He is a project with a lot of upside. We can add 45 players though so it makes sense to give him a spot.

Glad to see this. We’ve let some local talent slip away over the years and it seems like we’re reversing that trend.

Auburn lands commitment from Opelika pass-rusher Brenton Williams

Auburn doesn't have a permanent head coach yet, but it does have a need along the defensive line.

Just a few days after 4-star defensive lineman Darron Reed flipped from LSU to Auburn, Auburn added 3-star edge Brenton Williams from just down the road at Opelika. Listed as an edge, at 6-foot-4, 245 pounds, Williams projects more so as a defensive end or pass rusher, fitting a similar mold to Reed and 4-star commit Wilky Denaud out of Fort Pierce, Fla.

With offers from Kansas, Georgia Tech, Memphis and others, Williams committed to Coastal Carolina after an official visit back on June 12. Williams didn't camp much and was an unknown quantity in some aspects, but Coastal Carolina evaluated and found him. Thanks to a strong senior season for the Bulldogs, though, Williams started to catch the attention of some bigger programs.

Similar to Clemson, Coastal Carolina utilizes a pretty strict no-visit policy and once you visit another school, you'll likely lose your spot. But the hometown Tigers offered Williams shortly after Bryan Harsin was fired, leaving him a tough choice.

Ultimately Williams decomitted from Coastal Carolina on Nov. 17 and officially announced his offer from Auburn. He also reported offers from Penn State, Mizzou and Michigan State.

Auburn ended up being the choice, even despite the uncertainty around Auburn's future at head coach.

The No. 1,260 player in the industry-generated 247Sports Composite and No. 104 edge, Williams is Auburn's 13th commitment of the class. Along the defensive line he joins Reed and Denaud as versatile defensive linemen, 3-star Jamarrion Harkless who is committed as a nose tackle, and 4-star Ashley Williams who is committed as a true edge rusher.

Williams is now Auburn's second commitment with interim head coach Cadillac Williams leading the way as Auburn inches closer to the Dec. 21 Signing Day and looks to start filling up its class.

Auburn's current class sits at No. 34 in the 247Sports team recruiting rankings, after bottoming out in the low 50's toward the end of Harsin's tenure.

Right now Auburn is set to lose Derick Hall, Eku Leota, Marcus Bragg, Morris Joseph Jr., Marquis Burks and potentially Colby Wooden along the defensive line going into next year.
