Tom, I've had an HDTV for about 6 months now and it IS worth the money. Watching AU thrash UT on HD was nirvana. HD colors are so vibrant and it also gives a 3 dimensional effect. I would also point out that watching an HDTV in a store like BB is good, but not nearly as good as when you get an HDTV at home, in proper lighting and calibrating the set.

What do we know about the longevity of an HD TV? LCD? Plasma?

They are still expensive, and I would not want to buy one that would fuzz out in 5 years. Any info?

I love my HDTV - Best Buy is probably doing a 2 years no interest deal right now anyway with some other insentives.

Just make sure you have HD servcie available in your area and that there are enough channels to make it worth it to you.

LCD should be stable. LCD monitors have been out for nearly 10 years. Plasma however is still a new and untested technology. I do know that an LCD screen can go about 5 times longer before needing servive. You only get about 30,000 viewing hours out of a plasma before it will need calibration and service. Most LCD screens will give you 100,000 + hours before needing to be recalibrated. Plasma does have a brighter picture and also has a larger viewing angle. LCD you are limited to Active matrix TFT and will get about a 140 degree viewing angle. Plasma you get about a 170 viewing angle with no loss in contrast or brightness

A friend of mine is a design engineer for a large TV company and advised me to stay away from plasma, as they begin to burn out in 5-7 years on average. If you can afford that kind of $$$ for 5-7 years of usage I would say go for it as the picture is awesome. I just plan on using my TV alot longer than that.

Projection technology has come a long way in the last few years, and I know mine has a much better picture, even from angles, than I would have ever thought possible with projection. Plus it's alot cheaper.
