I think we're going to end up with Buchanan. He seems the safer bet, and quite honestly I'm not sure I wouldn't prefer him over Rettig even if Rettig is healthy. I'd be perfectly happy with Rettig, but put me firmly in the Ryan Buchanan camp.

If we sign Johnson, it will be as an athlete. He might be given the chance to play QB, but he will not be the only QB in this class.

JJ is not a dual-threat QB. I see him as a Jason Campbell type but Johnson is a whole lot greener. JJ has also been offered by AU in basketball.

Auburn has Kiehl Frazier and Zeke Pike, so i don't see this as a "must hit" for Auburn for a great QB in this class. All the ones on our list has strengths and weaknesses, and all will need plenty of time to develop into SEC QBs.

Jason Campbell is probably the best comparison you can make to JJ, quite frankly; Campbell was a star basketball player in high school as well. Both are dual threat in that they have the capacity and athleticism to run, but neither is dual threat in that they prefer to play pocket passer.

Also, let us not forget how raw Pike is. He has all the tools to be a fantastic QB, but I think it'll take him a full redshirt year before he's even at the point, progression wise, that Kiehl was at to begin last season, and that's if he pans out the way we would like him to. (This point, btw, is the reason I don't think we take Johnson as the only QB: we took a project type of prospect last year, I think it's more likely to take a more polished QB this time around.)

I do think it's important that we get a solid QB in this class, but I have no doubt that we will.

I agree with you Red in that we will signed two QBs in this class. I also believe, just as you do, that we will sign a solid one. I think Max Browne, Ryan Burns, Shane Morris, Tyrone Swoopes, Cody Thomas are great QBs in this class. Beyond that group are question marks to a certain extent.

If we indeed sign two QBs, hopefully one of the two will be solid.

I only see us signing two QBs this class if we struggle this year at that position. So I hope we only sign one. I think Buchanon, it's not very often Auburn signs people from California. But we also have a player from Delaware and Arizona on the team right now so....

Lot of people will be reminded of Jason Campbell when they see Jeremy Johnson. Johnson throws a great deep ball too.

Never said we would sign two, just that we might. If Moseley decides to transfer, maybe, but even then I think it's more likely we sign one.

If JJ has the poise of campbell that is good enough for me. Jason campbell had the most poise and calm demeanor in pressure situations of anyone I have ever seen.

Yeah, when he completed the 4th and 11 (or whatever it was) to CT with time winding down against LSU, he had defenders coming at him from left, right, and front, but he could just as easily have been going through the motions at practice, such was his composure. If JJ is anything like JC, we've got a good one!

I'm no talent scout, but why are we calling JJ a project?  What little I have seen looks pretty effective.  Not just long passes, or just passes hitting his receiver in stride, but catch-able passes.  He also did some nice things looking off his receivers and pump faking the defense in the 7-on-7 video.  He seems to be naturally gifted at accurate passing.

I think he just started playing QB as a sophomore (not sure on that though), unlike say Kiehl Frazier who has been playing QB his whole life, but I must admit that I was wondering the same thing. I mean, I remember the term being applied to Campbell as well, and he didn't really start to come around until his third year on campus so maybe it applies.

Also, while he may be a project, he seems to be a relatively sure fire project because of his tools and his teacher.

Seen several comments that his throwing mechanics needs a lot of work.  It shows in his films.  Great athlete though and I am sure CSL will have a huge impact.

He's the 18th rated pro-style QB according to Rivals. Buchanan is the 25th rated pro-style QB, so i guess Buchanan have more flaws that needs to be worked on.

Probably.  Scout has them ranked very similar too though they have JJ as #18 and a 4 star.  They do list him as having areas for improvement on his release and accuracy which is probably the only reason he is not ranked higher.  http://auburn.scout.com/a.z?s=6&p=8&c=1&nid=5088134

Meh, this is an initial ranking...at this point, Shon Coleman was still rated three stars and everyone in the south wanted his teammate, Damien Robinson, who was rated four stars. Coleman ended up a five star and Robinson either stayed as a low 4 or dropped to a 3.

However, that having been said, he IS pretty raw...but that's a good thing. As well as he's done at Carver so far, everything he's done there has been on pretty much pure athleticism, and his rating is based on that and his measurables. Get him in a college weight room so he can fill out, and let Loeffler go to work on him.

Great points Red.  I have always said I would put the top 10/15 players in Alabama against any other states best.  And JJ is the best QB in the past few years from in state.  CSL will be a big advantage too.
