Can a player transfer to another school to get a better NIL deal?

AUBURN, Alabama — The Tigers are only one week out from their A-Day spring game.

Saturday marked their second scrimmage of spring ball, which wrapped up on a cloudy afternoon inside Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Bryan Harsin recapped the action with reporters. Here's a rundown of what he said.

• Harsin had the AU lettermen's club here this week, as well as high school coaches during Auburn's coaching clinic. Harsin says it was fun getting to know both sides this week.

• On running back Sean Jackson's scholarship: "When he got here, we thought he was a very good player. ... He's a pleasure to coach."

• Jackson's family got to come to practice today.

• Auburn had just over 85 plays in its scrimmage today.

• Said Auburn's "better players" stood out over the past two days, as the Tigers were strained with back-to-back long practices.

• Auburn worked on 2-minute drills today, as well as end-of-half and end-of-game.

• On the quarterback competition: "It's not balanced as much as it was early on." QBs are starting to create some separation.

• Says T.J. Finley has gotten "the most" first-team reps at quarterback. Oregon transfer Robby Ashford has "gotten more as we've gone on."

• Harsin is eager to see how much progress freshman Holden Geriner will make between now and the start of fall camp.

• "Summer is going to be big" for Zach Calzada at quarterback after he's been limited in spring ball.

• Finley "has a good handle" on Auburn's offense: "He sees the defense well. Now it's just about going out there and making good plays."

• What does Harsin like most about Robby Ashford? "He wants to improve. ... He's athletic, he can throw it. He's got the tools."

• On the quarterback battle: "They're still teammates. ... That's the one thing in recruiting: There's never just one guy at a position."

• A note from Harsin that he's told the quarterbacks as they've competed this spring: "Don't do something you wouldn't do in a game."

• Asked what receivers have made some good strides this spring, Harsin highlighted Malcolm Johnson Jr.

• On hybrid receiver/tight end Landen King: "Not sure what to call him yet. ... We just need him out there."

Dallas Cowboys OC Kellen Moore talks Bryan Harsin, QB development and more

AUBURN, Alabama–A week out from Auburn’s annual spring football game, Coach Bryan Harsin said he isn’t sure what the format will be for the annual A-Day intrasquad contest next Saturday. However, he did say that he liked what he saw from the Tigers at Saturday’s practice that included a light scrimmage.

Asked if a decision has been made on what fans will see for A-Day, Harsin said, “Not yet. I don’t know if we are going to have a chance to divide the squads.

“It could be O and D,” he said. “You always like to do that. It is fun to have the squad when you have 100 and some guys or at least the 85, but we will see.

“What I really want to get done on A-Day is make sure we finish up because that is our last practice,” Harsin said. “We don’t have the extra practice after A-Day so (I want to see) that we go out there and accomplish what we need to in that scrimmage and we get the live work.

“Also, we want to get in situations for things that we need to work on,” he pointed out.

“I always felt like when I was a coordinator, I know the spring games and there was a lot around them and it becomes just about the game, but you are still trying to work on things,” the head coach said.

“You are still trying to get those last final touches because this is the last time we are going to do real football until August. I know our coaches, they take that very seriously.

“The coordinators and the assistant coaches want to see certain things they can get on tape one more time before we going into evals next. Also, there are some positions where it might be close where you want to get more information as a coach.

“You are going to be (evaluating) next week with your players and you have got to see some things,” Harsin said. “Maybe there is something that separates and there are a few things you can give them that come out of that game.”

Many of the 85 plays in the scrimmage were not full contact on Saturday. Practicing back-to-back days with high school coaches on campus Thursday night, Friday and Saturday for a coaching clinic and to watch practices, Harsin noted that one thing that stood out of “a lot of consistency from the better players” and he said, “It was good to see that.”

The coach singled out the tight ends for playing well as a group and said he likes what he is seeing from Landen King, who is playing wide receiver and tight end. A newcomer at wide receiver, Jay Fair, caught a touchdown pass in the scrimmage and won praise from Harsin for his play this spring as did receivers Malcolm Johnson and Shedrick Jackson.
