Summer Workouts

Pardon my ignorance, but could someone enlighten me as to the rules and limitaions forced on the players during unsupervised workouts?  I assume that QB's are free to work on routes and timing with receivers but what university facilities are they allowed to use?  Do they, or may they, use defensive players in their workouts?  Can they use the practice facilities or do they have to work off-campus?  If anyone has any idea of what goes on during summer workouts I would really appreciate hearing from you.

This is not official but going off my memory.  The players are allowed 8 hours per week of voluntary workouts in the weight and training room with a trainer or strength and conditioning coach.  This is the only participation by a coach that is allowed.  The players can then spend unlimited time working out "on their own" with other players.  They are allowed to use university facilities and equipment as long as they are taking classes.  Pads are not allowed although helmets are.  These workouts are ususlly run by QBs and/or upperclassmen.  Some leaders schedule two workouts per day, morning and afternoon.  Although these workouts are voluntary, attendance is kept up with and players are expected to attend one of the sessions.  Voluntary?  :dunno:

I recall that when Spurrier took over at USCe he found that summer workouts had been truly voluntary without the participation he wanted.  He explained it to those players holding out something like this: while they are voluntary, it is also voluntary for me to allow you to play on this football team.

If you've got a really good S&C coach, he can provide a ton of direction to the leaders on the team and he can basically impliment the program/system used for the "voluntary workouts".

The S&C can also keep tabs on the players that participate in the voluntary field workouts and the players that don't.  That way when some goofball decides to skip a practice or two, he can pay the price in the weight room the next day. :-X

I've been on the receiving end of a S&C coach that felt like I wasn't doing my part to help the team develope in the offseason.  I paid for it later when I puked for a solid hour in the weight room.  Live and learn I guess.

Someone from the training staff can and may be required to be at all voluntary workouts after some serious instances in the past. I believe the NCAA mandated this awhile back. No member of the coaching staff can be present or even watch from a distance. The workouts are run by the qb`s snd other upperclassmen.
