Fast Break: Auburn takes down Cats for 15th straight win

AUBURN, Alabama–After close but no cigar pushes toward the No. 1 ranking in college basketball in three other seasons, the 2021-22 Tigers made Auburn hoops history on Monday by moving to the top of Associated Press Top 25 poll. Auburn moved up one spot to replace last week’s No. 1 team, Gonzaga.

The 18-1 Tigers received 45 first place votes and 1,504 poll points. Gonzaga, which is 15-2, received 15 first place votes and 1,475 poll points. Arizona, which is ranked third with a 16-1 record, received one first place vote and 1,381 poll points. Baylor, the defending national champion, is fourth with 1,335 points. The Bears are 17-2.

A pair of homecourt victories since the last poll vs. the Georgia Bulldogs and Kentucky Wildcats extended Auburn’s winning streak to 15 consecutive games. The Tigers are 18-1 overall and lead the Southeastern Conference with a 7-0 league mark.

Kentucky remained at No. 12 in this week's poll and is the second highest ranked SEC team in the AP Top 25. Tennessee is 18th and LSU is 19th. Auburn has defeated LSU and has yet to play Tennessee.

In the previous week’s AP poll the Tigers moved from fourth to second after receiving 36 first place votes. The Tigers received 1,482 poll points, just behind Gonzaga’s total of 1,486. The Bulldogs finished ahead of the Tigers despite receiving 11 fewer first place votes last week.

After the rankings were revealed last week, Auburn head coach Bruce Pearldidn’t claim the Tigers were the best team in the country, but did say based on his team’s strength of schedule and on-the-court performance the Tigers had done enough to deserve the No. 1 spot.

“I think we are one of the Top 20 teams in the country,” Pearl said about his team prior to taking command in the SEC race with wins over Georgia and a Kentucky team that came into Auburn Arena ranked No. 12 nationally on a four-game winning streak.

“I think we are one of the top five or six teams in our league,” Pearl said about being ranked No. 2 nationally.  “As far as where we wind up, that's where we wind up. That's how you play the season so we have just got to continue to do the things that we are  doing and know we have got to get better if we're going to continue to win.”

The Tigers began the season ranked No. 22 in both the AP and coaches Top 25 polls.

In the AP rankings the Tigers moved to No. 21 in week two, No. 19 in week three and returned to No. 21 after their only loss of the season in overtime to UConn at the Battle for 4 Atlantis in The Bahamas. The Tigers resumed their climb in week five moving to No. 18, No. 13, No. 12 and No. 11 before moving into the Top 10 in week nine at No. 9.

The Tigers jumped five spots two weeks ago to No. 4 and were also No. 4 in the coaches poll. After staying No. 22 for the first three ratings by the coaches the Tigers moved to No. 20, then up to No. 21 before advancing to No. 14, No. 12, No. 11, No. 9, No. 4 and No. 2, according to the coaches.

Auburn teams had been as high as No. 2 in the AP Top 25 poll, but never No. 1, even the 1998-99 Southeastern Conference regular season champions, who went into the NCAA Tournament as a No. 1 seed. That team, coached by Cliff Ellis, climbed to No. 2 on February 22nd on the way to finishing 29-2. The Tigers were No. 4 in the final poll that season.

The following season the Tigers were ranked No. 2 in the Nov. 22nd poll and dropped in the rankings after finishing 24-10. Auburn finished that season ranked No. 24 by the AP.

The 1958-59 Tigers, coached by Joel Eaves, reached No. 2 on Feb. 16th during a season they posted a 20-2 record. Auburn finished eighth in the final AP?poll.

That 1958-59 team holds the record for the longest Auburn winning streak to start an SEC season with 13. This season’s team has the second longest streak with seven heading into Tuesday’s game at Missouri.

Overall, the Tigers are riding a 15-game winning streak, which ties a streak that ended in 1961 and another with Pearl as head coach during the 2019-20 season. The longest streak of 30 games ended on Feb. 21, 1959 and the second longest of 17 ended on January 20, 1999.

Tipoff for Tuesday’s matchup at Missouri is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CST with television coverage on the SEC Network.

That Newelll guy is simply doing it for attention.  If everyone ignored him it would be better.  He's getting just what he wants.

There was a voter that dropped us from 1 to 3 ... after beating his #10 team. There will always be someone to hate. But for now lets just enjoy the freaking #1 spot.

Woohooo Congrats to the basketball team on earning this #1 ranking. Pretty amazing to be sitting here with all the new faces on the team. They worked really hard in the offseason to come out strong in spite of the newness of playing with each other. All that hard work is paying off.

Yes, Paul seems to like the PAC12, Arizona really impressed him to get to #1.  A bit odd, UK rose 2 spots to #8 after loosing.

So awesome! Doesn’t mean much ultimately but a great accomplishment nonetheless for Coach Pearl and all of these hard working players. Wonder if Mikey is still sorry we hired that liar Pearl🤔?
