Our stars really didn't pan out in that 2004 class did they? Leon is the only one still on the team, and he will get his first real shot at starting this year. I know that "stars don't matter", but I can't help but get excited when I see the talent level that was redshirted last year and that is coming in this year. We know what this staff can do with a class full of two and three stars, I can't wait to see what they can do with a class full of four stars. The thing that makes me feel good is that even if they have an off year in recruiting (2004), they know how to make the best of it.

If i'm not mistaken, Pat Sims is still on the team and got some good playing time this year.

The '02 class had 5 SOLID contributors, plus Tre Smith & Montae Pitts. Justin Bruce had a medical problem and never wore shoulder pads for the Tigers. So I can't count him out.

The '03 class had 4 SOLID athletes. Jacobs was the real deal, though he left for greener pastures. I didn't include Tez Dolittle because he hasn't yet lived up to his hype.

The '04 class REALLY hasn't panned out.

I see A LOT of promise from the '05 class. The '06 class cannot be judged since they ALL practically redshirted last year.

Yes, but with or without Sims, this goes to show how important Coaching stability has become to the recruiting game these days.

So is Leon Hart.

Sims is playing and coming on strong toward the end of this past football season.

Sorry. Yeah, Pat has turned out to be a great asset to the team. He didn't look like he was going to make it for the longest time, however. I think he came in with issues that he has since put behind him and now appears to be realizing his potential.

I guess my point was that the majority of the help we have gotten from that class has had to come from lower rated players who have really turned it up at this level. It also shows the trap some of these high rated kids fall into. I've always felt that "five star talent usually brings a five star ego with it." A lot of these highly rated kids aren't used to not being "the big dog." Some of them have a hard time adjusting when they learn that on this level EVERYONE is big, fast, strong, and isn't scared of them. That is why you never know until years down the road how good a class really was. You can't coach chemistry and some classes have it and some don't. The senior leadership on the 2004 class was off the chart, and, at times, I felt it was a weakness of this year's team. Not that there was a lack of talent, they just didn't seem to be of one mind at times.

Again, I can't wait to see how this class and last years class will figure into things over the next few years.

I know there's arguments on both sides about the star ratings etc. But, I still maintain that when you consistently get highly rated players in your class, you WILL be successful as long as you don't have an idiot at the helm.

No stats to back this up, but UT through the 90's comes to mind. Their classes always seemed to be rated highly and I truly believe they wound up winning 90% of their games simply by having more athletes than the other team on most occasions. Fulmer is a good coach but cetainly not great at the x's and o's. They have always played a very conservative, run oriented game plan. Very rarely did you see them smoking teams 49-3. They would usually just wear everyone down by the 4th quarter because they had quality athletes 2 deep at every position. Same philosophy as Bear and Dye.

I can't say any ONE of the guys in our class will be a superstar. But more of these kids will pan out than the other way around. When you have this many horses in a class, you can't help but succeed.

I never saw it but I certainly remember hearing about it. If I'm not mistaken, nobody but the AU coaches new about him until he went to a camp and then everyone heard about his time. I was told that, anyway. Regardless, his speed was definitely a major topic of his recruitment. Although it doesn't stand out in recognition of plays on the football field. A lot like Alexander Wright. He could burn the field but we seldom went vertical with Dyes philosophy. But, just having him on the field held the db's in check for 4 quarters.
