Coach Dye seems optimistic

The lions roar

I believe I recall Coach Dye warning fans to lower expectations before the 2011 season due to our young, inexperienced team. It sounds like he liked what he saw this spring.

Let's hope he's as right as he was this past year. :we:

Amen. I wonder how many practices he witnessed this spring. It was impossible for me to tell anything from the spring game with the coaches determined not to show anything to rival coaches. Even if he watched only one practice I would value his opinion.

I think he's spot on from what I've heard.

My translation: We may not see the improvement in the form of W's this season but this team will be better. That's all we need focus on, imo. Then the w's will come.

He said we'll be better this year and he said the schedule, while tough, shouldn't be as rough as last season. How does that translate to not getting any more wins?

I just read it as his tempering expectations with the mention of the scheduled teams being better this year too.

I won't be disappointed if we don't get more wins this year because we have such little game experience. Solid recruiting classes and better play don't aways mean more wins. Improvement is all I'm looking for. I thought we did about as well as we could with what we had last year. I think we are on the verge of being able to win the west but it's a tall order for this year.

^^Agreed! So tired of the mindset from a (small) group of fans that "we should set our standards for 'improvement'" and not for one or two more wins. I was just as angry at those blowout losses last year as the next guy, but for the most part, that's what improvement is--a higher number of wins! I like exCPD's view and while I think we'll take our lumps at times this year, our improvement WILL show up in our record! Maybe by just one or two games, but our chances of a better record are VERY good!

Well, we can agree to disagree, but so little game experience? We don't have many seasoned vets, though they are scattered throughout (Blake, Lutz, OMac, McNeal, Bates...all started on the NC team), but we return a total of 18 starters. That's more than just a little game experience.

First, when Dye speaks, I listen. I'm not sure there is a better person to listen to their opinion when it comes to our team. It's only spring and a lot will happen between now and Clemson. August will be critical for this team to develope. With a young team there are so many things that will need to fall into place during 2 a days - starting O-line rotation being solidified and learning to play together, consistency and development in the D-line with some key players missing time in spring training in a new defense, the rb and qb situation being set, even the WR rotation. This team has so many roles that are still not settled not to mention learning to play as a unit.

My honest expectation next year is a much better team, especially as the year goes on. We did not really improve as a team last year as the year went on although individual performances improved in places and experience was gained. That said, I am not sure that translates into a lot more wins. 1 more win or 2 is most likely IMO, however this team has a lot more potential than last year. We need the Clemson game to get off on the right foot and it is winnable, but a fairly even matchup. Most of all, I expect us to be competitive in every game, unlike last year. Should be fun.

Maybe I lack the needed critical thinking ability to see where Caoch Dye said anything about how many games he expected Auburn to win this fall, nevertheless, I didn't. Ive been watching Auburn football for over 40 years and have no more idea about what to expect in that regard than the next homer does. Im not convinced being better translates to more wins in the SEC but it definitely could. Auburn has a relatively consistent track record of disappointing when expectations are too high. From my point of view, I'll be very pleased if they can simply eliminate the 4TD beatdowns and be competitive in every game.

I long for the day when all Auburn fans actually get rid of the "little sister" attitude and start believing that we should win the National Championship every year. Auburn is an ELITE school and belongs in the talk with the other elite schools.

No team should win the national championship every year. National championships happen when everything falls into place on occasions that do not occur very often. Since you used "little sister", I will go out on a limb and say that has something to do with the turd poorly thought out attempt at an insult. Well, just because the turds are dumb does not mean we should stoop to their level with trying to prop up our ego with delusion. Here is an informed opinion - Bama has 8 legit titles in over 100 years of football. We have 4 or 5. Saying we should win the national championship every year is just a way to try to ease insecurities like the other team in the state did when they claimed 6 fake titles in the 1980's.

And everyone here knows AU is an elite college football program. That is obvious to anyone that follows college football.

Ok. Go tell our coaching staff that they shouldn't expect to win it all every year. I will listen for the laughter all the way from Auburn when they boot you out of the athletic complex.

If Pat Fain Dye is encouraged about this year's team, we can all be assured that we will be much improved from last year. Coach Dye is known to be pretty conservative with his estimates and evaluations.

I respect all of my Auburn brothers and sisters and their opinions, but some just amaze me. It is all about expectations and expecting those expectations to be met. For us to have more SECCs & NCs our fan base as whole need to expect them and demand results. We don't have to compromise the Creed and what Auburn is all about in the process.

War Eagle !

I agree wholeheartedly. I think this is a much better team than last year, yet it might not translate into no more than a win or two. My guess is 9-3 if we beat Clemson and 8-4 this season if we lose that first game. That first game will set the tone for the rest of the schedule; at least the first part of the season where we play Clemson, Mississippi St., Arkansas and LSU. Also, I think we'll be competing for an SEC title in '13 and we'll win it (BCS) all in '14.

Any fan that expected us to compete for a NC or SECC last year was delusional.  Have your expectations, but make sure they are grounded in facts and reality.

Yeah, I don't like the way it sounds to demand results. I understand the line of thought, and I like the spirit of it, but defining the results demanded is a difficult task. BB is right: expecting a championship in a rebuilding season like last year is absurd. Have to be careful that you don't start defining yourself by your championships; that's how you end up with a fan base that puts away its school colors once the year goes in the tank.
