Chizik says to be encouraged

We have good reason to be encouraged and there is little doubt we should see a lot of improvement this year.  However, we can go from being good to very good without seeing much difference in our won-loss record.  To see much improvement in our won-loss record we have to be better than very good.

It would be different if we were in a position to win most of the games we lost last year, but we were not.  We were beat soundly by much better teams in most of those losses.  We were able to win all of our close games last year... and the year before that as well.  The SEC west is brutal and everyone is going to come at us with everything they have.

^^^Not like last year.  Arky, LSwho and uat will be more concerned with each other and they will not be concerned with us BECAUSE of last year's games.  They, along with their fan bases will think things have stayed static...they haven't.  Watch and see...

All of this talk since the spring is VERY VERY un-Chizik like. Things had to go very well this spring and in particular one position. I think something clicked with KF this spring and they know what a special QB can do. You guys remember how off the first pass attempt KF made at A day was, then the rest were right on target. That showed me a lot that he did not lose confidence. This is going to be fun, not to get ahead but just think what the 2013 season is going to be like!!

Arky/LSU/Bama/UGA's fans may take AU lightly, but you better believe that their coaches and players WILL NOT.  And IMO, aTm will be ready to prove that they belong in the SEC and they will be gunning for every SEC team they play this year.  Heck, Vandy has a fired up coach that will have their players ready to play hard.  I don't see any team we play taking us lightly this year.  The fans and internet posters can act like AU is irrelevant, but the conference coaches and players know better.

You're only fooling yourself if you actually believe that.  Those teams know what we're bringing to the table this year, and they won't let up for us, or anyone else.

And those who actually believe that we will necessarily still lose all five games we did last year unless we are "better than very good" are fooling themselves, too. Yeah, we got blown out five times last year. The flip side of that is we haven't lost a game we were in for two years. Every time we had a win in sight, we found a way to make it happen.

We're still a year away. Chizik has said it. Pat Dye has said it. I've said it. Many of you have said it. We all know that we're still a year away from having the program completely rebuilt to the point that we stop rebuilding and start reloading.

But that doesn't mean this year won't be special. On the contrary: this year has the potential to be special particularly because no one is expecting it. The talent is there. The depth is there. While youth is still our biggest problem, there is some experience there now, and a great deal of it remembers playing for the national championship.

28 players, to be exact, played on that team. They remember what it takes to win them all. As a matter of fact, I feel like that played a part in the blowout losses: they realized they didn't quite have what it took to stand up to the big dogs, and they laid down a little bit. I don't think we were that much worse than the teams we lost to, I just think the little bit of difference was magnified.

And the schedule sets up perfectly, too. It's dangerous, sure, but I really think we're better than Clemson, and I think we are perfectly capable of delivering a knockout blow early on. I think they're going to come in cocky, and one good punch to the mouth might well do them in.

Beating Clemson handily, if we do (which is definitely a big if, because they have enough talent that the game could go the other way in a hurry), sets the stage for an epic run. It gives us confidence going into the teeth of the SEC schedule, and playing LSU, Arkansas, and Georgia at home makes a big difference. Anyone who has been to Jordan Hare for a big game knows what I'm talking about.

By the time we travel to T-town, we won't be a young team anymore. Most of our starters will have basically two years of starting under their belts at that point, and Kiehl will have almost a full year of being the guy. Going into that game, we'll likely have a loss or two, but a win might well send us to Atlanta...and how cool would it be to go from 9-2 and all but out of the discussion to beating Bama and winning the SEC, going to the Sugar Bowl and gearing up for a 2013 campaign in which we will again bring back the vast majority of our starters?

I agree for the most part....though I feel the winner of the SEC CG goes to the Big Game regardless of win loss..

While I do think to a point you can consider this confidence, you have to remember it was the A-Day game. Much different when you miss that first pass in November in Jordan-Hare West.

Only way a 2 loss SEC team gets in is if there are no more than one other major conference champions with 1 loss. SEC gets first dibs, but if, say, Texas is undefeated and Michigan has 1 loss, you better believe the SEC would be left out of it.

I love the positive spin you put on last season's butt-whoopings.

I'd love to find something positive to take away from those losses last year.  I just don't have the stomach to watch those games again to try to find it. :-[

Well then just take my word for it and be happy that 2011 is in the books.

We positively don't have to play those games again. like Red said, those are in the books.  :zapbama:

Kind of like our players did with Utah State last year, right?  You are a fool if you think that kids won't underestimate their opponents.  It happens every year numerous times.

And Vandy's coach can get as fired up as he wants...but he is still has only Vandy talent...ever hear of putting lipstick on a pig?

For the most part, you are doing just what I said people do, re: everything has remained static from last year.  People need to wake up and see what is in front of their faces!  The teams we play this year lost good players last year too...some lost a lot.  We didn't and neither did Florida.  Check it out if you don't believe me.
