Face Value on Vandy

Their stadium is a joke and you would think with all the money they make that they could at least give it a facelift. At least they have Nashville to call home!

Don't most schools keep their athletic budget separate from the rest of the University?  That was the impression that I was under, but don't really know for sure...

Vandy may.........But I am sure they could scrape up enough from under the couch to throw at it.

Dudley Field is land-locked, or rather concrete, brick, and asphalt locked on all four sides.  They actually just did some "enhancements", the centerpiece being a berm, or grassy knoll, beyond one end-zone so that families can picnic and enjoy their chardonney and brie during the game.  I'm not kidding; years ago, my sons and I went to a Vandy-AU game there (the one where they almost beat us except for a goal-line stand and Marcus Robinson pick six).  In the parking lot, where their "tail-gating" occurs, many SUV hatches were opened to act as tabletops for wine and cheese, and FLOWER VASES!!

I go to one Vandy game a year in Nashville and it is an interesting venue.

Looking forward to the Tigers this year.

Last time we went  Nashville was buzzin' after they beat us and went undefeated doing so.

The atmosphere is small college friendly and the visitors will easily outnumber the locals.

The 'dores crowd arrives fashionalbly late and in generic urban black.

The campus is pretty and the location is hard to beat.

Parking can be an issue.   You may see signs, "No tailgating" ( in parenphasis, read "for LSU" )

A few years ago LSU parkers in a Public School lot put up a cash bar and set off the locals.

Book hotels early, the day SEC schedule was announced I called my favorite and it was booked

up.

I've bought extra tickets outside on occasion, and for SEC games, have never paid more than face .

I lived in Nashville for about 5 years before coming to Bham in 2006, and I saw the same thing

About 30 minutes before AU/Vandy kickoff, a couple of guys in a Lexus SUV pulled into a nearly empty reserved parking lot by the stadium, opened the rear hatch, got out 2 camping chairs and a 6-pack of wine coolers.  :-\

IMO, for the money, the campus isn't that attractive.  Too broken up and too many types of architecture.  The Peabody Campus is really nice, but is so different than the main campus.

OK, I see your point and agree on Peabody.  Vandy campus'  add ones don't always match.

Esp. parking decks, and hotels along West End Av., nicer  walks over to frats and down by ballpark by stadium.

Drive thru Belmlont's campus or better yet, get out and walk around and take a look too.

It is its' own place.

I think of it as the anti Red Stick.

A lot of  crowd  is smuggly pleased not to be overly concerned about the football match scheduled for today.

Several years ago a lot of the  male students had billed gold braided yachting hats and that was a hoot.

The students can get fired up,  by Ivy League standards,  from time to time.

Reserved parking is discouragingly empty esp. after you've taken  a hike to get there.

I wish our prices were that low. I'd start buying season tickets again. But it is right now, there's no way I can afford season tickets again. I really miss coming to the Plains for all the home games.

Went to Vandy in 08 I guess it was.....a nice visit for a game.  Fans were reasonable, moderate ticket prices and Nashville is an interesting city.  Stadium wasn't much but then again, we weren't in nose-bleed territory so all in all....a good road game venue.

I look forward to going to the Vandy/Auburn game again this year. I chose not to go last time because of the Game Day crowd and the traffic. My choice was worse though. I watched the game with a Vandy grad and it ended up costing me dinner! ;(

I also took the kids to the Vandy/Auburn baseball game. They have a pretty nice field and a good team. Their pitcher was bringing the heat and shut us down completely in lopsided whippin', but it was fun for a while.

BTW, did you know that Herbstreit now resides in Nashville?  Apparently he was run out of Columbus, OH by the idiot Buckeye fans after he had some disparaging words for Ohio State.

I admit Nashville is a nice place to live. We've been here more than 10 years now and it would take a lot to get me to move.

Vandy PhD, 1996 here.

No, the stadium isn't much.  But it is easy to get to, and it serves just fine for visiting fans.  Hopefully, as Vandy becomes increasingly competitive, they'll have the revenue to do more with it.  In my opinion, they should always keep it small.

Vandy's campus is diverse because of the nature of its growth.  There's the old school area, which is quite lovely.  Try to find one single weed.  But the needs for super-modern medical and engineering facilities in a land-locked campus implies that diverse architecture people are talking about.  I personally never fell in love with the campus, but there are nice spots.

As for budget, two things to know.

(1) Even universities with huge endowments got crushed in 2008.  The money is there, but the endowment draw took a huge hit.  Places like Harvard and Princeton locked salaries and froze hiring.  I don't know if that's changed yet, but a university business model means you can have literally billions of dollars but not be able to access it.

(2) Vandy made a brilliant move by moving the athletic department into the rest of the university.  People said Vandy should just give up SEC sports after that move, but take a look at football, basketball (men and women), baseball, golf, and other sports since then.  It's become a recruiting tool, in that football players get a genuine chance to mix in with the rest of campus life.

Right now in the Directors' Cup standings (overall D1) athletics Auburn is #40 and Vandy #56.

Good stuff.  I understand about the rapid growth of that concrete jungle known as Monroe Carell Children's Hospital, but God knows what a blessing that has been to hurting and grieving families, and will continue to do so for years to come.  Then all one has to do, is walk one block to be in Hillsboro Village; what a wonderful place, with the best pancakes on earth!!
