Guess now we understand why he was willing to take this job...on a short term contract.

How in the world can a HC focus on his job with this hanging over his head ? It will be interesting to see if the Arkansas players can circle the wagons and do it on their own. This reminds me of Bootlegger's boy taking the Cowboys over from JJ and riding his work to a Super Bowl victory.

I hate it for Smith, but that Arkansas game is looking less and less intimidating with all of their distractions.

That could be ...but I figure the purpose of the 10 month contract is to limit his exposure in the bankruptcy.  Get all that stuff behind him and then start over with a nice new four year deal IF the hawgs have a good season.

I don't have much respect for Smith but he has had some success from time to time.

Before this news, the assumption was Smith came back to run Petrino's team for one season with an outstanding sr qb and rb.  Both of those players could have filed for the NFL supplemental draft after Petrino was canned and it seemed Smith helped keep them around.  But who knows what's going on.

IMO, recruiting could take a huge hit if this season doesn't go well for them and Smith looks like a one and done coach.

I don't see this causing too much of a distraction for the season, but His contract could very well hurt recruiting. Arkansas probably hired him out of necessity and will be searching for a better coach for next season.

I think if I was Arkansas I would quickly go after Mike Leach if Smith isn't a home run.

Sometimes those teams are the most dangerous, though, even if they have a loss or two coming into JHS.

So they are going from 3* to 2* commits?

It's going to be hard for them to take a recruiting hit......they have almost always lived on the 'coach em up' philosophy

Arky recruiting stays around the bottom of the SEC anyway - I don't see how it can take much of a hit.

Hiring JLS was really the only thing UA could do with the timing of the Petrino fiasco.

I'm very interested to see who UA hires to permanently replace Petrino.  The school is in the middle of upgrades/renovations to their football facilities, and Petrino was able to get revenue way up in his last couple of years.  He had a winning product, it will interesting to see what the next HC can do.

Recruiting can always take a hit. Arkansas mainly recruited in-state and usually had first dibs but Arkansas State may step up at Arkansas' expense.

Actually, this is a good move by Smith.  Go ahead now and get it out in the open, rather than just letting some beat reporter try to get his name out there and start crap in the middle of the season.  By the time SEC Media Days rolls around, this will have fallen off the radar completely.

Is it just me or are the power brokers at Arkansas throwing their future away on the chance they can make a championship run this season?

Yeah, I think they are throwing their money away because I don't think this guy can get it done.  Let's face it, if BP couldn't get it done, what makes anyone think that this clown can...I mean really!  :banghead:
