No, his school would not allow him to use the Video Board for the announcement tonight so he went ahead with this.

That stinks, but this is in Georgia, so I presume that school is run by UGA fans.  Still stinks they won't let him announce that way.  That would be a nice moment for the kid.  Well, hopefully AU can make up for it by helping him have many nice moments in the friendly confines of a slightly bigger and louder stadium down the road in the Loveliest Village....   Welcome big man!!

This is only KB's second year as an OC. I doubt most quality programs thnk he has enough experience yet. I know what Bird has posted but my bigger concern is Art finding a job & KB following him.

Hadn't even thought of Art as a viable coach given what transpired, but I guess if Petrino can get back into the driver's seat, Art likely will too at some point.  I just don't know if enough time will have gone by when teams will begin looking for that next hire for next season.  He still has an awful lot of "stink" on him right now.

Changing our name to stat&opiniontiger? That's cool, just don't hold yourself out as an "only the facts" poster if you're adding opinion without objective backup like how much alternating underachieving QBs "disrupts" the offense. You have no idea if that made bad execution worse or mitigated by variety what would otherwise have been a 4 interception night for a trio of tanking QBs. I got yer stat&opinion right here: unranked AU plays poorly on Oline & O execution in general but still loses to #2 by only 6 pts, throwing into the end zone to attempt the win as time expired.

That's another "almost" victory for AU.  How many of those does AU have in the last few years?  Gus doesn't get paid for moral victories (which he seems to be pointing to (see his comments after the Bama game last year where he said "AU shoulda hung 60 on them".)  The Wouldacouldashoulda is all fine and good, but bottom line, he's in charge of this team, and firmly in charge of the personnel decisions, and there is plenty of analysis outside of here that seem to agree with Stat's assertion with regard to the goofy QB rotation Saturday night.  And judging from the boo's in the crowd which were evident on TV as a certain QB kept coming into the game, many AU fans agree with this assertion as well.

Even former AU players were questioning it.  (See Ben Leard and Takeo Spikes twitter feeds during the game).  Popular analysts around the football universe were eviscerating Gus during the game.  It's easy to find, I've just given a sample of opinions from a quick google search.

  4. So being relatively new here, is it not ok to criticize Gus (within reason) here after that unbelievable mess last night?

As bad as it was, to be within one batted pass from tying it up is almost inconceivable.  Kudos to Dabo for making one of the most questionable calls of the night  last night on that field by not icing the game with a chip shot field goal at the end to put it out of reach.  Can u imagine the headlines today if AU came down with that ball in the endzone after the offensive presentation we witnessed coming from AU?  Dabo would have taken a HUGE hit with such a loss.

So is Kam Martin going to be a regular, between the tackles RB at 170 something and with his speed, or is he gonna be O-Mac?

Also, Malik Miller looked great in the spring game until his injury, but I notice he isn't listed on that depth chart.  Anyone know what the story is with him?

Hopefully they're going to give Miller a little time to watch and learn and ease him into this thing.  Barring injury, I think Miller's just further down the "go to" chart.  Unless Gus promised him the first carry in the Clemson game like he did for Roc in the Bama game.  (Shudder)

Kam has to be OMac-like.  No way he can survive going through the tackles at that size.

I think SW definitely can handle being under pressure. I don't want anyone getting the idea that I am saying, he can't. I think SW can be an NFL QB as well. It is just my opinion that he will be much more like Brandon Allen, who BTW, was one of the most efficient QBs in the SEC last year, if not the most.

Sorry guys, one more vid. Just a reference for the viewers.

If he can give AU Brandon Allen production, AU will be ok then.  After watching most of the 16 minute SW video you posted above, I actually feel a little better about SW should he get the nod.  I had forgotten how many drops there were.  I think my memory is also tainted more by his post injury performances where he was hopping around on one leg.  Dude can move the ball down the field.  Hopefully he can go a little more vertical this year, but the receivers did a pretty good job of getting 5-8 yards a clip (at least in the first 10 minutes of the video).  That's not awful.  I'm stepping back from the ledge.  For now.

Why name a starting QB if you don't have to? If I were the head coach (which thank God I'm not, I'm not qualified to be), I wouldn't name one until they trotted out for the first snap. Naming a starter publicly does nothing but narrow down the number of things the opponent's defense has to prepare for. Privately, it can help a team rally around one guy, but that announcement can be done privately, it doesn't have to be public.

Oh yeah, I agree with that line of thinking.  I just found his statement chuckleworthy as everybody is waiting to hear definitively and he's not ending the "suspense", whether it be for the reason you noted, or if it's because he really doesn't know WHO it's gonna be.

I'm firmly in the camp that they share too much as it is.  I don't know if all coaches spend as much time with the media as Gus does (I presume they're required to), but sometimes I just wish he's stop yapping and spend more time game planning and ensuring he's got his team ready to rock.  I'd rather Clemson (and the other future opponents) have to game plan for different styles to defend than give them a hint of who it's gonna be.

  8. This quote from Gus made me chuckle.

Malzahn on QB: "I'm not ready to name a starter right now. Possibly in the near future."

Thanks for the clarity of "possibly in the near future", Gus!

"We may or may not have a qb, possibly or possibly not. Or we just may not ever name a qb and go to battle without one. Allegedly."

i can almost hear the TV commentators for the Clemson game....

"....and the ball is snapped to...:no one.....it's on the ground and, not surprisingly it's another turnover.  That makes 17 straight possessions they have done that. Jesse, I gotta tell you, this offense may work better with a qb back there to take the snap....."

  9. Well, whoever gets the job isn't assured they'll keep it so I'm not really sure how big of a deal it is if he names someone the starter this week or next week.  If they stink up the joint, they won't remain as starter.  It truly stinks that (as far as WE know) nobody is really standing apart yet.  I suspect this is going to be an ongoing week to week question ("who will be starting against your opponent this week?") to be answered late each week.  Me no likey.  I need an aspirin.  And a beer.  Lots and lots of beer, hold the aspirin.

One other quote I found very interesting and may have tipped his hand: "We've always had a Wildcat type guy and we've always had a starter."  This is from the same press conference.  This comes across to me JFIII is not the starter, but then again all I can do is speculate.

Wouldn't that seem to point more to JFIII though?  (I always kinda viewed the wildcat qb as more of a runner/read option type - either hand the ball off the the RB, take off running and mix in a little throwing here and there - he can supposedly throw the deep ball fairly well.)

  11. 14 hours ago, WFE12 said:

At first like many others I thought that jfIII would be the man. Now it's up in the air....all we need is above average qb play...all three SHOULD display but :dunno: we'll see

I'm sorry but your video of Gus and the maracas is very funny.  The frantic intensity is mesmerizing.

I heard that Gus only wanted to get information on Sean and JF3. Am I making this stuff up?

No, just thought you were potentially hinting at another problem beyond the hand injury that was mentioned.  Forgot that he mentioned wanting to focus on Sean/JF3.
