"Special"

So, maybe I'm a Debbie Downer....but I'm already tired of reading the threads about how this is going to be a "special season". Personally, this team has a LOT to prove before they can resemble this. We will need to come a long way from some of last year's performances in order for this to be a special season.  We have a lot of new faces. I think too many fans are expecting this team to be special because CGC made great hires at coordinators and we've recruited so well the last few. IMO, it takes a lot more than this to warrant a "special" prediction.

My question is, what would make this team "special"? Is there a number of wins required in order to reach the special category? My threshold will be 8 wins and beating Uga and Bama. This would be a special team to me because it will be the first year in a new direction. With this, I would love to see no team score more than 30 pts against us and I would love to see an O that doesn't turn the ball over.

All of our optimism is based on last year, new coaches (BVG in particular), experience, finally some depth, and coaches comments (as well as some well connected parents), with a sprinkle of A-Day polish changes from last year.

Of course the fans of any major team will be enthusiastic about their teams pre-season, but our optimism is based upon visible and verbal evidence, not just wishful thinking.

An eight game winning season this year, in my mind, is not improvement. We won 8 last year with the least experienced and youngest starters in the SEC.  9 or more wins, with close losses, would be good improvement. 10 or more wins, excellent. Winning or tying for the SEC West crown or better, would be phenomenal!

Well, Debbie, here you go.

This team is special because they wear the orange and blue of AUBURN UNIVERSITY.

This team is special because these young men chose to wear those colors.

This team is special because they will leave everything they have on the field each and every game.

This team is special because they will not quit!

This team is special because we have the BEST COACHING STAFF in the country.

I'm not sure how many wins we get.

I'm not sure who those wins might be against.

I do expect us to be more competitive against our strongest opponents.

We are building for some very special years in the near future.

The players seem to think it is gonna be special too. Tre Mason tweeted LeBron James and D.Wade earlier saying something like they need to get Miami ready for the 2012 Auburn Tigers.

I like the mindset myself.

Sounds like they have been working hard this offseason. We are bringing pretty much everybody back. We have that much more experience. Much more favorable schedule.

We will win at least 2 more games than last year IMO. We should have a legit chance to win every game. When is the last time we have walked into a home game and been counted out before the coin flip? Anything is possible. We get through September undefeated then look out cause We Comin' with a full head of confidence and steam.

We have a lot to be excited about as fans. Very exciting times.

This team is developing a sense of leadership and fire....two things we were missing last season. Couple that with new coordinators and the fact that our players are growing up. Our biggest asset will be a nasty and deep defensive line.

I don't question Pat Dye!!!

I ask you, What does Pat Dye think about this Auburn team?

Personally, I can't get enough of the "I think this going to be a special season" threads. I wish we would have one on here everyday. It's called optimism and high expectations without delusion. High expectations with unwavering belief in what Auburn is capable of is what excites me about this team. Especially with what I am hearing along with the rest of you from Kiehl's dad and the rest of the team. Keep the optimistic threads coming!  :wareagle:

Frankly, if you think that we'll only win 8 games with wins over uat and ugay...then who else do you think we will lose to!  :banghead:

I think we are going to win them all!

Winning the SECC would make it a special season in my book. Winning 10-11 games and a BCS bowl wouldn't be bad either. Winning the NC and you couldn't slap the smile off my face!!!

I'm with you Weegs ( :o what is wrong with me? been agreeing with Weegs too much lately :o ) I'm sick of the wait till next year, wait till next year, wait till next year thinking. With all the info from the players and those close to the program, AUQBDAD and others, it’s hard not to be excited and optimistic.

Anything less than 10 wins regular season is going to be a disappointment for me. 10 wins is a good year, conference championship or better is special. Personally I think these boys can do it, they can win it all.

Your mind is your own worst enemy; it’s what you believe that limits your ability.

I have my own reservations about people getting this excited before the season. Memories of 2003 swim in my head. I like for the players to be confident in themselves, but they definitely do not need to get overconfident (not saying they are, just sayin'), and the fan base probably should temper its expectations at least a little, because you never know.

However, to answer the question, what makes this year special is not so much this year, but rather the foundation we are setting for the future: I truly believe that this is the beginning of a long run of success.

The problem is you have faulty logic to begin with.

You are basing everything on the ASSUMPTION that it takes years for talent to adjust to the Division 1 level.

It does not. It only takes 2-3 years to develop a prospect when he has 3 star talent or 3 star coaching. Did it take Carnell, Marcus McNeil, Dansby, Takeo, etc more than 2 years to develop and make an impact? Heck, even D. Bates made an impact as a frosh. The guys we have signed in the past few years are VERY TALENTED!

With the changes we had on the defensive side of the ball, we have 5 star coaching talent across the board (the ONLY spot that has a question mark is Coach Lefty- no disrespect to him, but he is still unknown).

We have been reeling in top 5-10 recruiting classes for 3 years. It will show on the field this year.

Never temper your expectations! It is this kind of thinking that has plagued the Auburn fanbase for many, many years. Do you know what kind of people temper their expectations? The ones who never raise championship trophies. Someone on this board asked Cam if he thought we would have a good season in 2010, what did Cam say?

"We are going to win them all!"

That is championship thinking. That is what we as fans should think and expect. Slam me if you must, but it will never change the way I think. War Eagle.

I'll drink to this Red. I beleive that we are steering the ship in the right direction both on O and D with these two hires. But I also believe that it realistically takes a little longer to change course with a ship than  a Mustang. I agree about tempering expectations just a tad.

True, but you can't be special without it. I think we can suprise a lot of folks and there are reasons for that besides emotion.

A much improved defense as it couldn't get much worse from the coaching we had there

Talent

Upperclassmen

Power run game from a pro style set.

9 wins and a bowl will be good with me.

I think we are almost there but not quite.

o.k.--some valid points BUT wouldn't you agree that we are still inexperienced as far as playing time? Have you seen our new power run game from a pro style set against any opposition?

I get what you're saying but my point is that I wish we would be more "cautiously optimistic" as a fan base and stop acting like we should be contenders next season. It is too early to believe that we should contend for the west next season, imo. To me, it's not anti-Auburn to be realistic. Then, if we contend--Great!

Yeah, not sure of that 8 win logic there either.  Btw, Vegas has our o/u at 7.5 games...I like those odds.  I think it's time to make a trip out West.  Anyone want to wire me some money for their bets?
