Thigpen talks defense

Recommended Posts

"If Dee Ford stays healthy, I don't see there being a better defensive end in the country," Thigpen said. Thigpen added that Ford is the most destructive defensive end he's seen on the field since Julius Peppers.

"And that's saying a lot," Thigpen said.

Love the quote about Jonathan Wallace: "His work habits are as good as any quarterback I've been around," Thigpen said. "If I get to the office at 7 a.m., he's already in the film room at 7. If that kid has an a hour to spare, he's up there studying and watching film."

I would say that is saying alot considering that Corey Lemonier is on the other end!

I cannot explain my thoughts and reasoning behind this, but I have a strong belief that Jonathan Wallace is going to surprise a lot of members of the Auburn Family. He isn't getting a lot of hype at this time, but I think that is going to change in the not too distant future. I don't think Coach Loeffler gave him a scholly to ride the pine or be a pretty ornament.   :we: :we:

Maybe comments like this can help get Zeke's head straight.

I remember the same thing being said about Cam when he arrived on campus, about studying film and such.

Dear Lord...that's almost scary. Our defensive line is going to look NASTY this year...

That IS nice to hear. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see a heck of a battle between Wallace, Johnson, and whomever we bring in for the 2014 class for the starting position when Frazier moves on.

Good article.

With respect to Thigpen's comments:

On Wallace, sometimes a person who feels very fortunate to be where they are will appreciate and value it the most. Often times they will be the ones that will work the hardest to take full advantage of their opportunity and will be the most motivated to be successful.

On Frazier, I think that comment about Kiehl being respected says a lot if you are reading what Thigpen is saying there.

On Ford, Thigpen's point about Ford's ability and what we were hearing from Spring practice is something we have talked a lot about on here this year. There is no team in the country that will have 6 DEs with the level of talent AU will have, all rotating in to the game staying fresh. Ford and Lemonier will be leading the charge.

I liked the point about cerebral players. Good to know we'll be looking for that even more. Not a knock on any of our current players!

So, who thinks Ford takes Eguae's starting spot?

I thought Nosa was young, but on the field he decidely provided some of the bright spots last year. I expect it to be a battle and if Ford takes it, and it sounds very well like he might, I'm with Red on this one. That ain't almost scary, that is for real scary. Bout dang time :we:

Nice article. Respect ain't just handed out, it is earned, Thig makes it sound as if KF did just that. Oh heck yeah :hellyeah:

NICE article.......

Thigpen also said the way VanGorder conducts his meetings is unique. He said VanGorder will explain a scheme and his reasoning behind it, but then ask for input from other coaches. If another coach has an idea, according to Thigpen, VanGorder will say, "You know what? That makes a lot of sense. I like it." Thigpen said that type of open-mindedness is unusual since coaches tend to have their opinion and stick with it.

That speaks worlds to me about Van Gorder. That he is willing to consider things that way, even having been around as long as he has and had the success that he has, tells me that he really is that smart. The ability to adjust your own scheme to mesh with the rest of the staff is a definite sign of his intelligence.

So, who thinks Ford takes Eguae's starting spot?

I don't know. I've been seeing him as Lemonier's backup, because both seem to be more rush ends than run stoppers, which is more Nosa's specialty, but if Ford proves he can take on the run as well then I don't know how you keep him off the field, and he's not taking Lemonier's spot.

I don't think it really matters. Whoever starts will be part of a 6 man rotation anyway, keeping them all as fresh as possible. Its going to be a beautiful thing to watch.

Tis a good point, and with that in mind, I still think Eguae starts as Ford backs up Lemonier, but I think they'll have a third and long type package with Ford opposite Lemonier and Craig Sanders moving down to DT.

I agree......I think we will see Lemonier and Ford on the field at the same time, and Eguae and Owens rotating into the game and the use of situational combinations depending on down and distance.  I think Sanders will also factor in, and maybe even Delaine at times.  I would also not be surprised to see some lineups with more than 2 DE's on the field at the same time.
