Ted Roof is...

A very good game time coach. Looking back at all of our games, first half v/s second half he makes the adjustments necessary to put AU in the best position to win. Regardless of the talent on the field.

AL.com

"Defensive coordinator Ted Roof said Ole Miss surprised the Tigers with their offensive approach.

"They pretty much scrapped their conventional offense and went to a Wildcat game,'' Roof said.

Auburn figured it out it in the middle of the game, holding the Rebels to three points in the second and third quarters."

I'm glad we make good adjustments but I am not happy with the job he has done. I know based on previous post that after saying I don't like the job he does I'm going to get hit with the we are 9-0 comments but many of the problems we have on defense are scheme oriented not talent. Our blitz packages are horrible at best. But that is just my opinion! War Eagle!!

Do we have to keep having this same discussion week in and week out? Defense is down all over the league. I thinking its less a Roof problem and more of a wide spread thing.

Ginger has been replaced by AJ McCarron and the OC (McElvain(sp)), has been fired.  Richt has been fired, along with Rich Rod, Urban Meyer, Les Miles, and Mike Kelly.

As much as some hate to admit it, the problem is personnel. If the problem were Roof, don't you think CGC knows as almost as much about defense as people who post on message boards? Why would one assume that coach chizic all the sudden forgot how to coach defense?

Sounds like Roof has always got an excuse as to why his D doesn't perform. Don't like that.  :-\

There's a difference between an excuse and a reason. Considering that he was right in that they figured it out and shut them down (same thing happened as the game wore on with Arkansas, if you remember, except it took him a quarter to adjust to the freshman QB). I'm not saying Roof is perfect, I'm just saying that I think he's doing a pretty good job.

Yes rockford he does know how to coach d and if you have been paying attention he is spending more and more time each week with CTR. We all know we need better players at Linebacker and in the Sec. but his schemes are not very good. Tell me how it is that the DC at AU is surprised by OM running the Wildcat? Only every team in the country runs it now, Just saying?

I have to admit, the long TD run in the first quarter not withstanding, we were pretty effective defensively against a pretty good offense Saturday.  I was concerned about Massoli's ability to hurt us since Jefferson had some success running against us in the LSU game.  We did a good job of controlling that.  UGA still worries me.  Their qb can chunk it.  If he avoids the picks against us, he's probably going to have a big day.  In our favor is the fact that they have not played well defensively so far.  It will probably be another track meet game.

I agree somewhat because I noticed after a few injuries of some our starters that the younger guys actually played better as in they knew how to turn around and look for the ball and tackle.  I can't help but wonder if the latter is from their High School coaching when they were taught proper techniques  :dunno:

Just my opinion, but Roof needs more bodies. We have many quality athletes on defense, but we need several more. Our master recruiters have and will continue to take care of this. There are many bright days ahead for those of us loyal to the orange and blue!

I was very wary of Roof last year but I will agree that he has shown that he can make pretty good adjustments at halftime that give us the best shot at winning and I have been very pleased with that this year.  My one remaining concern is that we never seem to start out strong which to me indicates that he still has some issues with initial game planing.  If we were having issues with even just half of our games during the first half I could write it off but with the exception of the two scrubs and Ole Miss, we really haven't seemed to come out from the start with an effected defensive game plan.  At least not from my perspective.  If anyone disagrees with this I am very open to hearing support for an opposing viewpoint.

Ted Roof is an experienced and respected defensive coach who has had success everywhere he has coached. He works for one of the best defensive minds in the country. I am confident that the two of them have everything under control as best they can with the hand they were dealt. If anybody on this board thinks they know better how to coach the Auburn defense than Roof and Chizik they shoul formally apply for the job. I am sure the positive results would be immediate. Some people get a bowl of peach ice cream and complain because they think strawberry would have been a better choice.

I actually see it as more likely that the veterans are going on what they learned first in college, while the new guys are following what they've been coached to do by Roof, Thigpen, and Lolley.

Eight or nine games into the season and the youngsters are no longer youngsters and have picked up the proper techniques, schemes, etc.  They are a talented group of youngsters but they have to get the game experience which they are getting now because they understand the defense.  You can't fix a lack of depth on defense in one year.  I am not a stats guy but I see a better defense this year than last and think that we will be better next year than this year with another solid recruit list on defense.

I'm sorry but these posts do get to me a bit.  I understand where you're coming from and that we don't need to bash any coaches or players but no one has done any bashing in this thread.  Do you honestly think that when the coaches are talking to players they only praise them for the good things they do and refuse to discuss the mistakes that are made out of fear of hurting someone's feeling???? The only way people learn is to see the mistakes that they have made and address them.  Now granted, we are not on the staff and I doubt that the staff is reading any of these posts but it still doesn't mean that we as fans can not analyze the performance of our players and staff in a rational and respectful manner in an attempt to figure out what areas we should be looking for improvement in.
