Former Auburn quarterback Jeremy Johnson has joined the coaching staff at Montgomery Catholic.

Johnson is coaching running backs for the Knights.

“It’s huge for us,” Catholic head coach Kirk Johnson said. “We hired one of the city’s best. He’s a good young coach who played at a high level. He can relate to our kids. He’s been through a lot of the same things they’ve been through.”

Kirk Johnson said Jeremy Johnson has been with the team for about two weeks already. Ironically, Catholic’s star running back, Jeremiah Cobb, is committed to Auburn. However, Kirk Johnson said that was no factor in the hiring process.

“We were thinking about the benefit to our program as a whole not just Jeremiah,” Kirk Johnson said. “It’s cool for him, but the knowledge Jeremy will bring to everyone on that side of the ball is important.

“He’s very energetic. Kids can relate to him. It’s been really good.”

Johnson threw for 3,193 yards and 31 touchdowns while rushing for 705 yards and seven scores as a senior at Carver-Montgomery and was named Alabama’s 2012 Mr. Football. He finished his high school career with more than 8,200 passing yards and was a U.S. Army All-American and 4-star recruit before signing with Auburn.

At Auburn, Johnson completed 179 of 282 passes in his career for 2,224 yards and 20 touchdowns. He went undrafted but did spend time in the Canadian Football League and the Arena League before deciding to enter the coaching profession.

After two years as a middle school coach, Johnson coached quarterbacks at his alma mater a year ago.

He joins a Catholic team that went 13-1 a year ago and lost in the state semifinals.
