Auburn quarterback reportedly unavailable for Missouri game this week

 

Auburn will be without a quarterback this week as the Tigers look to get back on track after the Penn State game, according to a report from Tom Green of AL.com.

TJ Finley won’t play because of a shoulder injury, and it’s unclear if it will keep him out of action beyond this weekend.

This report comes a day after Auburn coach Bryan Harsin said Finley would not miss any time because of the injury, and added that Finley would be “good going into this week.” Auburn (2-1) and Missouri (2-1) will meet at 11 a.m. local time Saturday in Jordan-Hare Stadium on ESPN.

Finley this season is 33-for-53 passing for 431 yards with a touchdown and 4 interceptions.

This obviously means more time for Robby Ashford, the only other QB to get meaningful snaps for Auburn. Harsin was asked about Zach Calzada, the Texas A&M transfer, and his health, and Harsin said he was not aware of an injury that has kept Calzada off the field as the other QBs have struggled with turnovers.

Why would Harsin say he was not aware of an injury that has kept Calzada out. It seems the answer would be either yes or no. To say he's not aware just sounds as clueless as he looked last Saturday.

I have not heard the exchange but the way it was worded in text, it sounded like he was being a smart ass towards the person asking about it.  I think he said something along the lines of, do you know something I don't because as far as I am aware he is not injured.

AUBURN, Alabama—On Monday we mentioned the likelihood that Auburn starting quarterback T.J. Finley would miss the Missouri game this week and on Tuesday that was confirmed with sources telling Auburn247 that Finley could be out several weeks while dealing with a sprained throwing shoulder suffered in the loss to Penn State.

Auburn's starter the first three games of the 2022 season, Finley is completing 62 percent of his passes for 431 yards and one touchdown with four interceptions this season. 

On Monday, Auburn's Bryan Harsin was asked about Finley's role as the starter for the Tigers heading into the Missouri game.

"We'll see," he said. "Like I said, we'll let guys compete this week. It's Monday. We haven't decided what we're going to do. Through the week of practice it'll be decided. We'll let guys compete, and we'll put the best guys out there on Saturday to go play."

Without him available, Auburn is expected to turn to sophomore transfer Robby Ashford against Missouri. Coming to Auburn from Oregon, Ashford has received his first career action this season and has thrown for 245 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions while completing 52 percent of his passes. Also a weapon on the ground, Ashford is second on the team with 158 rushing yards and is averaging 6.6 yards per carry.

That makes Zach Calzada and true freshman Holden Geriner the next guys up for the Tigers behind Ashford. Yet to see action this season after transferring from Texas A&M, Calzada started 10 games for the Aggies a season ago. Both Calzada and Geriner will get reps this week to prepare for Saturday.

We know what to expect from Ashford but we may see Calzada and/or Geriner in action for the 1st time and I think that'll be very interesting.

I hope our coaches realize that these players can play 4 games before red shirting. 

Anyways, this early diagnosis can give us time to mold the offense around Robby. Give him a chance to succeed.  Please design pass plays for him though. Can't be all run.

Well, this is it. If Robby can't make this team work with his ability as a scrambler, we're almost guaranteed to go 3-9.

The Calzada situation seems like a mess. Long story short don't bank on seeing him, and Hoke's saying that it's not up to the coaches. Reading between the lines I bet his camp is thinking of shutting him down and going for a medical redshirt. 

@abw0004 Wilborn from al.com saying get ready to possibly see Geriner get trot out there. Sounds like he'll be backup at minimum. No choice with TJ out and Calzada possibly not wanting to go. And hell I remember it being said Robby is gimpy too.

Not sure what you're hearing on that front. Hopefully Geriner brings it this week. Would at least like to see him play for the guy that recruited him in one game.

Ahh the inevitable QB carousel that one sees right before a coach gets booted out the door. At this rate, Trey Lindsey will be leading us into battle vs Bama. 
 

I hope they don’t put Holden through having to play behind Killian and his merry band of misfits.

TJ and Robby have thrown 2 TD's and 6 INT's combined this year. Robby has thrown for 245 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT's and 51% completion percentage. Yikes!!! But, with our terrible O-Line play, this doesn't surprise me. Seeing those numbers and how we've struggled the last 2 games, it's even more confusing why we haven't seen Calzada. Atleast get him in for a series or two. The coaching decisions are very suspect.
