They did that with Smith but Smith had just left Arkansas so he came back as a caretaker/coach.  I grant you that Weber State is long ways away and they won't have to constantly hear about it from them, but I think their biggest concern was to keep intact what they have for this season and make a run for a championship with what they have.  They have been coming close and can taste it.  Heck, they had a good shot at it this year if Petrino had not screwed up.

As noted...probably holding the slot for someone else....will give him a chance to see what he can do with an excellent QB and a pretty solid team.  He might win the job long term but my expectation is that by this time next year, Arky has a new coach with a long term deal.  Meanwhile, I guess he will keep all of Petrino's assistants?
