This song is one I didn't know that Merle did until yesterday when I heard it on the satellite radio. Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings also had versions of it.

For great artists there's so much more than just the hit songs you hear on the radio. With the passing of Merle Haggard this is on display more than ever. At the peak of his stardom, he took time to pay tribute to those who went before him. He honored people like Bob Wills and Jimmy Newman. He was a prolific songwriter, writing new music right up to the time of his death. He told someone he had enough music sitting in the vault to make 20 albums.

It seems about every 20 years or so we go through this. The music gets to sounding more like pop, then it reverts back again.I posted some stuff from the new album, Southern Family the other day.....This gentleman is the producer of it. The article also touches on the two lanes of music in what people see as country. The country pop lane and the more roots and Americana lane.
Not only is it not all turning into Taylor Swift land, it is better than ever for Americana/roots and is selling more than it ever has.
Stapleton, Isbell, Simpson, East, Jamey Johnson. Just some examples....He is doing it at one of the most historic studios in Nashville.

While it's not mainstream, I have an affinity for cajun music. This man was a legend in Louisiana. His granddaughter is following in his footsteps.

Man had a great career. Maybe not the greatest musician ever but he put out some pretty good stuff. Sadly he will be gone soon I think. His health is deteriorating.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned Bob Seger yet. One of my favorites to be sure.

One man who I respect and listen to for country music knowledge is Mr. Eddie Stubbs on WSM. He is a walking encyclopedia on that genre. His way back Wednesday show will have stuff from back in the 30's on occasion. Very often goes back to the 40's
