Fullbacks

Actually UP to one true fullback.  Eric Smith was probably the last "nearly true" FB but it's not a position we have tried to fill in recent years.  You ask a good question.  Will this now be a slot that we recruit for...or will some guard or LB make a position change?

:dunno:

True fullbacks are not that common coming out of high school.  Many high school offenses have gone to the spread.  There are some who still run the single wing, pro set and the I formation who will use a fullback type position.  We will, with Coach Loeffler's offense, recruit fullbacks.  It could turn in to a situation where tight ends, H backs and fullbacks being recruited to fill the position, though.  Even small, quick guards could play the position.

I think we'll take one, but it will be a low-star, under the radar type just as Jay Proesch(sp) was .  I did see a name on the board last week but don't remember his name.  I'll look it up, but my failing memory seems to recall that he's a local (State of Alabama) kid.  I think we'll see that FB will become a big piece of our offensive puzzle next year.

I expect FBs are hard to identify in HS....most kids with the physical tools are probably playing in the line...guards or possibly linebacker.  Mostly they need to be solid, tough and have reasonable speed...with an emphasis on tough.  I remember Brandon Johnson from some years ago....worked on fishing boats off season and was hard as hickory nut.

No doubt the coaches will be looking for the right guys for that postion but most likely they will not be playing that positon in HS....Prosch probably is the prototype HS player and lots of credit to Zook and Illinois for identifying that attribute right away.

I think undersized guards and right-size linebackers are the pool good FBs will come from.
