Is Corey Grant still a walk-on?

Great question. I believe that you are correct that he is still not on scholarship. Bit of an oversight there, ha. Although I give a ton of love to Grant consistently. He isn't often thought of as a walk-on to me.

Without the release from Alabama--which I don't think he was granted--he won't be able to be on scholarship until 2013. 2-year waiting period with one year no compete for inside conference transfers if I am not mistaken.

He'll be eligible in the Fall.

I know he will be eligible in the fall, but I was just wondering if he was still considered a walk-on because the article does not mention him.

Yes. He will be eligible in the fall to play, but not for scholarship.

If Napoleon did not give him any release, that is a perfect example of why players should be allowed to go wherever after no schoilly for just one year. Or maybe the coach should be a "walk-on" regarding pay for one year???

Agreed. I understand not allowing kids to transfer back and forth for no reason, but to cripple a kid for two years for switching is ridiculous. The fact that coaches have the power to release or not is still amazing to me. If the NCAA was a governing body of sports and scholarships, they should handle the releases, not the university or its coach.

Coach Barbee is a great example of a coach that shows how players should be released without issue.

Well his had alot of practice lately. J/K guys/gals J/K

Seems like I remember Burgess getting a scholarship last fall. Was that just a one year deal?

Also, are you sure about that thing with Grant having to pay his own way for two years? I was under the impression that he had to walk on for a year because of the non-release, but that he would be on scholarship during the second year?

Regardless, thanks for the writeup, bud! When I first saw the title, my mind immediately went to Lembke; that's one walkon who is assured a vital role!

I thought the same thing about Burgess. I'm wondering if it may include former walk-ons. I actually thought that I remembered Fisher being mentioned as possibly getting one too. Regardless, this was a great read. Walk-ons are always important for a program if they play or not. Good walk ons bring the practice intensity up a notch.

Sorry, I just had to do that.

Burgess did receive a scholarship last season, but from what I understand those are one year only type scholarships. I could be wrong, but pretty confident that is how it goes for walk-on schollies. Ashton Richardson received one last season as well.

As for Grant, I am pretty confident when you transfer in  conference in the SEC you must wait two years for scholarship assistance unless otherwise cleared by the previous institution.

It is a bit late, but I found this PDF on a Pac12.org website regarding transfer rules and assistance. It has every conference in the country and mentions the SEC 2-year rule. I will look more tomorrow to confirm.

Hmm, interesting. That sure is what it looks like, isn't it? I never realized that...

Further verification from the SEC website:

Bylaw 15.01.5 subpart (e)

A student-athlete who has signed a financial aid agreement with an SEC member institution and is eligible to receive

the athletic scholarship on the institution’s first day of classes of the academic year specified on the financial aid

agreement, but who does not enter that institution or who does enter and withdraws from that institution before fully

completing his/her first semester or quarter (except when the recipient of an athletic scholarship award enters military

service before enrolling in the awarding institution and remains in military service for a period of eighteen months or

more), shall not be eligible to receive an athletics grant-in-aid during the student-athlete's first two years in residence

at the second SEC institution

It works out great for Auburn on a scholarship level. Next year I would assume he will receive one for his final two seasons but this year it is a no go. 4-star walk-ons don't come around often that's for sure.

Pretty sure he completed a semester at UAT, which appears it would nullify this rule and allow him to be put on scholarship this season. Personally, I would rather he be on scholarship, because I think we'll have room to put him on this year. :dunno:

My mind totally ignored the details in that sentence earlier. Great point out.

Unfortunately I am not a deep level black suit "insider" so I have no clue who is or isn't on scholly. I too would like for him to be on scholarship--seems like he has earned it--but not sure if it will come.

To add to the confusion, I will continue to look through the bylaws but maybe it was if he came to Auburn on scholarship immediately he would have to sit two, but instead walked-on to save a year and play this season? More to come for the head spinning department. :banghead:

Good news is he for sure is eligible to play this season. :tdau:

I'm wondering if the four year schollies that AU now provides, vs the former year to year, apply to the former walk ons that were granted. Anyone know?

Most walk-ons who earn scholarships are given the scholarship when they are going into their senior year.  These scholarships would only be for one year.  There are exceptions, such as Burgess last year.  I would think that the scholarships offered to underclassmen walk-ons would be for the remainder of their eligibility.

Current scholarship numbers from past classes and this year's 2012 class--including Prosch--it looks like Auburn will have 79 scholarships that have been given on signing day that are still on roster. With Burgess and Asthon Richardson being walk-ons to scholly guys, that should make for 81. If all my counting on fingers and toes is correct.

That would leave four more opportunities for schollies to be given to current roster members, as mentioned above by around4ever.
