The abortion issue may well be the next "fiscally conservative" rallying cry for Republicans.  It defined much of the rhetoric until,,, it didn't.

Extreme ideological positions rarely have meaning in practical reality.

Too bad we lack the will and unity required to eliminate abortion on a practical humane level.

I think the best compromise may be federally guaranteed legal abortion in the first trimester, and then states can adjust that later if they feel it necessary. 

 

The pro life element that wants it banned all together should be largely ignored as that's not a realistic or humane outcome, but I don't think unlimited abortion access should be allowed either. Like the charts shows, a middle ground is really the most widely supported option.

Bans that only provide exceptions for rape or for the mothers life are essentially outright bans in my mind. 

Any state that doesn't allow at least first trimester abortions upon request are bans.
