Nick Saban addresses Justin Taylor controversy, Michael Jackson ball marker

11:50 pm May 1, 2012, by Michael Carvell

Three months after signing day, Alabama coach Nick Saban finally spoke publicly about his controversial recruitment of Justin Taylor.

Taylor, the running back from North Atlanta High School, had been committed to Alabama for nearly a year but was told a few weeks before signing day that he couldn’t sign with the Crimson Tide. Click here to read more

Saban said it because of Taylor’s knee injury that cut his senior season, asking him to enroll next January in a practice known as “grayshirting.” Speculation became rampant in the college recruiting world that instead it was a reason to oversign at Alabama and then manage the roster to keep as many recruits as possible within the rules. Taylor ended up signing with Kentucky in February over waiting on Alabama.

On Tuesday, Saban was asked to clarify Taylor’s situation:

“I don’t think I should even be commenting on that because these guys … we’re not supposed to comment about these recruits unless they’re coming to our place,” Saban said.

“But you know, we made a rule in the SEC that you can’t oversign. We had an injured player [Taylor] who agreed to start school in January and then changed his mind. And then we were full. What else could we do?

“But it’s good that you all created such a tremendous story about all of this. My honesty and integrity about the kids has always been straight up and up front. We never get rid of any kids. We made an agreement, and the guy [Taylor] changed his mind. He got to do what he wanted to do, and we’re disappointed he’s not coming to our place.”

Really, nick?  I wonder if any of your "processed" kids feel like they were not "gotten rid of"?  Weeman is so full of himself that he will lie directly to any/every one, knowing his fanbase will make excuses and sing his praises.  Weeman isn't going anywhere, people.  He and the turds go together like peas and carrots.

I could be wrong, but I thought it was Saban or one of his assistants who approached Taylor with the greyshirt option and he rejected it, but was told that the scholarship offer was still good---at least until Yeldon pulled his switch, then Bama probably didn't need any more running backs for this class so they wanted him to greyshirt. The same was done to Darius Philon, too. He rejected the greyshirt offer but was told that the scholarship offer would be honored, until Bama got last-minute commitments from higher-ranked recruits in GA and VA. At least Taylor had a couple of weeks to contact other schools to let them know he would be available. Philon found out that morning of signing day that if he wanted to come to Bama he would have to take a greyshirt.

Taylor changed his mind? Uh... only when he was told he no longer had a scholly and would have to pay his own way. Well, duh he changed his mind, because Nicky went back on his word as usual and yanked his scholly for someone else.

Honesty and integrity? That must be meant as a joke. No way saban is that dumb to believe people think he has any of either after his track record the past decade. It is win at all costs and honesty or integrity are not a part of his "process".

We never get rid of any kids? Umm.. when you sign 10-12 too many each year, what exactly do you call it then? Jesus, does the man ever tell the truth?

Disspointed he is not coming to turd land? Apparently, not dissapointed enough to keep your word and honor the scholly you promised him lil nicky.

Wow, he is unbelieveable at what he will say. No lie, no matter how obvious, seems out of the reach of the little man.

“But you know, we made a rule in the SEC that you can’t oversign. We had an injured player [Taylor] #1 & #2 who agreed to start school in January and then changed his mind. And then we were full. What else could we do?

“But it’s good that #3 you all created such a tremendous story about all of this. #4 & #5 My honesty and integrity about the kids #6 & #7 has always been straight up and up front. #8 We never get rid of any kids. We made an agreement, and #9 the guy [Taylor] changed his mind. #10 He got to do what he wanted to do, and #11 we’re disappointed he’s not coming to our place.”

Okay, springer, I took the challenge and I counted 11, maybe 12--I couldn't remember if the SEC/NCAA has a rule against talking about "recruits" after signing day given that they are technically no longer "recruits" then.  That's a pretty good tally, even for devil.gif given that his statement was only 10 sentences total!  How'd I do?

Well he must be doing something right with his lying because he continues to pull in great talent. That or either the recruits not to bright or all the stuff that goes along with being a Bama player (wink wink nudge nudge) is to hard to pass up.

Combination of all the extra benefits and financial inducements bama players receive and the recruits and their parents that ignore his past track record not being too bright (see Calloway, the guy in this article, Philon, and many others).

I will say, I think recruits and their parents are getting slightly smarter after the warning signs and past track record of his has been getting put in front of them over and over and over. Still you do not get to be a world class liar with years of experience if you cannot sell your lies well.

This statement We made an agreement... I think that is bs, I think Saban caught the kid unprepared for his scholarship offer being yanked so he didn't say he wouldn't greyshirt until he found out he could get a scholarship from someone else.  But, you did great.  I'm not sure just what Saban was honest about and don't understand why the media does not tear him a new one over lies like that.

We see our top players complaining on twitter about having no money. How many bammer players have you seen complaining about having no food or gas money?? That's what I thought.

In typical bammer arrogance, the bammer nation has responed to your claim of 11-12 untruths, and are claiming 22!!

The truly sad part of this is that if you replace the name "saban" with any other coach's name in the SEC, this would be the headline of every news story, article, blog, tweet, etc.  Put the name Chizik, Richt, Muschamp or Spurrier in this story, and they would be crucified for yanking a scholly from a kid.  Sabahr does it, and you get one guy who writes an article about it IN SABAHR'S FAVOR!!!!

I truly think that weeman could be the anti-christ.

He fits the mold. Has no morals and hurts people every chance he gets. He lies through his teeth and has 1000's of brainless fans that think he is higher than God.

If only someone could convince him to walk off a cliff. Then all those lemmings would go off right behind him and the recruits would be better off. Then we won't have to listen to him or them whining about how it is not fair that they can't cheat or that everyone talks about their scams.

He is a liar plain and simple.....and he has no integrity or ethics when dealing with the young men he decides he doesn't need anymore. I know that much for a fact.

We all know it.  The sad thing is that these recruit's parents know it, but choose to ignore it in hopes of their child getting that NFL paycheck.  Morals take a backseat to greed for most of these parents.

That's a joke - all the parents and 4-5* recruits see is that Saban has put 20 players in the NFL in the last 3 yrs and 50% of those went in the 1st round.  These parents & recruits see NFL dollar $ign$ and are lining up to get the chance to be next in line for the draft.

^^Absolutely correct.  The recruits and their parents see NFL money and they see that saban cranking out NFL draftees faster than anyone else right now.  All they want is their NFL paycheck.  Heck, they don't even have to stay at uat for more than 3 yrs before they hit the jackpot of a first rounders's salary.

i think the worst part of this story is that saban commented about it at all.  first he says he shouldn't comment, then immediately puts his version of the story out there.

there is no way this kid would or should comment.  he now has a signed LOI to another school and those coaches probably would have him on a gag order.  completely inexcusable for a multimillion dollar football coach/power broker to make a comment (that infers the kid is a liar) without the kid having an equal opportunity to reply ...

i did not read this article, but if they did not call this kid for an opportunity to comment, then it was a crappy story.
