Phish coming to the Ham!

My absolute favorite band, Phish, is FINALLY gonna be in my backyard! They are playing Oak Mountain Amphitheater Aug. 27 (Friday) 7:30 pm. Tickets went on sale this morning. Yes mine are already purchased. I'm curious if any others on here might plan on making the show. I've travelled to Miami, Charlotte, Manchester TN (Bonnaroo), and Alpharetta GA (closest they've been) to see them. This is probably the only time I'll ever get the opportunity to go see them, then hop in my truck and RIDE home to my bed. If you're remotely a phan, I suggest you take this opportunity up as well. I promise it will be one of if not the best performances you'll ever see live.

Tickets are on sell through livenation.com

$45.00 G/A Lawn

$60.00 Reserved pavillion seating

I am in NO WAY promoting or affiliated with the band or venue. Just a HUGE phan passing along info. Sorry for rambling, just really excited! Would love to meet some of you there.

War Eagle,

Most oftenly compared to the Grateful Dead due to rotating setlist, similar fans, live improvisational music, etc.

However, they do not sound like the Dead.  To me, anyway--others who aren't very familiar with either band would probably just say it all sounds the same.

can't say as I am familiar with them. What sort of stuff do they play?"

Hard to describe because they don't really sound like any other bands. Mostly a jazz-infused blues/psychedelic rock sound with the occasional blue grass and ska/reggae beats. Many times each member will be doing his own thing, yet somehow it all works in unison.  Your prototypical jam band. Trey Anastasio is one of the greatest guitarists to date. Mike Gordon a well one of the best bassists. Page McConnell on keys and fantastic vocalist (though Trey is "lead". And then there's John Fishman (where the bands name comes from) on percussion. Very quirky guy who sometimes plays the vacuum.

And no not everyone at these shows are smelly hippies. Actually maybe 5% of everyone there. They're mostly found at the festivals where you camp for 3-4 days.

Last show I was able to catch was ZEPP Hall, Tokyo, 2000. Small club -  1500 general admission tickets / no seats, dancing room only.

As to what kind of music they play, well... like Icculus and WDEAUB said it's kinda hard to describe. Kind of like trying to compare Pink Floyd or the Smiths to any oother band.

What kind of music don't they play might be easier to answer. They play anything and everything from gospel to jazz to rock to funk to classical to bluegrass, sometimes all mashed together in the same song. I can't think of another band with as much pure musical talent, training and ability and different musical influences / backgrounds than Phish. Every Halloween they do (or did, not sure about now) a complete cover show of a single album - they did the Beatles White Album one year.

IMHO, I think the Dead comparison is dated and not very applicable. After Jerry Garcia died and the Dead no longer toured, Dead heads found a "New Dead" to follow in Phish, though musical styles between the bands differed considerably (even moreso now). However, the live shows and styles (theatrics / space / extemporaneous jams) of both were simply awesome and the groovy, "it's all cool, man!" atmosphere pre-, during and post-concert made for a very enjoyable experience. As far as thoroughly enjoyable shows I have been to only Dave Matthews and Steely Dan (and the Dead) come close.

Enjoy! Envious!

Since moving to Japan in '93 my music basically fossilized, a few bands I like about as much as Phish:

Blues Traveler, Widespread Panic, Dave Mathews, REM, U2, Dire Straits, The Smiths, Goo Goo Dolls, Better than Ezra, the Cure, Rush, XTC, Jethro Tull, Rippingtons, Chili Peppers......
