In all honesty, they can go nowhere but up, they have a much more (in my opinion of course) advantageous location with much more for college kids to do than in Auburn or Bama, so you have to think they are likely to be a viable threat in the next few years.  In in-state recruiting at least.

Now USA needs EADS/Airbus to purchase naming rights to Ladd so they can make some improvements.

I don't know if it was planned for this purpose, but USA's first game this year is against Texas-San Antonio--which started their football program the same day & year as South. That'll be a neat measuring stick.
