WAREAGLE!!! (from an outsider looking in)

First post. maybe this is the wrong area for this but...

I have been a member for awhile now and have been reading posts and all.  The posts are fun to read and really get a person fired-up and excited about the up-coming season.  I grew-up as an AUBURN fan, thanks to my Dad, and have always yelled for the orange and blue win or lose...  I have only been to one Auburn football game and that was when Tubs first started coaching at Auburn.

Anyway,  eventhough I grew up as an Auburn fan, I did not attend college at or take any courses at Auburn.  Dad was not an Auburn grad either. As a matter of fact  he grew up as a turd fan but his turd friends kept talking -down and making fun of Auburn and he decided he would pull for and be an Auburn Fan.. Win or lose he never waivered and switched back to the turd side.  As a matter of fact, He cheered for any team that played against the turds.  I guess I really wanted to see how Auburn Grads(Fans) really felt about people that call themseves fans of Auburn but never attended the college at Auburn...

Just to make a few Early prediction.. Auburn Beats Turdville this year by 14, LSWHO 10, Clemson 14, MS.ST 12,

I have no problem with it. I was one of those fans until I decided to give grad school a chance. Also, welcome to AE!!

As for your predictions..... I hope you are right. War Eagle!!! and Post often!

Welcome. I will answer your question about "sidewalk alum" --the often used description, by saying that without them, our university would be much worse off, imo. They spend a LOT of money for the benefit of the University. I believe that we have had trustees that fit into this category but am not 100% certain on that.

If Auburn depended only upon graduates and/or alum to fill up the seats at sporting events, I dare say it would avg 50-60%--which would probably beat most schools avg.

So, I don't know what the consensus on this will be but I'm saying that it's a great thing. The Auburn spirit carries beyond the city limits sign and there are people who never went to school in Auburn who are now Auburn people.

I know exactly where you're coming from as I never attended AU either.  Heck I don't even know anyone who's attended AU.  Just decided that it was the school I wanted to pull for.  I don't think most people have an issue with someone liking a team just b/c, however there are bound to be a select few that feel you can't be a true fan unless you went to school there.

The way I see it it's not much different than pro sports, how many of us as Braves fans can say we played for the Braves? Very very few lol, all that being said I personally don't think it matters how or why one becomes a fan.  Just be one through good and bad.

:we:

I understand where your coming from.  I am a huge Auburn fan even though I didn't attend the school. I am also a Packers fan and I didn't play for them.

I am also a military veteran and I don't have a problem with people being patriotic even if they didn't serve in the military. Sarcasm off

I think the idea of having to be an alum in order to be a true fan is a total farce.  A true fan supports their team in good and bad times, that is the only requirement.

That last statement is the key. Didn't attend AU but not because I didn't want to. The key to being a fan is what you do when things aren't going well. Anyone can be a fan when we go 14-0. It is when we struggle you find out who the true fans are. Look forward to the season and if we play like we are capable of, I see no one we can't beat. So let's go do it.War Eagle!!

Actually attending Auburn is one of the many ways to become part of the family, not the only way. Anyone to say otherwise is just being snooty and close minded. There is a difference between fans that didn't attend the school and band wagon fans. Fortunately for us, turd town picks up the band wagon fans for the most part. As a fellow new member, welcome and War Eagle! Love those favorable predictions. I think starting the season out 2-0 would be a huge catalyst towards making a run at the west this year.

^^This X2^^  I did grad from AU in '04, but that doesn't make me any bigger fan than anyone else.  That's why we're all called fans not alums.  Win or lose, AU will always be #1 IMO.  Welcome aboard and hope to hear from you often.  War Eagle!

I am an alum of Auburn but I graduated from Troy University. I have allegiance to both schools but I've spent much more of my life being a "fan" of Auburn. The bigges difference that I perceive between "sidewalk" alum and people that went to a school are more likely fans of the school instead of just a team. Like Coach Dye said, Alabama people love Alabama football. Auburn people love Auburn. It was something along those lines. Most alum love the school and not just a team. Can be said of some fans too though.

Being a "sidewalk alum" is not a problem. Constantly berating your neighbor as inferior because you went to Wal-Mart and bought a t-shirt is. This is where the stigma for all of the bammer sidewalk alums came from. They don't know much about the program outside of the national championships, may or may not have ever set foot in Tuscaloosa, and may or may not have bowed down at the statue of Bear if they did set foot in town. Ask them to sing the fight song and they literally get the first word wrong, if they even remember which song is actually the fight song. They think Nick Saban is a god and taunt Auburn fans about wanting him but can't have him.

No, that doesn't describe every Alabama fan lacking in actual ties to UAT. However, it does describe a large majority of such Alabama fans. Thus their reputation.

Liking Auburn is never a bad thing, regardless of the circumstances. Kinda hard not to if you ask me.

Took the words out of my mouth (or off my keyboard?).

You are not an "outsider."  You are a member of the Auburn family.

The problem is not so-called "sidewalk fans."  It's a certain school's "sidewalk fans" being a bunch of (insert plural noun that would get this deleted).

Just my opinion.....What makes somebody a member of the Auburn Family is that you love Auburn University. Nothing more, nothing less. It doesn't matter if you went to Auburn, or have never even been in Auburn. A "sidewalk fan", IMO, is one of these fans who fly their flags and wear their colors when things are going well. When times are hard they put their stuff up. They are also called "fair weather fans". Anybody who stands behind Auburn, in thick and thin, is a member of our Family IMO.

If your not a graduate or student you can NOT be a fan...find another team

Just joking, wear the orange and blue with pride! ....believe in Auburn and love it.

If the only ppl who were allowed to be fans of a college football fteam were the ones who attended/graduated from the university....it would be a lonely stadium come saturdays in the fall. (See UAB football for example.)

some good comments here! like a poster said earlier most of us would have loved to have gotten an auburn education, but it wasnt practicle for my situation at the time. i think the creed mentions a practicle world. some alums do talk down about us sidewalkers and that is dissappointing.

If you faced the ridicule, fiery darts, and idiotic comments about being a second class citizen in this state because of your love for all things Auburn, and never waivered or felt ashamed of being a fan of Auburn, you are as much or MORE an Auburn man or woman than someone who graduated from Auburn. Period.

To be a fan of auburn requires a connection. Rooting with your dad, attending a game, or attending AU all create that connection. At Alabama (or any of the larger state schools) it requires nothing. You can latch on because all you care about is the football team (and when they suck you brag about women's gymnastics etc) and that's what most of the other fans care about so they are all leeches (sticking with latching on visual) Auburn people, grad or otherwise care about the special city that is auburn, the campus that is auburn university, the others who make up the auburn family. They don't take pride in just football championships but also being ranked as one of the top 50 best cities in America, a top university, home of the second most national merit scholars, abd in the last two years a rhodes scholar, Oscar winner, Pulitzer prize winner, and hiesman winner. (talking about AU like this makes me willing to run through a wall, I should calm down) war eagle
