I'm open to changes at defensive coordinator, but the offense shares an awful lot of blame today. Trotter seemingly can't or won't read the defensive end on the option read and keep the ball. Stupid penalties by senior offensive linemen hurting drives. Erratic throws when receivers are open. Turnovers in the redzone. Scoring only a FG since the early 2nd quarter. That cannot happen unless you have an outstanding defense. Even an ok defense will lose a game with that kind farting around.

Every week our offensse has to play perfect because our defense is so horrible. The offense has a few get out jail cards banked... 24 pts on the road should be enough to win, yet we are 14pts down. 600+ yds given up and it's the offense's share of the blame???

Yeah. You can't go almost 3 quarters without scoring and when you have a chance to cut it to seven with 9 minutes in the fourth, have a stupid false start by a senior followed up by an interception. The offense didn't have to play perfect, but it could not go into a cocoon for 3/4th of the game either. I'm not saying it's an equal share or that they haven't earned a mulligan once in a while. But they do shoulder some of the blame for how this game turned out. Momentum matters and when you have chances to take the momentum back and you fritter it away with bad throws, bad reads, missed blocks, turnovers and dumb penalties, bad stuff happens.

TONY FRANKLIN HIS BUTT AND GET HIM OUT NOW! His coaching ability sucks. Chizik is starting to make me doubt him since he hasnt tried to take over. Roof has had 2 good games and that was the Championship game and the BCS game. Ironbowl was a nice comeback but he sucked for almost 3 quarters. Im sick and tired of this. If we're going to give up this many points no matter what, maybe we need someone who is willing to slow down some when we need it too

He won't be fired in the middle of the year. That would be worse than keeping him.

Exactly. He's got the balance of the season to get these youngsters to show significant improvement. But I'd be looking at some resumes now. Our defense did just enough at critical moments last season, but we're just not getting better. Not to mention our offense was practically unstoppable. Our offense is still very good (but had a bad day today), but not good enough for a defense to give up a billion yards.

How much worse could it get??? 700yds per game? 50 pts per game. Chizik can coach the defense. Roof has to go. He has had plenty of time to correct his deficencies. Our defensive unit looks worse than against Utah State...

I don't know if you guys understand, but firing Roof will make no difference unless Chizik himself changes the way HE wants to play defense. This is Roof running Chizik's scheme, this is CHIZIK'S defense.

Yes take him out mid season. we wont do any worse. Chizik was a good D coord. Let him take over and find someone who can do something with them. They've been coached down since he got here. This is a lesson to everyone dont take a D coord from a crappy school known only for basketball and lecross

No, that's a recipe for disaster morale wise. It shows panic and disarray. You wait until the end of the year and then make whatever decision is appropriate.

So, what DO you do? Give up 600 yards per game for the rest of the season? This wouldn't be a morale hit to the team?

This is not our year. Because of that, we have to prepare for the long term. Firing a coach midseason would make Auburn seem unstable. An end of season change can be taken in stride. Planning for 2012-2013 comes before trying to eek out an extra win or two this year.

No, you make improvements. The defense last year improved as the year went on, playing it's best three games against Alabama, South Carolina and Oregon to end the year. This team needs to show improvement as well but you don't fire a guy three games into the season unless you want the entire chemistry of the team to fall apart.

Agree that we have to maintain continuity, but I don't recall ever even hearing of a team, at any level, convering 12 of their last 13 third downs - and the one don't convert, the ball hits our (clueless) DB in the back. Don't care how you slice it, that's bad. Really, really bad.

The defense has shown no improvement, indeed they have seemed to regress.

Actually, they played better overall against MSU than Utah State. They took a big step back today. Unfortunately it was on a day where the offense left the stadium after the early 2nd qtr.

So, how difficult is it to transition from coaching one style of defense to effectively coaching another? I ask this in relation to what Roof has had to do under Chizik. Is it really difficult and are we placing too much blame only on Roof, or should it be a simple enough transition for someone coaching at that level and all the blame is justified?

Also, who spends the majority of the time teaching our boys how to tackle properly? Is it Roof? Is it their position coaches? Same with defending a pass. Our idea of defending a pass (if we are lucky and are close enough to defend it) is to either A)let them catch it and try to drag them down or B)never turn around to the ball when we recognize a receiver is recognizing it and instead throw our hands up and lean into the receiver and get a pass interferance call.

Who's teaching our boys poor technique and when does Chizik (the defensive guru) step in and say it's unacceptable?

21-7 the game should be over...

We could realign our defensive goals for this season. We are close to being last in every defensive catagory. With Roof on the job that goal is well withing our reach!!! WDE

Not when it's 21-7 with 9 minutes left in the 2nd quarter. Not against decent BCS level teams on the road. Momentum matters. Sorry.

The crowd is out of the game, down by 2 tds...momentum was on our side until our defense threw up on itself again. It remains to be seen whether Clemson is a decent BCS team, we sure made them look like the NE Patriots...

They aren't the Patriots, but they're decent. But I don't think anyone can reasonably expect for one's offense to stop scoring with 9 minutes left in the 1st half, only up by 14 against a team like Clemson and think the game should be over. Way too much time left in the game for that to be the expectation.

I'm not against being critical of how they played, but that's not a reasonable argument.
