AUld fAUx@ 2,584
Came back home after the 4th and found this article (link below) in one of the newspapers littering my yard. Nothing earth-shaking. Windham is a "reminiscent meanderings" columnist who shows up in the local section (not sports). I figured, however, that few on this site prowl the TLoosa paper for Auburn news (this is probably the longest AU-related article I've seen here in my 10+years residence), and post it for your reading pleasure. No comments on the article have since appeared in Letters or "Sound Off" sections. http://www.tuscaloosanews.com/article/20120701/NEWS/120639991

But he was wrong, dead wrong. The Alabama Nation condemned the poisoning and even established a fund to help Auburn save the trees. Like John Wilkes Booth, who thought the assassination of Abraham Lincoln would make him the toast of the South, Updyke instead was rejected and humiliated by the very people he may have thought were his greatest supporters."This may be true of most Bammers, but what about those who were requesting autographs of Updyke in New Orleans? Sure, there are some good Bama fans who were truly appalled at what happened, but I know several who were posting gleeful exuberance on Facebook immediately after finding out about it, only to take the posts down when realizing exactly how hideous it makes them look. The amount of gumps who have posed for pictures with him and such is indicative of the under the table acceptance, and even lauding, of their mascot. And yes, he is perfect as a mascot for the bammer faithful, complete with the stupid stuffed elephant hat and all.

However, I'd be willing to bet that at least one of the bammers you work with has snickered with pride about destroying Toomers. If you don't think they do, then you don't know them very well. It was a backhanded compliment, but a compliment nonetheless. I hate him in a lot of ways, but I have more respect for him than the vast majority of Auburn fans. Say what you will, and much of it is true, but you can't deny that he was a hell of a football coach. He was a dirty rotten drunkard, and he bent the rules a good bit farther than anyone who has actually broken them in the last 30 years, but he didn't rise to the level he was at by not knowing how to teach the game. I don't hate him for being a great coach. I hate him for teaching the ignorant Bama masses how to hate Auburn. You cannot reason with them, argue with them, or talk to them because they think like the Bear taught them to think. He's a great coach. I wish he would have stayed at TAMU or Kentucky though. Kentucky would be a much better school for football tradition- see how well they handle basketball? The Bama mentality is just disgusting.

Kentucky would be a much better school for football tradition- see how well they handle basketball? The Bama mentality is just disgusting. He didn't stay in Lexington specifically because of their basketball program. Seems like I remember that when he was hired there, they promised him equal resources as Adolph Rupp, which didn't happen whether it was promised or not. He got fed up and went to TAMU. However, I don't blame him for their mentality, at least not the way that you do. Dude was first in at least one of the two major polls during 6 out of 25 years there. That's 24% of the time, or almost one in every four years. He was something like 19-6 against us, and captured 13 SEC Championships. THAT is where they get their sense of entitlement. It doesn't matter that we've owned them since Bear died, they've been successful enough that they never lost the arrogance. If a season goes downhill, then rather than face up to current facts they simply cannot get around, they put their colors away and pretend not to be all that interested in football for a while. Btiger1982 6
I watch every moment of Auburn football, good or bad! I get mad for a little while if we lose, but then I come back to reality. Auburn football is euphoric to me and I bleed orange and blue! I am so thankful that I was raised to be an Auburn Tiger! My dad left two things to me, my last name and my allegiance to everything Auburn! For that, I say thank you! WAR EAGLE!
