Tigers open NCAA Tournament Golf Regional

Off to a good start pay attention to how young we are. We have 2 freshman 2 Soph. and 1 junior and both our freshmen shot the lower rounds.

 

 

NORMAN, Okla. –  The Auburn men's golf team opened NCAA Tournament play with 8-under, 280 to position itself inside the top three following Monday's round of action at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club.
 
"We are a very young team but extremely talented and skilled. Our guys played with a sense of maturity today, and I'm extremely proud of them. We need to get the putters rolling to have a chance to compete for a championship. It's exciting to continue to watch them grow as young men and players."
 
Auburn was led by none other than sophomore J.M. Butler, who shot the low round of the day with a 66 (-6). He was aided by five birdies on the back nine, four of which came in his final five holes.

The Louisville, Kentucky product's opening frame 66 is tied for the second lowest round in Jimmie Austin history. Butler's total stands tied with five others, including Jordan Spieth in 2012. 
 
Butler's score also marked his team-leading 13^th round in the 60s this season. Of his 28 rounds on the year, he has produced 21 at par or better.
 
Freshman Brendan Valdes recorded the next lowest round on behalf of the Tigers with a 69 (-3). Valdes was aided by five birdies on his opening nine and his second career eagle on hole 13.
 
Austin, Texas native Evan Vo continued to be a steady hand for the Tigers as he 72 (E) on the day. The freshman birdied and bogeyed just once, shooting even par on 16 of 18 holes.
 
Vo leads the 2022 roster with six rounds at par this season.
 
Following tightly behind, junior Alex Vogelsong and sophomore Carson Bacha both shot 1-over 73 on Monday. Both men enter Tuesday tied for 30^th on the individual leaderboard.
 
After 18 holes, the home team and No. 1 seed Oklahoma leads at 11-under. Southeastern Conference foe South Carolina is in second place a stroke back from the Sooners, and both Auburn and Utah are tied for third at 8-under. Texas sits in the final cutoff position at 282 (-6).
 
The Tigers have a seven-stroke advantage on the dreaded sixth place position.
 
For Tuesday's competition, Auburn will be paired with No. 1 seed Oklahoma and No. 4 seed South Carolina, teeing off at 8 a.m. CT on hole one.

Damn we just killed it today we seat at 20 under yep I said 20 under atm OU is 6 shots back after starting off leading the regional yesterday. We shot 19 strokes better today then USCe who was ahead of us by 2 strokes. What's a shock is it could have been even better if not for Evan having a bad round with two double bogeys and a 77

Another thing to add is OU is #1 in the country and playing on their home course. hard to believe we shot 9 strokes better then them and we were paired with them and USCe

NORMAN, Okla. –  Using the low team score of the day, 276 (-12), Auburn men's golf surged into first place following Tuesday's second round of NCAA Regional competition at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club.
 
The Tigers' day two total is tied for the second lowest all-time in Jimmie Austin postseason history.
 
"We played some solid golf today as a team, and it was fun to watch our guys go out there and compete," Auburn head coach Nick Clinard said. "This group is extremely talented and has a great mindset. Their youthful enthusiasm is contagious, and they are looking forward to having the opportunity to compete for a championship tomorrow."
 
Through the first 36 holes of play, Auburn holds at 556 (-20) with a six-stroke lead over second place Oklahoma and a 17-stroke lead over the cutoff position, sixth place. If the Tigers wish to advance through to the NCAA Championship, they will need to finish inside the top five following Wednesday's finale.
 
At 20-under, the team has also jumped into the program's record book with the eighth-lowest two-round tally in Auburn history.
 
Auburn's earth-scorching day was spearheaded by freshman Brendan Valdes who shot 4-under 68 to tie his career low through two rounds at 137 (-7). Valdes matched one bogey with three birdies and an eagle to jump into third place. The round also marked the second consecutive with an eagle for Valdes.
 
Sophomore J.M. Butler also continued to produce at a steady pace, carding a 3-under 69 to bring his total to 135 (-9), second amongst all individual golfers. Butler trails the leader, Travis Vick of Texas, by a single shot.
 
Once more sophomore Carson Bacha and junior Alex Vogelsong proved to be contributors to the Tiger lineup, shooting a pair of below-par rounds at 69 (-3) and 70 (-2), respectively. Both men managed to make birdie double the number of times they bogeyed with Bacha making six birdies and Vogelsong making four.
 
Following Auburn's lead, the top five teams currently in the cut for Nationals are No. 1 seed Oklahoma (562/-14), No. 2 seed Texas (568/-8), No. 5 seed Ole Miss (568/-8) and No. 9 seed Utah (572/-4).
 
For Wednesday's action, the Tigers will be paired with Oklahoma and Texas and will tee off with Evan Vo on the first hole at 8 a.m. CST.

Well so much for the good rounds we given up 11 strokes back to OU sitting at 5 behind them and we're not even at the turn. Still some golf left but we need some birdies and fast. OU is playing how we did yesterday.

We're going to the advance no doubt about that just would like to finish in first today but not looking good atm

Ended up 2nd 8 behind OU which shot what we did yesterday 12 under. We were lucky had to birdie last two holes to beat out Ole Miss by 1. Wish we had played better today but its a learning experience for all our young player. We had two players finish in the top 10 were as OU had 4 in top 10. On to Nationals and see what happens.

Golf is so much a mind game from day to day.

Still a great job by this team. Especially liked seeing this after do so poorly at end of SEC championship.  This showed some real guts to come back like this.

And to be so young...2 freshmen, 2 soph's and 1 junior. Our two freshmen were in the top 10
