Gainesville Sun's top 25 SEC games

Recommended Posts

I wasn't sure this even warranted a new topic. But, I've got some time on my hands today, so here goes.

Some writer for the Gainesville Sun is counting down a list of the top 25 SEC games for 2012. He's down to number 11, which he says is Auburn vs Clemson. Earlier, he had Auburn vs Alabama at number 14. I don't understand how a non-conference game can be lower ranked than the Iron Bowl. I bet he'll have Florida games for all his top ten.

Here are the links:

Also, he says the last time Auburn played Clemson was in 2010.

Blah. Probably going on the assumption that the Iron Bowl will be dominated by Bama again, and only mentioned that one because of the magnitude of the rivalry.

The number 1 game every year is the Auburn/Alabama game. Always has been, always will be. All of the other games are just teasers leading up to that 1 game.

And that's on a national level, not just in the conference. There isn't another rivalry like it in college football. Closest thing I can think to compare it with is UNC-Duke in basketball.

This may be true, but I can see why he didn't list it as the #1 SEC game of the year- that Alabama/LSU game will, again, be some else entirely. I think our best competition-wise game this year will be Georgia/Auburn, frankly. I just have a feeling that game will be one for the ages. Late in the season, both teams fighting for SEC championship berth, so much hatred in the past 5-7 years.

Call me crazy, but I actually think the UF/UGA games are always good and they're usually pretty important. It's gotta be top 5. Could possibly be number 1 just depends on the year.

While I understand not listing it as the number 1 game this year, that doesn't mean I think it won't be the number 1 game of the year. Now, it's not the number 1 game every year, even if it is the biggest rivalry, but I wouldn't be the LEAST bit surprised if the Iron Bowl determined the West champ this year, and I'm almost expecting both teams to be ranked in the top 10. Add in the fact that the crystal trophy has resided in this state for the last three seasons and it might be the game of the century...though I actually expect the 2013 showdown to be bigger.

The last game between the two schools in 2010 came down to a missed field goal in overtime.

Obviously he must have missed the game in 2011.

You gotta give him one thing: it was a good one to miss...
