Softball vs. Alabama State

Recommended Posts

Auburn leads 6-0 after scoring 6 in the 2d.  Abbey Smith with a bases loaded double.  Penta opened the game in the circle.  This is billed as a 10-inning game.

Edit:  We score 5 more in the 4th ;  ASU committed 3 errors, and Blaine had a 2-RBI single.  Penta with 9 Ks after 4.

Edit:  Lead is up to 14-0 after 6.  Widra now pitching, also drove in K. Cooper after she doubled.  Godwin with a Sac Fly.

Edit:  Millie Roberts drives in a run with a Sac Fly, and AU leads 15-0 after 7.

Thanks for the updates. Glad to see the offense have an explosion.

Emmah Rolfe gave up a leadoff triple in the 8th, then three Ks to preserve the shutout.  Nothing in the 9th, but McCrary and Garcia had hits in the 10th to help plate 3 more runs.  18-0 Auburn going to bottom 10.

Edit:  the final was 18-0, as Auburn notched 17 hits, with only one triple for ASU.  Penta, Widra, and Rolfe faced 35 batters, striking out 20.  Full article at auburntigers.com softball page, but my computer has lost its ability to copy/paste.

The following is not intended to belittle any team or their players.  I have a lot of respect for players of all teams who obviously put in a lot of time and effort to compete at this level.  Competition between a team such as Auburn vs Alabama State does not add difficulty of schedule points but mostly serves to  place a W in the won/loss column and provides some non-starters some playing time. Occasionally, the underdog wins and the memory lingers for decades while the defeated Goliath can only hang their heads and congratulate the victors.  Please indulge my attempt at a bit of humor and history.

Sunday, October 9, 2022            Auburn Tigers vs Alabama State Hornets

Thank goodness for those final 3 runs in the last inning to preserve the 18 – 0 victory.  This sets up what will be a “revenge game” for the Hornets when we play them during a regular season mid-week game on May 3rd, 2023, sandwiched between conference games vs South Carolina and Mississippi State......"Trap Game"??

During the period between 2004 – 2022 our record vs Alabama State is 16 – 0.  Our largest margin of victory was 22 – 0 in a 2018 game.  Who can forget that famous April 23, 2014 game played at Auburn when a 34 -14 –1 Auburn team faced off against the 16 – 22 Alabama State Hornets.  The 435 fans in attendance were kept on the edge of their seats during this epic contest which ended up being a 5 - 3 victory for the Tigers.  Hilary Mavromat started in the circle for the Tigers and surrendered 3 runs in the first inning.  She pitched a total of 3 innings but did not allow any more runs in scattering 6 total hits.  She was relieved by Jenna Abbott (2 innings), followed by Marcy Harper (1 inning) then someone named Lexi Davis (1 inning) who was credited with the save.

Auburn scored 2 in the 1st, 2 in the 2nd and one in the 6th.  At the plate, Morgan Estell had 2H and scored 1 run, Kasey Cooper  (2 AB) had 1 H, 1 SB and scored 1 run, Austyn West had 1 hit and an RBI, Kelsey Bogards 2H and 1 run, Ashley Leon 1h and 1 run and an obscure player named Tiffany Howard had 2H, 1 SB and scored 1 run.  She put an explanation mark on the victory in the bottom of the 6th  with AU down to their last out of the inning she hit a single, stole second  and then advanced to 3rd on a throwing error and scored on an error by catcher.  What a game!

That 2018 team that we defeated 22-0 went on to make the NCAAs and played in the Tuscaloosa Regional. (second time ever) They were coached by Chris Steiner-Wilcoxson, a 1997-99  Auburn Tiger.  She hit the first home run in Auburn softball history.  In 2014, however, she was coaching AUM to a national championship.  Not sure where she is now; she coached ASU at least through the 2020 season.

Whiskey, that is some great trivia.  When I looked her up on the "net" she last coached 2 years at FIU and was fired after 2021 season.  From what I read, she had been long time Auburn fan but they did not have a softball program when she graduated from high school.  She went to Huntington in 1996 and played with Coach Tina Deese who became the first HC at AU the following year in 1997.  Steiner was one of two Hunting players to follow Deese to AU for her sophomore season.  A side note....She was followed by Mike Larabee at FIU.  Their record last year was 19 - 31.
