Roster Management 01/19/20223 Update

The coaching staff gave us some reason to hope there will be a quick turnaround.  That’s about the best we could hope for given the horrendous job of roster management going back all the way back to the last couple of years of Gus.  Harsin’s recruiting was about like getting put on probation.  If not for the portal we would be in big trouble.  As it is they will be filling holes for a few years but the silver lining is they can offer the young guys playing time which seems to be one of the things they value most.

LB - we were blessed with OP and McClain now we're sort of left out in the cold. I don't like most of our options here. Tolan is unproven while Keys can provide at least some leadership there.

Think LBs is overly harsh.  Zakoby McClain wasn't even on the team last year. 🤣  We only lost Own Pappoe's 75 tackles.  Adding Keys/Tolan, minus OP is probably a push.

You know the drill by now. I'm going to take a deep dive into the additions, departures, and remaining needs for the 2023-24 Auburn Football Roster. A lot of this is my opinion and strictly based on observations and a few years of really tracking these decisions and movements. If I'm Auburn I feel like I have improved at the following positions:

  • RB - losing Tank is hard but I have to think the average has increased with Battie and Cobb joining the room. Those are two legitimate backs replacing one departure.
  • TE - this could be considered a "hot take" but I think we improved with the addition of Fairweather and the loss of our security blanket. I have felt for a while that Deal, Fromm, Frazier, and Ducker could contribute but JSS has absolutely monopolized the targets.
  • OL - we have quite frankly sucked here for some time. Adding eight bodies to the room (most of which with multiple years of eligibility) is undeniably a win. Jones, Britton, and Wade are all likely starters with Wright as well. Auburn just needs a 5th and 6th man to step up to see a vast improvement here.
  • DB - really didn't lose anyone and added four athletic freshmen for depth. Still expect to see a solid post-Spring addition.

Positions where we stayed mostly the same:

  • WR - didn't really lose a major contributor but didn't really add any. Sorey is athletic but has been playing horrendous competition in high school. Mardner is a solid addition but we shall see how it works out.
  • QB - we definitely lost depth but ultimately Robby proved to be our best option out of the three. Hank Brown and Holden Geriner have upside but no proof of concept. We desparately need a starter from the portal after the Spring.

Positions where we got worse:

  • DL - Derrick Hall and Colby Wooden are going to be incredibly hard to replace. We have bodies but a lot of guys that haven't met their potential yet.
  • LB - we were blessed with OP and McClain now we're sort of left out in the cold. I don't like most of our options here. Tolan is unproven while Keys can provide at least some leadership there.

I think the staff has done a great job filling out a terribly managed roster. Still, there are a lot of guys coming in with talent but not necessarily results that you can point to for the future. What they can manage to do in a short amount of time will be interesting.

The news for any more additions will likely be slow until after the Spring game. It's time for me to do my homework on the 2024 class.

Great write up. Thanks. What are your thoughts on our safeties. I think you left them out and just listed the corners. Also, I think Oscar Chapman returning is a huge plus. Same for McPherson.

If TJ is transferring, why is he working out with team? That seems counterintuitive.

If you want your scholly then you need to participate with the team.  Also, put some tape together for transferring or outside shot that he thinks he may win with the new coach.

Only opinion I disagree with is LB.  Think Tolan and Keys will more than replace OP's contribution.

Thanks for writeup..enjoyed it.

Agreed.  I think we’re the same or better at LB.
I think Zeek was spot on everywhere else.   Thanks for all your work Zeek!

I think that the DL as a whole is going to end up being better. I like our inside guys. Where we are really going to feel the hurt is at Edge. Those guys are going to have to really step up to replace Hall, and Leota.

I find it pretty interesting the number of our departing portal entries that have yet to sign with another team. Like, it’s kinda weird lol. Kinda telling i guess.

Need to add Mosiah Nakili-Kite to the DL.  We need to sign a good edge rusher and another LB and I'll feel a lot better about the defense.  I agree with  Zeek that we desperately need to sign a seasoned QB from the portal in May.

“I think the staff has done a great job filling out a terribly managed roster” and they did it in like what, six weeks?

Zeek I always love your write ups. This is another very good piece. I do however disagree about a couple of positions.

LB. I don't think we got worse at LB. I think we got significantly better. McClain doesn't count as a departure he wasn't even on the team last year. Pappoe has been one of the biggest disappointments of not living to the hype I have seen in a long time. I think Keys is definitely a help and will most certainly help make up for weakness on Edge Rushers. He seems to be best as a blitzing LB IMO. Tolan is going to be a multi-year starter I believe and I also still think Riley takes a big step forward. I think at worst we push but honestly I believe we got better.

DL is the other one I would argue with. Yes we lose Hall and Wooden, But Justin Rogers is a bonafied stud in the middle. I also believe Kite is going to be a solid player as well. Interior DL we got better I think overall. Edge is where we went down hill. Just my opinion. Great work as always my friend.
