Saban's Recruiting Mistakes

I realize that Alabama currently has the Rivals #8 spot, so obviously he hasn't totally hurt his rep with the HS players and their families, I just wonder how much the Philon and Justin Taylor episodes from last recruiting season has affected the 2013 class.  Common sense to me, and I am CERTAINLY no expert, but if I wanted to drive home the difference between Auburn and Alabama to a recruit and his family, I would hold up Philon/Taylor to Shon Coleman.

Not much yet. They have 8 or 9 spots left and all will be 4 stars or better.

We are starting to hear about recruits being turned off by the "business" nature of their program, i.e. having to make an appointment to talk to the almighty one.  Their commits are being told to stop all visits and shut down the recruiting, but they can, and have pulled offers very close to NSD.  To me, these things would weigh heavily on my decision where to commit and sign.  I just wonder if this way of thinking is STARTING to spread throughout the recruits.

Philon & Taylor weren't the first guys that this happened to - they won't be the last.  And it doesn't appear it has diminished his recruiting one bit.

AU is recruiting head to head with more teams than just uat.  If our coaches concentrate too much on uat/saban then what happens when UGA/LSU/FLA come in the backdoor and take our guys?

I have become irritated with the focus and attention uat/saban get from many AU posters.

IMO, UGA should be our top priority right now.  We need to take their talented recruits and we need to whip their azz immediately.  We have a crappy record against them over the past few years, and our coaches need to turn this thing around quick.

I'm not saying that we concentrate on Saban, just that when we are going head-to-head over a recruit, the contrast in recruiting philosophy should be part of the discussion.

I have heard several of our recruits mention the "4 year scholarship" as a reason for choosing AU.  It is obvious that we are stressing the differences in the two programs.

Yeah, I forgot about that one.  Maybe we are starting to see giant fissures in Saban's "process" now.  Small cracks here and there, but Foster might just have been the one to say the emperor has no clothes.

I understand what you are getting at here but I think it matters per-player not overall. I think that some players don't care how Saban treat's other players because they are special that will not happen to them. Or they want the so-called fast track to the NFL that no other school can deliver, which is BS as well. Or perhaps there are out-side pressures or family that persuade a player to go to bama. It is was it is, I would not worry about it to much.

Then AU coaches need to ride that horse til it dies if that's what it takes to snatch 5*'s from our conference foe.

In the meantime what can be done about Les Miles pulling in the talent he gets?  How about Jimbo Fisher, Will Muschamp, Mark Richt, Mack Brown, Urban Meyer, Steve Spurrier?

When navigating through the shark infested waters of recruiting, saban ain't the only shark that AU must navigate through.  Thank goodness our coaching staff sees that and understands it better than us fans. :-[

I think you sell Auburn first, then you point out the differences between what you offer over the other guy.  I didn't start this thread to discuss the recruiting habits and the strategy against Muschamp, Richt, Brown, etc.  I specifically pointed out Saban and what I see as mistakes in his recruiting.  When we are going head-to-head for a recruit such as Foster, I think it would be wise to point out some distinct differences.  When Saban is giving you headline grabbing differences, you should use them.  I just wonder how much they have started to affect the decisions of some recruits.  I'm pretty sure Richt is using the Taylor back-stab in his recruiting efforts against Alabama.

Unfortunately, his mistakes do not seem to be hurting them all that bad.  As much as we hate to admit it, the man wins championships and puts players into the NFL.  This is what the kids focus on.  Is weeman the only coach putting kids in the NFL????  No, but he does have a pretty good track record over the past few years.

Sadly, I am beginning the feel that the "love of the game" is gone from our youth today.  It's all about "where can I play immediately", "who gives me the best chance to get rich", and in some cases "who gives me the most "perks" while I'm in school".  You can interpret "perks" however you want.  Examples that stick out in my mind are Dodge Chargers, apartments, jobs for relatives, scholarships for girlfriends, free suits, free fishing trips, free laptops, etc., but that's just me.  Not to mention the REC.  If you play for bammer, and things don't work out for you on the field, you are basically taken care of for life by the REC, in return that you do not discuss what you know about the program, and the perks listed above.  For many kids, this is too much to ignore.

Saban will always get top recruits.  The media will always worship him.  I wonder how different things would be if Saban and UA were in the place of Penn St. right now.  If Saban covered up a child molester during the last several years, but still won the 2 championships.  Would the bammers take his statue down?  Would he be forced out at UA?  Would the fanbase still worship him with undying support?  I hate to say it, but I think many of them would justify it somehow, as long as bammer continued to win.

I think that a recruit that commits to Saban would be foolish to shut the door on their recruiting after what happened with the offers he withdrew late in the process.  And if Saban is pressuring ANY of his commits to stop their recruiting process after what he did, the media should be dragging him through the ringer on a daily basis.  Actually if the NCAA was serious about ethics, they would get involved with that and require Saban to get a signed statement from every player he recruits that they understand that Saban may not honor their offer/commitment even if he promises he will, even though most all other coaches do and will honor them.

Fine - use the headline grabbing differences against saban when going head to head for the same recruit.  I've got feeling saban will just wave his 3 BCSNC rings in their face and not have to say a word in his own defense.

He does not give a crap how he treats kids, and the entire nation knows this.  It's been broadcast all over the place for years.  I haven't seen evidence that it has affected his ability to bring in top shelf talent consistantly. :dunno:

An early signing period would take care of that.  Get it ALL down on paper early and stop the dang media circus with these teenage kids.

Flashing those rings didn't get him the #2 HS player in the country.  I think we are starting to see the end of Alabama recruiting dominance.

I didn't want to start another thread for this but apparently Andy Dodd, Rivals #21 OG 3*, has flipped from uat to LSU.

I heard some rumors early today but where did you see that he actually flipped? Wouldn't hurt my feelings if he did.
