Planning on making first trip to Starkville

Planning on making my first trip to Starkville, and wanted to gather some intel we get closer to the season.  I'm likely heading over with a buddy who is an alum of MSU so I will have a tour guide for this adventure.  Nonetheless, wanted to get any info I could.

Do I need ear plugs for the cow bells?

I recommend just getting really drunk so you will be able to entertain yourself once the game is over.  There is nothing to do in that town otherwise.

Probably not a bad idea. I went back in 06 when virtually every MSU fan I talked to knew they were going to lose, and it was still no fun listening to those stinkin bells. I can't imagine what it will be like this year, now that State fans hate Auburn because Cam wouldn't even go there when they tried to pay him AND they think they stand a really good chance of winning.

I have been to Starkville once for a game, crossed the stadium off my list, and will NEVER go back to that dump of a city.  Now that I think about it, I don't know if I ever want to cross the line into that state again... yikes.

Second

There really isn't anything there. I remember going in '08, yeah the 3-2 game, when the game was on my bday. We had a good time but my buddies and I had to make a good time.

I would say bring ear plugs for the cowbells. They are VERY annoying.

I'm going this year too- my brother will be a freshman at State. I will be meeting up with/going with some Alumni as well.

I'm looking forward to it, every new stadium and college town has to be fun for a weekend. All you debbie downers out there who think Auburn is the best college town ever ;) If it weren't for skybar and supper club, it might resemble Starkvegas more than you think. So I'm told...

Not even close to the best bar in Auburn. Supper Club is hard to beat at about 3 or 4 in the morning.

That's the point. The Supper Club is the only one in Auburn that can stay open that far into Sunday morning, because it is a private club and thus not beholding to the same laws about serving alcohol on Sunday as the rest of the bars in town.

I'm just going with what the kids are all saying these days. I prefer the Bank Vault or 1716 myself

I would bring a Vuvuzela (horn from soccer matches) and blow it the entire game, the only thing more annoying than a cow bell.

That's one of the best suggestions I ever heard to counter the cow bells Nova.  The sound is most annoying.

I'm in grad school down here right now, and despite all the bashing I may receive, I will try to lend a hand.

If you are staying the whole weekend, I will recommend Friday night to head downtown to a little Greek bar and restaurant called Zorbas. Good beer, great food, and lots of TVs. Should be a good time and a good place to catch Fridays games.

Saturday, head to the stadium early, the campus is pretty small, so it might be nice to check it out if you never have. Its nothing too special, but SEC pride and all, might make you curious. Tailgating is no where near what it is on the Plains, but it is still pretty fun. Despite all the spew everyone types and hears on message boards from a bunch of kids in their mom's basements, State fans are generally hospitable and don't have too much hate towards Auburn fans. Everyone has a couple though, so like at any SEC school, pick your fights wisely. There are usually a lot of AU fans here, so you will be in no short supply of friendly War Eagles.

Directly after the game, take a 1/2 mile walk towards the Cotton District(can't get lost...ask someone or just follow the crowd) and have some great beers at the few bars that border the road. State of MS recently bumped up the legal alcohol % to 9.5%, so there are some good beers to have. If you want to go a 1/2 mile further, there is an awesome bar called the Halfway House, that is generally full of local and friendly people, which always has 20 - 30 very good beers to choose from.

Now, the most important. If you do decide to stay in town for Sunday, GO TO RESTAURANT TYLER FOR BRUNCH/LUNCH! It is an incredible meal. I usually get the blue plate which runs until 2:00. For about $10.00 you will get a gourmet plate that will contend with most meals on this planet. Personal favorite is the Fried Chicken with crawfish sauce, cheese grits, sweet potato fries, and pepper-jack Mac-n-cheese, with all the sweet potato corn bread you can eat.

Hope this helps, and can't wait to see my AU brethren down here! WDE!!

Quite honestly, I enjoyed my visit to Starkville. It reminded me of a smaller version of Auburn. I am still quite leery of the changed dynamic since the whole Cam deal, but truth be told, there really are a lot of good people there. It's far preferable to T-town, that's for danged sure.

After a few weeks, this was my impression as well. Smaller version, less tradition and pride, but at its heart, the two are very similar.

Yes the cowbells are very annoying and there is absolutely nothing to do in that town besides watch football. My brother spent two years there until he transferred to Auburn,so I took plenty trips there and lets just say it proved to my bro how much love i had for him. ;D The fans arent too bad besides the cowbells though,I guess they gotta have something to hang their hats on.  :wareagle:

I didn't have the same joyful trip that many of you seem to of had.  I went in 2010 and it seemed like every dang one of the MSU fans were wanting to fight my brother and I on the way out.  I wasn't impressed by anything I saw at the school or in the town and will never go back.

Athens is good if you want the bar scene but to compare Auburn to Starkvegas just shows how little you know.  I went to MSU once and that was enough.

Definitely earplugs and be prepared for the "Stark" aspect of Starkville.  It is one of hte most appropriately named towns I have been to.

I know plenty, but thanks for the snark just the same.

The only SEC cities/towns I haven't been to are Tuscaloosa and Fayetteville (prior to this year's expansion).  Saying Starkville is on par with Auburn is just plain ignorant, and I call it as I see it.

Aside from the bashing and saying this is better than that(we all know Auburn is better, goes without saying)...was the point not an AU brother asking for advice or pointers on what to do, where to go, etc.? Glad so many of you that do not actually live here have so many "good" things to say. Some of you commenting may not have ever even been, but based on regional and local opinions, you would give your two cents. If you aren't gonna help the guy out, at least let him decide for himself whether his trip sucked or not.
