Head coach Gene Chizik's "spin"

I've noticed several posts following the game that either accused Gene Chizik of engaging in "spin" on today's loss or that predicted he would. Do these statements from the head coach (via Al.com AU beat writer Joel Erickson's Twitter feed) look like spin? They don't look like spin to me. They look like reality:

Gene Chizik: "You saw the game. We had two weeks to prepare. ... And I certainly didn't expect to play like we did today."

Chizik: "Offensively, one of the most poor performances I've seen in a long time, just point-blank."

Chizik: "The Auburn fans and the Auburn family, they did not deserve this, and I apologize to anybody who came to watch it."

Chizik: "When you have five turnovers and you have eight sacks, the offense has regressed. That's self-explanatory."

Chizik: "We understand where we're at. We've won one game, so there's an urgency in everything we do."

Chizik: "When we needed the stop at the beginning of the third quarter, we didn't get the stop."

Chizik: "We had our chances. We missed big opportunities. We've got receivers running open, we throw the ball over their head."

Chizik: "It's a completely unacceptable performance offensively. I don't think there's anything else we can say."

Chizik: "I didn't see the fans leave, but I don't blame them."

That's not spin.

Bout time he start veering from his cookie cutter answers. I just don't see any fire in this team. I think CGC might actually be too nice... It's great to promote this AU Family and "All In" stuff but at some point you gotta start slapping ppl around and taking command of the program. He looks just as lost as the whole team.... It's time for a change

Definitely not spin... I am not going to pile on & kick him while he is down but we will see what kind of coach he is for the remainder of the season. We all know there is talent. It is up to him ultimately to get something out of them.

That is encouraging to see to me. I know things are bad but I still think better days are ahead. I still think Chiz is the right man too. This is going to be a pretty bad year. I just hope to see some progress. The defense is getting better in my opinion. The O needs to come on along now.

2 quotes that stick out to me,

especially the first one

Thanks. Yours is the first reply that seems relevant to what I posted and to what Chizik had to say.

Jesus Christ people, there is no more "wait and see." He was 5-19 for a reason, and that reason is he is a sorry head coach. Great coordinator. He should have stayed a coordinator. This is a disaster of biblical proportions. Expect a Tennessee-like drop off where we will be irrelevant for the 5+ years. Just you wait and see.

Was he a great coordinator? Or was Tubervile a huge part of his success? Just thinking

I'm notready to fire CGC, not by a long shot, but he needs to address what is an absolutley horrible offense, and what is shaping out to be a huge bust as a hire for OC.

Nethier QB is ready, although Mosley looked to throw with more confidence

8 sacks - pathetic - the O line needs to be ashamed.

160+ yards in penalties and sack yardage - we're not good on O to begin with, we defintely can't overcome that.

I thought that after the first 2 series the D played well enough to win - to keep Arkansas under 10 points going into the 4th quarter should have been enough - especially with the crap the offense left on the field for them to clean up.

He made a bad hire at OC - let's see what h does to address it.

Did you see Texas Tech's defense the last two years? Did you see their record last year? Did you see Texas win the national championship with Chiz as DC? Did you see AU win the national championship with Chiz as head coach?

Same old cookie cutter answers

Really? Those responses were cookie cutter? What would you have him say? (I suspect that there's nothing he could say that you wouldn't label "cookie cutter" today.)

Did you see that we have had one of the worst defensive stretches in Auburn football history with him as head coach? It's time to move on and make a change

It was kind of cookie cutter for a coach who just took a grand mal ass whipping. You had the apology, you had the statement of being unacceptable, you had the sense of "urgency", you had the not blaming fans for being mad, admission of regression, needing to get back at it etc.

That being said, I'm not sure what exactly I expected him to say. Not sure there really is much more he can say other than he is shuffling the responsibilities of the coaching staff and that scot loeffler will no longer be responsible for the offense.

Uh what??? How did you get that outta what I said? This is Tubbs 3rd season and they started it undefeated.... This is Chizik's 4th and we have started 1-4.... Under Tubbs our defense was consistently dominant no matter who the coordinator was. Under Chizik it has been dreadful

TigerPaw1 speaks words of truth.

You might not like them, you might have good reasons that they are so.

But they are true, and somebody (are you listening Jay and I don't mean J.) should decide if this is acceptable.
