The REAL problems (not sunshine pumping!)

After watching that game, I noticed a few things:

1. Our defense still doesn't look amazing, but has definately made some strides. The biggest problem is getting them to work together. When the d-line played well, the secondary messed up. When the secondary did will, the linebackers messed up. We need to work consistency.

2. Our offense has three core problems that are really holding us back. (see below)

3. If we would illiminate the items in 2 and continue to improve in 1, we would/should/could be a drastically different team.

So what are these three things that are hurting the offense?

1. Various mental errors: These include fumbles, penalties, and holding the ball too long. We appeared to move the ball moderately well at times, but every single drive contained one of these. A fumble, penalty, or sack put us in 3rd and long situations much too often.

2. O-line play: Our o-line is young, but it is time to man up. This is a very talented set of offensive linemen. The "they are young" excuse will no longer cut it. They need to improve now or we need to find ways to help them (i.e. keep prosch on the field more often, use more tight ends, etc.).

3. QB confidence: Frazier made a few bad decisions today, but his first half numbers throwing the ball were not half bad. I think he even threw the ball to several different receivers. I think he is starting to learn how to read defenses and he is starting to get more confident with the football. Now we have to get him to the next step... Learning what to do when the play breaks down.I'll also use this point to say that I disagreed completely with pulling him. Nothing against Clint, but Frazier is the future of the program and we need to keep working on development with him.

In my opinion, reducing mental errors, improving o-line play, and continuing to develop Frazier are the only things holding us from being a good team. I also think that improved offensive play will make the defense more consistent.

Hold on guys. Have faith that the coaches will get these problems addressed. When they do, we will be a good team again.

Thoughts?

I agree with what you posted except that I do not have faith in the coaching staff (other than BVG and Boulware) to get these problems addressed.

Totally agree with your comment about Kiehl. It really looked like he was about to come into his own. So naturally, the coaches pull him. It kinda sums up our offense. We keep doing something until it works and then we don't do it anymore.

I concur..even if the coaches are great recruiters.. if you can't coach em or keep em on the team what good is being a great recruiter. And whatever happened to Coach Ray Goff?

We need a QB plain an simple! Both continue to miss open recievers and

cost us scores. In todays offense you must have a good QB or you will never

have a good offense. If we have to sign 4 or 5 to find one we need to do this.

All good teams have a good QB and we have to find one.

Funny thing is that back in 2009, AU message board posters everywhere were calling for Boulware to be fired due to issues with special teams. Now they mostly love him. Is there maybe a lesson there?

I'm glad we played Moseley in the 2nd half. Now maybe we can stick with Frazier and help him develop. Hr just as to make quicker decisions and learn to get rid of the ball quicker until our O line improves. This was painful to watch and to me it didn't seem that playing Moseley instead of Frazier will get us anywhere this season.

I agree with what you have said. Did you see the different receivers that caught passes in second half, why have they not been playing. Seems like we only want to throw to Blake if he is open or not or it just me.

Yes, Boulware improved from 2009 until now. Chizik has not and in fact has led a huge regression from 2010 until present. Every assistant coach needs at least two years to prove whether they can do it or not. Head coaches deserve 4 or 5. Chizik will get his 5th year next year.

We put up 0 points in the first half against one of the worst defenses in the country. How is there anything positive in that?

Because we did what has been hurting Arkansas early in this season. We moved the ball okay, but always found a way to shoot ourselves in the foot in each possession (whether it was a penalty, turnover, or sack).

Meh... I have to disagree.

For starters, you can't really blame Chizik. Head coaches don't do that much at the college level. They make hires, recruit players, and make major game decisions. He has done a great job with the last two. I think he did a good job making hires as well. We needed a OC that coaches quarterbacks well. He went after a guy that has traditionally done that very well. We are starting to see it with Frazier. He has made small strides forward in every game.

If you want to judge our coordinators, I say it is too early. None of our qb's have ever taken a snap under center prior to this year which is slowing their progression, I'm sure. Also, you have to remember how young our o-line is. Jeff Grimes turned guys that weren't very athletic into all americans, but it took about a year or so to do so. Luper has done a good job with our running backs. Taylor has been pretty good with our receivers. Darvin Adams was not very impressive in high school and trooper turned him into a star.

Defensively, I think all of the coaches have made improvement. D-line is finally starting to come together. The linebackers are typically making solid tackles. (however they looked bad today.)Secondary is being coached by a great coach, but he has only been here for a few months. Our previous secondary coaches were not successful. It is going to take some time for martinez to undo the habits that were formed under the other coaches.

The only coach that I really think is slightly questionable right now is Lefty, but he hasn't been given enough time to estabilish his system.

Meh, the results (other than 2010 with Cam Newton, Nick Fairley, Tracy Rocker and Gus Malzahn) on the field and off of the field under Chizik have been meh turning to vomit.
