FWIW based on info from Scout - Scout has us giving offers to Tyrone Crowder, Denver Kirkland, and Caleb Benenoch only.  It also says that CB has high interest in 6 teams, but only 3 of those have offered - AU, Baylor, and Texas A&M.  DT has high interest in us and uga, but we haven't offered.  We have not offered Bell either, but he has some offers from smaller schools.

I think there is a very good chance that Wilson Bell ends up in Orange and Blue as a last minute signing day surprise.  I think he would be a very nice developmental OG....pair him with a rivals 250 type OG, and you're looking at a solid line class.

How many guards are we looking for this class?

With Sullen graduating and a big question mark behind Mack's name, I would think 2.  I wouldn't think we;d go after any others.

I've been hearing Crowder's name mentioned for a long, long time as a likely addition, but it's only hearsay, so I hesitate to say we'll get him...

But to answer the question, we'll take two interior linemen, but we might take a center prospect to go with the guard. Would set us up nicely for when Reese moves on, because he'll have time to redshirt and, if Dismukes doesn't go pro early, we'll have a third year sophomore starting after that. Three years eligibility left, but two years of weight training and learning technique to go with it.

That's the most likely scenario, but there just isn't a lot of high-level, undeveloped talent this year.  If we don't get anywhere with the guys listed, we might just take one.  I still do not believe Rodgers is out of the picture, because he needs to be an EE to get into USCw.

If Rodgers or Crowder didn't sign with Auburn then we might offer a scholarship to Wilson Bell or David Gross. Just wait until NSD, who knows.  :we:

^Agree with your assessment red^

I think this weekend will be a turning point for Crowder. Hopefully he will see the light and come join forces with the good guys. Also, think Bell is on the radar for secondary pick, not a bad secondary pick I might add.

Tyrone Crowder is a BEAST! I have family in Rockingham NC and they say he has a mean streak/ chip on his sholder. Hearing he really like Wake Forrest but you never know. I think he is the best fit out of all other OG's out there. IMO

Is there a chance that any of the guys from this years freshman class make a move to guard?  I know they were all recruited to play tackle exept for AK.

I think Shane Calahan would fall in that category, but I see Diamond, Yound, and Miller all as tackles.

depending on how recruiting goes, we may not have a choice.  i said in another thread, i would prefer a very talented tackle playing at guard rather than a less talented guard ... even if it means playing out of position.  i also bet that one of those tackles would prefer to play at guard rather than be a back up at tackle, even if it isnt 100% ideal.

CJG has made it clear he is not doing that anymore.

i know that is what he has said/indicated, but he has also stated he will put the best 5 on the field.  he will do what he has to do to get the best OL unit on the field.  may be the 5 best OL.  or could be the best 3/4 OL with an additional 1/2 OL that create the best overall unit.

slade for example - in spring, i believe slade was probably the second best tackle (to robinson) and potentially ALSO the second best guard (at that time - i believe westerman/sullen combo will become the 2 best guards when healthy).  miller may have been the 3rd best tackle during the spring.  in order to get the best 5 on the field (in the spring) he experimented by putting the second best, healthy guard - slade- on the field and the 3rd best (in the spring) tackle on the field.  now i think all that changes when all the healthy bodies are back in the fall.  my point is ... i agree that OT should be OT and OG should be OG ... but at the end of the day the 5 best will play, even if unfortunately out of their ideal position.

Don't forget that we have Kozan, Leff, and Adams to work with also.

Players develop differently and once the entire freshman class is on campus and spends some time in the program some of them may project as guards and no longer be tackle candidates.  To assume that what they are recruited as is where they end up playing is short-sited.  I hope that they continue to recruit the most talented players and let the cards fall into place.  Clearly we recruited more high school tackles than we can play last year.  I am guessing they have a plan in place and see players developing into other positions or being capable of playing all along the offensive line.  I for one would be very surprised if in 3 years Miller, Callahan, Young, Diamond, Leff and Adams are all listed at tackle.  I am guessing Callahan and Adams will be guards by then.  Which would give us 3 guards in that class with Kozan

Problem is that interior linemen are generally shorter than Leff and Callahan are. Callahan will probably end up at guard, but I don't know about Leff.

As for what we take this year, I can't see us not taking at least one interior lineman, but pops is right that there simply aren't that many prospects for the interior this year, so I could see us taking one and then making up for it with next year's class. I do agree, though, that Rodgers is far from out of the picture; I think he knows that if he can't be an EE, then he still will have an offer from us because of the lack of quality prospects.

I agree with the fact that OG's are usually shorter, but the thing is players are getting bigger.  I started looking at NFL O-lines and their heights are 6'4-6'7 at guard.  The top guards in the 2012 draft were 6'4" to 6'"6.  2013 top prospects for the NFL have a couple 6'3" guys but it again shoots up to 6'6".  I also wonder what their actual height is as I was looking on rivals for the height.  Some of these guys might be closer to 6'5" when they are measured with no shoes and aren't rounding anything over the inch mark up.

Tis a fair point, and 6'5 is tall for a guard, but not too tall, IMO, just borderline. :dunno:

Fortunately, we've got one of the best in the business in Coach Grimes to sort all of that out, and I can just sit on a message board and talk about it.

yea, i bet a few of our 6'5" to 6'7" high school tackles will magically shrink when they get to campus ...

You're probably absolutely right about that.

I would agree since all of our lineman seem to magically shrink when they get measured for the NFL.
