“It’s unacceptable. It wasn’t how we play defense at Auburn,” defensive coordinator Ted Roof said. “And we’re going to get it fixed.”

Chizik: "I thought it was a very poor defensive performance. That is not acceptable at Auburn."

Here's looking at you Ted Roof. Learn to defend the quick screen, please.

Chizik needs to coach the defense and let Roof go. I've been criticalof Roof for 2 years now, his defensive style is readily recognizable...poor. Thanks to Gus for pulling out another game. 42pts needed to beat Utah State??? Come on.

I agree 1,000%...even did a post on Roof's defense. Please check it out and chime in!

I still am shocked we won the game. We were whipped in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Our run blocking was pathetic. Our so called defense was pathetic.

I do not know why our coaching staff does not get on to these guys lowering their heads and diving at the feet of ball carriers.

Now that is out of the way. Special Teams was the only true bright spot out there today. Yeah, I Know we are young and we are going to make SOME mistakes but that was very difficult to stomach.

Trotter did "ok"? He did more than "ok", was one of the few bright spots of the afternoon, and took the team down the field twice under 3:00 for game winning drives. He was 17-of-23 for 261 yards and 3 TDs. How much more can you ask out of your quarterback... or hell, a quarterback starting his very first game?

I agree with many of these posts. I expected some rebuilding pains, but did not expect to get absolutely whipped in trenches on both sides of the ball. This was the biggest issue by far. Second biggest was absolutely horrid tackling.

Positives - kick returns, receivers made good catches and runs after the catch, and probably the biggest plus - Trotted showed a lot of poise and that will really help with confidence.

Biggest concern right now - if the O and D lines don't improve significantly MSU will have a field day with us.

Here's my take on the game & 2011 AU.

Offense - The inexperience and youth were clearly visible, especially on the LOS. The OL struggled at run blocking, but did pretty well pass blocking. I saw many missed blocks/assignments. AU has a good passing game that will greatly improve over the year. Trotter is poised and confident in the pocket throwing to Blake, Stallworth, Lutz, et. al. Other WRs will get worked into the mix. I really wished CGM would have let Trotter loose earlier in the game with the passing game to open up the running lanes.

Defense - it seemed to me that with ONE senior on the field (Thorpe) that Roof kept the D very simple, not very many blitz packages or stunts until the 4th, i.e. Nosa dropping into coverage on one play. I think this is a mistake, if they are going get torched let them do it going all out. They seemed to thrive more by applying pressure than sitting back. I think Freeman's presence, will help from a leadership standpoint, not to mention his talent. DEs can pass rush! The entire DL got pushed around in the running game. Lots of bad angles and missed tackles, that can be corrected and taught, but guys like Bates has no excuse doing it.

Special Teams - A+, we've got threats in the return game with Mason, Bray, and Reed. If Parkey continues to kickoff like he did today I would be fine to never see a team return a kickoff against all year. Clark was solid averaging 43.5 yards per punt.
