"I'm going to refresh your memory (of the Virginia bowl game): The sky is falling, we don't have our starting tailback, all the sudden our quarterback gets hurt, and all the sudden we don't have our starting offensive coordinator. But we found a way with our young guys to come back and win that game and win it very decisively in the end. Those are very, very positive things that happened with our football team."

Can't say I really agree. I was never worried about UVA. They had a soft team, practically no NFL talent on their roster and played a weak schedule. I expected a "relatively easy" win by a couple of TDs from the night they were announced as our opponent (as opposed to Va Tech who I wanted no part of).

This board constantly reminds me of a quote from CGC's book that a friend told me about, "those well intentioned but totally misinformed and misguided message board folks". I question the well intentioned part. We wonder why we only get coach speak? I'm surprised coaches even speak at all anymore considering the newer media's environment.

^^^THIS^^^  I thought that was pretty deep info coming from CGC at this point. Now if he'd just name the damn starting QB!!! It's not hard coach...say it...KIEHL FRAZIER.

UVA was labeled as a physical team that was supposed to push AU around...most southern analysts picked UVA to win, I know CSS, Barhardt, and someone else from CBS sports all predicted an AU loss.. Unless I am mistaken UVA was in the running for Coastal title or the other one prior to losing to VA Tech.  That was a quality football team AU beat....and a excellent building block for 2012

Guess I'm stupid but, for the life of me, I can't figure out what he meant by "and all of the sudden we didn't have our starting offensive coordinator. " Can someone please fill me in?

He failed a drug test...wait, never mind, I'm thinking of someone else.

Maybe the quote was supposed to read "defensive coordinator" that's all I can figure

I'm pretty sure this is what was supposed to be said...

Makes sense. CGC was a pretty good 'substitute' DC coming off the 'bench'.

If I'm not mistaken we were picked to lose by most national pickers as well. It was awesome to dominate them in the end. I just wish that CGC would have punched it in the endzone instead of taking a knee those last few downs. I'm all for scoring, I feel sympathy knees are crap. Score TD's until it's over! Thats the offenses job.

Totally agree with the analyst. I cannot understand why so many AU fans are thinking we are going to have a repeat of last year (record wise).

Guess they know more than Pat Dye or Coach Chiz.

No need to let Clemson, SEC, etc. defensive coordinators know what to prepare for any earlier than necessary.  ;D

The point wasn't so much who the team we played, rather that our backs were to the wall and we came out and absolutely laid out a quality opponent without an offense, quarterback, or defensive coordinator. That's impressive, I don't care who you are. And everyone (read:most everyone) from that game is back + new coaches. and recruits.

I'm excited. So what, maybe you're not, shoot me.

I think the quote is correct as written.  Not to argue with Mr. Beach, Coach Malzahn's departure was announced Dec. 14.  He coached the bowl game but everyone was questioning how much he was coaching for the Tigers vs recruiting for Arky State.  Of course Coach Roof's departure was announced one week earlier.  Bottom line we were down at least 1.5 coaches and had just suffered through a tough loss at TubbervilleDenny.  The sky was falling according to many experts.  So all we did was go out and take care of business in Atlanta.  Then we hired a NFL D coordinator, an O coordinator who is on first name basis with a fellow named Brady and a db coach who recruits like crazy and can coach.  Now we have a bunch of young men with a year of Yox under their belt and another outstanding recruiting class.  We all have things that keep us from a good nights sleep, but I intend to rely on the opinion of a guy who has 4 SEC championship rings (CPFD) and another who coached on 3 undefeated, untied teams and who sleeps beside a crystal ball.  Does that translate into 8 wins or 12?  Who knows but I feel pretty confident it translates into a much improved ball club.  What I know for sure (and props to Corey Smith - let me know if you catch the reference) is that September is coming fast and I can hardly wait, they say these guys might take us all the way.  And if they do I will be flying high and there will probably be a happy tear in my eye but rain or shine, I'll be yelling go Tigers from the 20 yard line.

I was just speculating...you could very well be correct. The premise i was working off of was that Coach Malzahn was still there while Coach Roof wasn't.  :dunno:

I do not see how anyone could have thought UVA would push AU around last year. They got whipped by some bad and mediocre teams in UNC, NC state, and Southern Miss before AU crushed them. On top of that they had not beaten a ranked team all year (that was ranked in the final polls before the bowls). Their best victories were against an 8-5 GT team and a badly overrated FSU that was 9-3 or 8-4? Then the only good team they played all year humiliated them 38-0. I am not sure about the experts, but I fully expected AU to handle UVA in the bowl last year and was surprised, but happy when they were announced as our opponent. Especially when I was expecting Va Tech who mopped the field with them a week or so earlier.

By the way, I am not saying it was not a very good and enjoyable win that helped build momentum for this season. I am just saying I fully expected us to beat UVA last year. Guess it is a good thing if some of the national guys sold us short as usual, as it probably helped perception that it was a big win.

I felt the big measurement of improvement in the Va game was how the defense played.  No more d line reading and reading again, they were allowed to use their God given talent and be a disruptive force.  Linebackers and secondary were flying to the ball and gang tackling.  If a mistake was made it was made giving it their all, not over-reading and over-thinking.  That defense would have looked better against any level of opponent.
