2022-23 Men's Roster Line Up Projections

Recommended Posts

Haven't read all the thread but what's everyone's thoughts on the projected lineup if we get Phillips? Seems like we're really tall but need a guard.

I prefer if Johnson were coming off the bench bringing the energy. Hopefully the freshman can ball out during practice and show his shooting touch.

PG: Green, Westry, Zep, Donaldson
SG: KD, Zep, Westry
SF: Phillips, Flan, Westry, C-Mo (Flan may start in the early season bur can be passed quickly if his play doesn't pick up.)
PF: Jaylin, Traore, Phillips
C : Broome, Cardwell, Traore, Jaylin, Stretch

I have not watched any film on Westry. If he were pressed into service like Flan was 2 years ago, can he handle the ball like a true point guard?

and on another note, I can see Traore passing Jaylin at some point.

I would hope:

1. Zep, Green (basically how it was), Tre

2. Flanigan, KD

3. Westry, Moore

4. Traore, Jaylin

5. Broom, Dylan

and one thing with mine is that it’s not taking staggering into account. Even if Moore was backup SF nominally, he’s almost never seeing the court with both Flanigan and very rarely, one of the smaller guards flexing in for minutes.  I see us having a 9 man rotation as of rn

@lutzcammedHe's played a lot at point in high school. Also of the 4 major sites 247 is the only 1 to not rate him as a Guard.

I think elitor's info is more current than 24/7s. One more time for those who missed it, here's Westry's NBA draft evaluation from NBA draft room. Sounds like a point guard to me:

Chance Westry is a big combo guard with great ball handing, creativity, and a deep bag. He can play off the ball as needed and is a versatile player but is at his best breaking down the defense with the ball in his hands.

He’s great at penetrating the lane, collapsing the defense and dishing to teammates. He’s got special passing ability, quick, on point and perfectly timed.

Chance plays with a ton of confidence and seems to know he’s the man on the court. He’s a big shot maker and a leader in the clutch. His shooting form is solid and he’s got a soft touch. And he has all the makings of a future NBA range 3pt threat.

Also projected him as a potential first round pick in 2023 or 2024. I think he's going to have even more impact on the team than the other outstanding newcomers.

I was thinking something similar with a few minor adjustments

1. Zep, Green (basically how it was), Tre, Westry

2. KD, Westry, Flanagan

3. Flanagan, Moore/Westry with Westry having a good chance to start by the end of the season. Note: I am also curious if Moore will be much improved this season as well and move Westry more towards a 2.

4. Jaylin, Traore, Moore with Traore having a good chance to start by the middle of the season.

5. Broom, Dylan, Traore/Jaylin when small ball is preferred

Word from Hoke is Zep is likely moving to the 2 because of his quality shooting & not providing much punch at the point. Chance is expected to get more PT at the point than Tre , with Tre being a real redshirt possibility.

& my info came from Hoke. Nate's a good dude at 247 but I trust Hoke a lot more with this stuff.

I wouldn't be shocked if this was the lineup coming into whatever the bball equivalent of fall camp is, but I'd have to think by game 1, one of Westry or Traore break through.

One thing to consider is the shooting with the forward/big spot. Most people's top 2 at the 5 spot is gonna be non-shooters that are purely rollers. Depending on how Jaylin and Traore are looking from outside, that could influence who starts at the 4, to give some balance.

Interesting. I thought Zep was a really steady 1 with so few turnovers, but he also didn't seem to be a Chris Paul type with lots of assists. And his 3 pt shooting plus his defense against the other team's 2 would be valuable. I'm not sure how much it matters who starts, but I'd probably give KD the starting nod over Zep, unless Pearl wants KD's scoring/energy on the 2nd unit.

If Westry can also run an efficient point then that would be excellent. Can you imagine having an well run lineup with Westry, Flanigan, Phillips (fingers crossed), Traore & Jaylin on the floor at the same time? If only for 10 minutes per game, that could create a lot of matchup issues for certain opponents. Even if you insert 1 of Green, KD or Broom in there if we don't get Phillips, its still crazy length and athleticism on average. Pearl is going to have fun figuring out his lineups and subs with this team.

