Saw coach BVG Speak at the Lanier Auburn Club

FYI LanierAA is in Flowery Branch, where the Falcons practice facility is, so I am assuming he was home for a while.

Anyway, the man impressed me. Talked about how his career has taken a similar path to Chizik's, how they both are great organizers, etc. As far as football stuff, you heard the same stuff as at the interviews from spring practice. It's like he and Chizik sat down and decided what they would release about the team.

Here's what I got:

Team is still young and developmental

BVG was not at all impressed with the coaching of Roof, especially in situational football (somebody asked him about 3rd downs, and he said it looked like we werent taught what to do on third down.

DL was a bright spot this spring, DLineman are getting up the field much better

Daren Bates has a starting spot at LB, other two spots are open.

A big problem he had w/ the Falcons was that they never gave him a nickel back, and that is something he believes is key to third downs. Between T-Bell and Whitehead, I think we should be solid as far as nickel goes.

He doesn't quite understand Auburn Family yet. He knows it's there, he sees others experiencing this, but he hasnt felt it yet. Dont worry, he will this fall.

Makes you wonder why Chizik let him stay so long...

Love this guy!!!!! Dont worry coach BVG, alot of people dont understand the AUBURN FAMILY. Its usually for one of two reasons: 1. They are new to it and they will soon feel the love. This is the category coach BVG falls in. 2. They just dont wanna understand the Auburn Family. WDE!!! :wedance::party:

I too was at the meeting and I agree with most of what you say and was extremely impressed with Coach Van Gorder. I think the days of  the 40 something points being scored on us are over as long and CBVG and CGC are with us. I am really looking forward to the coming season. I do disagree with you in that he doesn't understand the Auburn Family. I just don't think he has ever experienced the concept at other schools or in the NFL. My impression was he really likes what he sees and is glad to be a part of it. I also liked what he had to say about Coach Loeffler . Good times are ahead folks, WED!!!

What did CBVG have to say about CSL?

What did CBVG have to say about CSL?

Super, he just said CSL was highly intelligent and knew what he was doing and that he would adapt the offense to the skill of the players he has which is what any knowledgeable coach would do. CVG just reiterated what everybody knows, that we are loaded with talent but we are still young. I know that phrase has been worn out but unfortuneately it is still true.

I would go with that he is new to it and he will soon fall in love with it. See at UGA they don't have the concept of family it's more of a concept of being on a chain gang. He needs to get that mentality out of his head.

I hope that he will fall in love with the AU family and want to stay for many years but it's going to be hard to hold him for more than 2-3 years. It doesn't matter because he is the man to get us back to a tougher brand of D. I am very impressed with what he says, now I just hope I'm equally as impressed with what he does. My biggest concern is having two top notch defensive minds on the same team as that can create controversy but I beleive that CGC is macro in that approach--probably to a fault in certain situations.

I agree with the concern about holding on to CBVG for 2-3 years, but what I really appreciate about this hire is that CGG made the best possible choice for AU. CBVG will fix definitely improve the D, and I still can't believe were able to hire him. Most likely, this improvement will be huge. Unlike on the offense, CGC will be able to learn from CBVG about the state-of-art playoff defenses being run in the NFL.  Unlike the offense, CGC will be able to transfer this knowledge to future team defenses.  I just can't wait to have an AU defense again. I think the defensive recruits should be jumping on this opportunity because the momentum is going to be high. Those who fail to act soon will be thinking "could of", "should of".

It's like he and Chizik sat down and decided what they would release about the team.

^Probably right. Don't know if it's good or bad, but I've never seen a more guarded coach in my life. Tons of coachspeak, no injury info, no media viewing of practices (other than stretching and warm-ups drill for the first 20 min.). Heck, he doesn't even let his players tell the media about big plays that happened in scrimmages or practices. Very strange.

What is strange to me is that you expected to hear more than 'coach-speak'.  It's a serious business.. OPSEC is as important to big-time football programs as it is to corporations and the military....You don't provide intel to your opponents.

Now with  the Malzahn watch / obsession  ended, we already  have  "CBVG will be leaving for ",  threads?

Please no, not now, too soon, just enjoy the honeymoon.

What do you expect out of coaches? Fiery candor to give other teams either information or bulletin board material?

You want the coaches to keep things close to the vest. Otherwise we have Baby Face Kiffin running around making us look bad. Those who have tight lips are usually the most professional. Think about the loser who posts on FB all the time about everything going on in their life. Do you respect that person? No. Same with coaches. I like that they don't tell us hardly anything.

I haven't seen the "CBVG will be leaving for" threads. Just speculation that he will be leaving, as all great oc and dc coaches do--prob for a hc job. It's obvious that CBVG has the cred to land a big one and fairly soon. I beleive we can keep him for hopefully 3 or 4 yrs and anything over 3 is bonus time. This is all speculation because we haven't seen a product on the field yet but I expect truly GREAT things out there. I don't think CGC could have made a much better hire, so the speculation about leaving comes with the territory when we make this type of hire. I prefer it to the alternative.

Two things here...one, we were used to Tubby laying it out there and letting anyone and everyone into practice (can anybody tell me the last time CGC held practices on the Intramural Fields?).  Two, and I hate to say this, but CNS handles it the same way CGC does and you don't hear their fans complaining about it.  I say let CGC do it his way...I think he has at least earned that right.

Was anybody thrilled about Roof's coaching style? I know a lot of you though he did a great job. In  fect, when I'd post something against Roof's coahing ways, I was blasted out of the water almost every time by a whole bunch of you.

Water under bridge a4e. Now you should slam CBVG. :P

Asfter what we had to suffer through with Roof style, I can't wait to see what coach VanGorder has in store for our defense. The same holds true for coaches Martinez and Loeffler.
