Saving seats in the student section

Yesterday I got to the game an hour and a half before the game. There were empty seats everywhere, but everytime I tried to sit down, someone would tell me that I couldn't sit there because the seats were saved. After searching for seats for 30-45 minutes, I just sat down in someone's "saved seats". They were really pissed off because they had been there since whatever time and blah blah blah. I didn't take their seats. I took the seats they were saving for their friends who were not there yet. They may have been there first, but I got there before their friends did.

I have been sitting in the student section since 2003 and have never tried to save seats for people who aren't there yet, especially for big games like the one yesterday. The people around us were call me and my friends names and such, but everyone in the student section was packed in, and they still had 2 rows of people standing in the walkways for the majority of the 1st half. So they would have been packed in tight even if we hadn't sat there!!

On girl sitting next to us was pouting the entire first half and even through halftime! Was I wrong for doing this?!? I just think it's absolutely absurd for people to do this!

Absolutely not. It irritates me as well, though it usually isn't a problem because I tend to sit where people don't exactly flock to. But it is irritating getting into the stands and seeing people trying to save an entire row of seats, and their friends don't even show up till a few minutes before the game starts. I would LOVE people to save me seats, so I could go to Tiger Walk, but I wait in line for an hour before the gates open and then wait two hours in the stadium before the game.

I'm fine with saving like one seat, but these people that save blocks of 5-10 seats are crazy.

I completely agree that the student section should be expanded. I'm pretty sure that it hasn't been expanded since before my freshman year. I am planning on emailing the SGA president on this issue and encourage others to join me. Here is his contact information.

Expand it, this has needed to be done for years, and go back to checking that the photo on the ID was the person using the ticket.

And with the way the student sections packs in now and gets bogged down in the aisles, noone should expect to save 10 or 15 seats that aren't part of the spirit points sections. Their friends should get there with them and should be well aware of the seating issues for students in the stadium.

I'm with you, AUTigerCourt. I also try my best not to take "saved" seats if I can help it, even though they aren't supposed to be doing that. But if I look all over and can't find some open seats, someone's about to be upset because it's simply not fair that people who want to drag ass and get there right before (or right after) kickoff get seats held for them in a general admission area while folks who get there on time and sit out in the heat are left with nothing.

Sorry, but them's the breaks.

It would also be good of Auburn to have extra security patrolling the section and making people pick up their placeholders and such and remind folks that you can't save seats. Let them be the bad guys, not you.

They were actually doing this in my line. Of course it didn't matter because they still let them in... the first person wouldn't let them in but someone else came over and let them.

There is no saving of seats in the student section. Period!

I get to the line at least three hours before kickoff to get my preferred seat. If someone is trying to save seats, just set down, ignore them, and look straight ahead. Don't make a scene about it, or you'll cause a commotion.

Example 1: Arkansas State. A girl was trying to save seats beside where I was sitting. She kept telling people she had friends coming. Well, 30 minutes before kickoff, still no friends! The section was already packed and people couldn't move in the aisles. Finally some guy tried to argue with her about them, made a big scene, and a deputy sheriff escorted him out of the stadium. He didn't do anything wrong and should have just set down. The friends never showed up either!

Example 2: Clemson. I was near the front of the line and got into the stadium right after the gates opened. I get to my preferred seats, and a girl is trying to save the entire row. My two friends and I sit down anyway. She pouts and complains. We just look straight ahead and say very little. Few minutes later, she leaves!

If you want to get a good seat, or any seat for that matter, get there early! I'm not going to save a seat for anyone, and I don't expect anyone to save one for me!

Yeah you may be talking about the section I was sitting next to. Some frat pledge was trying to save like 5 rows of seats and started belligerently confronting the group of about 7 people who sat on the edge of his supposed "saved seats". The fact that the frats even have a reserved section is a whole different rant for me to go on, but where this dude was trying to save 5 rows was in section 20 in the endzone, not even near their reserved section. Needless to say, this frat pledge got punched in the face by one of the people he was confronting, and while both involved rightly got escorted out by the cops, pretty much everyone in my section applauded both when the dude got punched in the face (he was acting like a true bammer), and when the cops came down after that to tell these clowns saving 5 rows that they couldn't do that.

Bottom line, nobody is more privileged than anybody else in the student section, so to expect that you can show up 10 minutes before kickoff so you can keep tailgating (aka getting drunk) and have seats saved for you won't fly. If you want seats, get there when everyone else does.

If you go back to checking the photo on the ID you end up with a much emptier student section. The vast majority of people buying student tickets are still students, they just didn't get that game.

I sit in the Nelson Club right above the student section. After the way the student section supported the team last night, I think the student section size should double. Don't worry about saved seats, support the team and graduate.

Get rid of "spirit point" sections. First come, first serve.

Problem solved.

I also agree with this.

The only group that should have reserved seats is the band.

AUTC, I completely agree with you on this issue. Perhaps using that new text messaging system the stadium has implemented would help. If security comes over wouldn't they tell them they can't save any seats? Just a thought. Tell the students that want to be at the game, get there on time or early or don't expect to sit down anywhere.

I hate it when people save seats. I hate it when people expect me to save them a seat.

If you want a seat that requires you to be early, then you need to be early yourself.

No you should take your seat. If you got there first it's yours imo.

What's the justification for the spirit seats anyway?

Officially, to get "groups" on campus to participate in parades, homecoming events..etc.

Unofficially, to aggravate the living crap out of those not in these groups.

I've dealt with this as well. I've even encountered a group of 5 pledges and their dates trying to save 7!!! entire rows in the upper portion of section 17. I purposely sit in the middle of their "saved seats" section and when other people trying to come in ask if I'm saving a few near me I'm quick to tell them to grab a seat and enjoy. Even though I don't agree, there is only 1 part of the student section that is "reserved" and the rest is first come first serve, and I have never had a problem letting the jerks know how I feel.

Oh and BTW, that group trying to save 7 rows...I squeezed them into a row and a half. They had nice things to say when their friends stumbled in 15 minutes before kickoff. :roflol:

Why would they expand the student section? They get in for dirt cheap compared to Alumni. I'm not saying it shouldn't be expanded, but I imagine their revenues would go down if they did.

Exactly why it hasn't been done, and more than likely won't.

The student section should stretch all the way across the South end zone.

I would rather they didn't; my family and I have sat next to the fence in Section 16 Rows 58 and 59 for 21 years now. I have a lot of memories there. :D

And I agree saving seats in the student section is goofy; why people even let their friends take advantage of them by forcing them to go early is beyond me. It is selfish of those who expect to come late; get your crap together and get there 2 hours early like you should.
