points of comparison and what you say is also valid that culture change and putting in a system takes time. Its a discussion.. if you feel it ain't worthy of your interest then post elsewhere. It's really that simple isn't it?

It’s not relevant because it’s comparing apples to a freaking boulder. The fact that you don’t get that speaks volume.

The fact that Gus went 6 and 4 against all SEC competition with virtually the same roster. Let's start with that. The fact that the team went 6 and 2 to start showed the potential of the team before the great collapse.  Squandered half time leads from a coach that failed to make adjustments when things stopped working. There is a whole lot of things to discuss

Virtually the same roster? Now you are just saying stuff. You'll make up anything I see

Is this thread a joke or serious? 5 in a row or not, just look at the history under Gus. We lost 4 or 5 games most years. If thats your barometer of success,  winner winner chicken dinner. No one is gonna turn this program around in 1 year, and honestly,  it will probably take 4 years which includes relationship building at the highschool level by this staff, establishing a CBH identity,  getting a QB for his scheme and getting multiple classes of OL recruiting wins among other items. We got a ways to go but enough of the Gus references please.

I agree that Gus's time was up. The issue I have along with others is that we hired a guy that is going to take 4 years to build relationships with the high schools and has to establish his identity.  We needed I guy that already had those relationships and that identity that the HS coaches and players knew who he was and created excitement when AU hired him. We did not get that.

We don't make a bowl with Gus coaching this year's team and get skull drug by bama, like '08 type of embarrassment.

Ah, BUT, do we get to see the whirlybird using our TE as a RB like we did in the bowl game with Gus?  Stuff of legends.  If you watch the replay, it was so good, even our own team was confused by that play.

In all seriousness, I think in time Harsin has the ability to do some great things at Auburn.  The question is, will he be allotted the time needed to do so?

Cristobal, Sark, Lanning, Freeze to name a few

Lanning is a maybe. I didn't pay too much attention to him.

To be honest, I don't really think Sark or Freeze were going be instant winners and generate relationships with high school coaches and have excitement about their identity any quicker than Harsin.

Sark had his shot at head coach and didn't really light the world on fire. I'm not saying he is a bad choice. I just don't see how he would be considered a clear upgrade from Harsin.

Freeze is hard to get behind with his recruiting violations.

From what I understand, we took too long to get committed and didn't want to put the money together to get Cristobal. Even if we did get him we could have been in an awkward spot of losing him to his alma mater. I don't really see how going from Oregon to Miami is a step up. I'm not saying its a step down necessarily, but I don't see why he would leave Oregon otherwise. If he is willing to leave Oregon for Miami, what is there to say that he wouldn't do the same to Auburn?

I'm not trying to be a jerk. I just don't think that we were going to find this mysterious miracle hire that was going to put us on the ground running without a need for rebuilding.

We're just running with that?

In his first full cycle, Harsin's got us sitting 13th in the country with 19 commits, and only 5 of them are from outside the SE.  A couple of those are top juco prospects in the country at their positions. 2 of our commitments were flipped from bama and LSU. 13 of them are from AL or a state bordering it. 10 of them are 4*s.

I know we gotta do better than that to get close to our conference rivals but I'm not sure it's going to take 4 years.

Monster recruiter lands in the prime recruiting hotspot of south FL.  Lateral move but there were other considerations besides football.  In addition to the U being his alma mater, he grew up & still has family living there.  I believe his mother is in poor health plus his brother is working as a policeman there.

Auburn we need to come together, the single biggest reason for our football struggles has been the offensive line. Gus often minimize this weakness but it’s at a resent all time low. Technically they played ok this year but physically they often got manhandled. Also I’ve never seen a major DI, SEC west team consistently have QB accuracy issues. If we complete 1/2 of the wide open deep balls this year an average talent wise team has a good to great season. Finally situation football IQ must increase, if I see another 3rd and 2 with our Db’s 10 yards off the line please fire everyone or 3rd and 10+ inside the 10yd line and we play soft man for a 15yd gain please fire everyone.

The 4 years came from the post I responded to from AubFanCt. That was not my time frame. I was just responding to that. Yes we did move from a disastrous recruiting to middle of SEC. It was a good recovery. I think we benefited from some LSU being somewhat of disarray but that is what you do. At the same time, we have not met our needs in some critical areas at the moment.

I can see that. My main point was that if he was willing to leave Oregon he would be willing to leave Auburn. Having family down there makes a bunch of sense though.

The issue I see with the auburn fan base is unrealistic expectations. The sec west is a nightmare so if you have three or four seasons of 4 losses give or take followed by one season of a sec championship run all the while bringing in.. Say top 12 recruiting classes that give you a chance to pop once every four years in this division then you thank your lucky stars otherwise if you don't have a boss of a coach lined up to replace (which we obviously didn't though we got the best we could and we'll wait and see) then you risk a Tennessee death spiral which is what we are trending towards. Gus really needed to win some more of his bowl games, that was a big downer for him but I don't buy the medeocrity talk or that he was okay w medeocricy.

80, all things being equal, Cristobal could have been a good hire.  Who knows exactly what happened there between us and him last year.   You can't force someone to take an offer.   In hindsight, he would have left us after one year to go to Miami to be with his sick mom and we would be way worse off.    Maybe we got lucky there.

Sark and Freeze both have too many skeletons in their closet for me and many other alumni.   Sark, drinking issues at both Washington and USC.   Terminated from for cause USC upheld in litigation.   Divorce from wife.  Freeze recruiting violations and issues with paid escorts.   Divorced from his wife.   To me, it isn't all about winning.  It is about winning and turning out men who lead role model lives.

Lanning in my opinion was too great of a risk.   I don't think he had any head coaching g experience.   I could be wrong about that.

Same as in your job, my job, most peoples. Likeable boss's get more out of their employees than unlikeable ones.

generally speaking, for some people it'll never matter. They will always put forth max effort, for others they'll always put forth minimum effort. But there are a decent bit of people who feed off the supervisor/boss/coach.

It’s way more than that to me. My kids coaches had influence on them that is much greater than employee/boss relationship.

Did you really?

Yes. If you care to take the trouble, check out the pre-season prediction thread. My prediction was 10-2 or better.

Quoting editor Mark Murphy in this week's Inside the Auburn Tigers newsletter:

"The final record was 6-7 and there was way too much talent on the roster for that kind of result. At a minimum this team should have won nine games."

Trying to pretend Gus was a good coach is just laughable. He had his own bust season

Only if you think taking a UCF team that was 6-4 last year and turning it into a 9-4 team with a win over Florida in a bowl game is a bust.

Quoting cole 256: "But anything that I say that isn't correct feel free to show"  Since you requested it, look above. ^

You know it is about more than that.  You have to admit that we only won 3 games other than State, State and Akron.  They have a point.

That’s the crazy part based on the statistics which most like to use facts . Which is more likely to happen a losing season which never happened or a median of 8 wins. Not saying 8 wins hasn’t worn out it’s welcome but to utter out he would lose 7 or 8 games because of disdain for the guy is really reaching IMO.

I am unhappy as all the rest with a 6-7 record along with a 5 game losing streak. I am encouraged that all the losses , with the exception of UGA, were close games that AU could/should have won. Hopefully with a year of experience in the SEC under his belt, Harsin will be better prepared to win more games in the future.

That was pretty optimistic. I had much lower expectations.