Agreed. That's why I was assuming it may be Jaylin starting based on how he was shooting in the NCAA tourney.  If Traore is the better shooter, then I don't see how you can have him on the bench very long even if he plays some time at the 5 along side Jaylin.

Big surprise, E has my lineup card...it's going to be difficult to keep Chance off the floor, but Wendell is the classic Pearl PG, so he might do it at least early in the season. Either way, it'll be nice to not have to worry that there's someone on the bench who can take care of the ball if needs be.

@ellitor Any idea if Bruce might put Wendell and Chance on the floor at the same time? I would think that could be a dynamic attack...

Finally.  Someone sees Zep as a little stale generating offense from the point(another reason he didn’t turn the ball over).

but he’s got a nice shot but just seemed hesitant to take it. He can provide those midrange jump shots with better shooting percentages if he’ll take them.

It seems like the Center spot is definitely going to be Johni Broom. He seems to be a replacement for Walker Kessler. Averaging a double double and that block shot presence was huge for us last year.

If E says that Chance Westry will get PT at the point position that's big. His scouting report and film says he can shoot it. We need someone to pick that up. Not that we will have a Jabari replacement but that dude could shoot better than anyone I've seen since Kevin Durant. But we need someone who can reliably hit a bucket when we need to. It sounds like he likes the ball and can create his own shot or find others. Big Time. I would think that we would experiment with Green and Westry on the floor if that's the case. I really do like KD Johnson coming off the bench by mid-season. It just seems like a no-brainer but CBP is going to have fun playing with this lineup.

A big ? is Flannigan. He needs a good offseason! He lost alot of his playmaking ability and wasn't the go to scorer because of Kessler, Green and Jabari but he couldn't hit his shot when he needed to. He needs a pull up shot but we'll see how things go. Because of his defense and rebounding, I could see him starting though.

If Traore is the 4 then I am curious if we put Jaylin at the 3. He has an outside shot, is really athletic. I think it depends on matchups though, because if another team goes small, then we may have Zep, Westry/KD Johnson and Flannigan at the guards. I think Westry and Traore are the future for Auburn.

It seemslike my ideal lineup would be

PG Chance Westry or Green

SG Flannigan

SF Jaylin

PF Traore

C Broom

Not right now. Has a lot of work to do.

Given Westry can play the 1-3 I doubt there are many line ups off the table.

We could be scary good come Tournament time next year even without Phillips. Add him, and good grief...

No. Would struggle defensively with other SFs.

SG Flannigan

Can't believe a number of y'all want him there given how much he has struggled with handling the ball & TOs the past 2 years.

I wouldn’t be mad at Yohan being off the bench, nowadays a 6th and 7th man can easily eclipse a starter. It happened for this very program a few times in the past few years. I trust Bruce to navigate the politics of a depth chart

Flanigan

In all fairness, Flanigan was the best player on the team for multiple games a couple years ago, played multiple different positions, impacted the game even when he wasn't scoring, and had some draft buzz. He seemed like an Okoro-lite at that point.

It's hard to know how much of success and subsequent drop-off was due to having a lot of usage on a bad team vs. loss of strength, confidence & mobility due to the injury. It also could have been partially due to team makeup & spacing. Sharife, Thor, and our 3 pt. specialists obviously gave him different spacing and opportunities than KD, Jabari & Kessler.

To me, he looked smaller (strength wise), moved slower, and seemed less confident last year. But I still hold out hope that he'll be an impact player / fringe NBA draft pick if he can get back to that Okoro-lite level of play. I know he still had issues with turnovers and I thought 2 years ago that it had to do with him trying to play point before Sharife arrived, but perhaps you're right on that concern. And if so he needs to clean that up if he wants minutes IMO.

Good to know. I don't think so I think Jaylin is quick enough to keep up with some small forwards. Depends on who it is. Vs. Arkansas I think he would struggle. Vs. Others, I think they would struggle vs him. IMO.

I didn't say that Flan  would be the best on the floor at SG but that seems the likely place. Maybe SF is the best spot but He's going to have to pick up his game for us this year, no doubt. I'm not a fan of the smaller guards on the floor together because they seem to be liability defensively. Hence the SG position is a big question mark for me unless KD Johnson seals that up but I like Westry to start this year.

Watching Yohan's film, Its going to be hard to keep him on the Bench. I'm excited to see what Coach Pearl does.
