Rarely do I post a lengthy article even though it may be free.  The author, Bryan Matthews, and the publisher, 247sports.com, have done a public courtesy by posting the article for non-subscribers with the hopes of driving traffic to their site to obtain new subscribers.  I try and reciprocate the courtesy by not posting the full article, but rather only the link, that they may benefit and consequently continue to be employed so that we may be further graced with their insight into AU's program.   ;)

Can I comment on the article here? I think the article raises some valid and horrible suggestions, and I want to have a discussion about it

I say go for it.

I ask because this seems like less of an Auburn football questions and more of a general football topic question or maybe recruiting, and if it gets moved then I'll be less likely to follow it  :-[

There is a lot of merit here.

The schools would not lose out on a player/ position they didn't recruit by having a same position player flipped.

The players could focus on enjoying  there Sr. year and getting acclimated to their new school.

Also, like the fact recruits will not be able to play system for rock star status as long.

It protects recruits  too from tricks such as Nicky's signing day processing  for those "more worthy."

Also, like the protection of the decommit option if HC is released.

So, debate away.

I guess I have more of a free agent philosopy and would prefer changes that make it easier for the students to handle the recruiting process.  IMO, signing kids before their senior HS season is frought wtih risks on both sides.....kids get hurt, schools make major changes in staff, kids have a great senior season and what looked like a great opportunity to sign with a mid-level school now doesn't look so good since some top 10 teams are now calling, etc.

JMO, but reducing the contact frequency, tighter rules about who represents the kid and reducing the number of visits a school can host would all be helpful.    I also see and worry about cases where agressive coaches (and boosters) nag kids into submission and then pressure them even more when they start having buyer's remorse..  With an early signing period, this problem would become worse than it is now.

Overall, the current system is not  "athlete friendly" and though some kids seem to  have a knack for milking the publicity, most do not.  The schools need less freedom to drop kids, 'run out of scholarships' etc.  and kids need more freedom to change their minds.

Kick the "guardians" to the curb.  It's gotten to the point now where HS coaches are no longer the "go-to" guy for many top level athletes.  And when the HS coach is the 'legal guardian' of a 5* player - something smells fishy all the way around.

I'm NOT for imposing more restrictions and rules.  As it stands today, Coach Chizik has his hands tied enough - he is barely allowed enough contact with recruits to even get to personally know them or their parents.  He's limited on the time he can personally evaluate HS players now - I don't want him hampered any further by new rules.

He HAS to have ample time to evaluate not only the performance of a player, but also a players character.  Our coaches need much more contact and time with these kids.  They have to be more careful now than ever with the new limitations on signing only 25/yr because if you screw up and sign a kid with tons of talent but poor judgement, your team is in trouble.
